Thank you for reading the ENTIRE profile. It is important to have the best experience for both parties. We decline to potential volunteers not to read it.
IMPORTANT:
-The calendar is up to date. Please do not submit a request for months that appear unavailable.
-The volunteering would be 2 weeks minimum and 3 maximum.
-Only ONE person, WOMAN and older than 25 are accommodated.
-Preferably Spanish speakers.
Hello girls! My name is Ana and I am part of an animal association located in La Llagosta, (Barcelona). This association has a cat shelter (it only takes care of cats), and depending on the time of year, we need volunteers to help at the shelter.
In exchange for helping at the shelter, you can stay at my house.
Food is not included in the agreement. All volunteers must provide their own food. It is possible to cook at home. In addition, surely the moments in which we meet at home we will be able to cook together and have good times sharing.
So... do you dare to be a HELPER IN A CAT SHELTER? The TASKS consist of:
-MISSION 1 (and most important): Socializing feral cats and checking up on them. This includes spending time with the cats, playing and gaining their trust so they become friendlier and acceptable for adoptions. Also, check up on all the cats' health every day. There are many cats and only a few volunteers. Sometimes a cat is sick but we don't realize it fast enough to be in time to save its life.
-MISSION 2: Cleaning the areas where cats live (sandboxes, beds, feeders, etc.). This is a secondary thing in your volunteering and you'll be asked to do it only if there is nobody else who can do it on a particular day.
HOURS are from 10:30 a.m. to 13:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. Days off are Sunday and Monday. Most of the times you won't have to stay until 13:00 and you can leave when the other volunteers leave. You won't be in the shelter on your own.
Candidates who have good skills with animals or who have had previous experiences with cats will be more positively valued as in this volunteering you should be able to connect with cats and spend the mornings with them.
Although you will live with me (Ana), the volunteering will take place at the animal shelter and you may be with different people each time you go. All the people at the shelter will take care of you and treat you very well.
We are looking for a volunteer who is already familiar with living with pets, not a "fast learner". Sometimes this is not a pleasant job because you have to clean or lift weights, and some of the animals are feral and won't let you touch them.
You have to go to the shelter even if it is hot, cold or rainy.
Sometimes an animal gets sick and has to be taken to the vet or given medication. All of these things are not pretty, but that is what caring for animals and therefore, this volunteering entails.
If you think you are willing to do this type of work and thereby help improve the lives of many cats that people abandon on the street, welcome!!!!!
I assure you that there are also many beautiful and rewarding moments.
THE FAMILY:
I am Ana and I am 43 years old. I work as a teacher in a primary school and I also do some private English classes. I volunteer at the cat shelter and try to dedicate a good part of my free time to helping. I also love meeting people from all over the world, that's why I host the shelter volunteers in my house.
If you want to have a social life in Barcelona and see places, I can take you to places or organize outings where you will surely meet other travelers who are in Barcelona. Everything will depend a little on how much free time I have right when you are going to be here, but I think my previous volunteers were not disappointed.
Emilio is my husband. It's hard to connect with him because he's shy, but if you're a sociable and respectful person at home, you might get along very well.
The inhabitants of the house that we love the most are our beautiful cats Hodor, Mani and Rein. We sometimes host baby kittens from the shelter waiting to be adopted. It is very rewarding to see them grow and play everywhere.
In case you have a fur allergy, remember that these animals live at home.
HOME
We live in a small flat (apartment) in La Llagosta, a town right next to Barcelona. The city can be easily reached by train in 20 minutes. Our town is safe and the people are friendly, especially if you present yourself as a traveler, they will want to know everything about you. Don't think we live in an unsafe suburb.
Staying in our house is convenient if what you hope is to get to know Barcelona but living in a quieter place with local people. If you need to work online, you will have a lot of free time and the house is quiet.
Entonces...

We are a Catalan couple, born in Barcelona, although our families were emigrants originally from other parts of Spain. We have grown up in cultural environments marked by this culture shock and we can explain to you many traditions that we have learned here, or that we learned from the places where our families are from. We know Catalan and Spanish history and a good part of the customs. We are good at recommending places to visit that might be of interest to you. If you are a big fan of history, we can give you a historical tour in Barcelona. We can make you try typical food. Some volunteers told me that I should warn the girls that my house is not the best place to follow a diet because here you will surely gain weight. TRANSPORTATION How to get from the airport to our house? At Terminal 2, look for the train station (follow the orange sign with a capital R). Take the only train there is and you will arrive at my house in 45 minutes. Stop in La Llagosta. The best way to travel to Barcelona from the house is by train. Plus, right now it's free to travel by train. Trains run from 5:00 AM to 00:00. If you want to come back later, there are buses, although they are not free.
Ajuda
THE SHELTER Helping at the shelter is very rewarding although sometimes it is hard. The schedule is not very strict but we do ask that the times we have agreed upon be met. At the shelter you will never be alone, there will always be another volunteer who is helping, although it will not be a traveler, it will be a person from the town. The shelter is a very "handmade" place by the volunteers who have been building it, so you will see that it is not sophisticated. Keep in mind that in the hot months there may be mosquitoes and they are annoying. The perfect volunteer would be a person who: -Takes her volunteering seriously and is punctual and hardworking. -He likes cats and animals in general. -You have read the entire profile (mention your favorite pizza in your application, so I will know if you read it). -Contributes to taking care of the house, that is, cleans if it gets dirty or helps if you see that something needs to be done. -She is a little crazy and has a sense of humor. -She doesn't plan to spend all her free time locked in her room.
Idiomas

I can teach Spanish :) If you are travelling to learn Spanish, we can arrange a language exchange. I can teach you English if your level is B2 or lower and need it to travel in Europe.Acomodação
You will have your own room, although sometimes I need to go in because there are things in the closet that I need. We only have one bathroom so this will be shared. You will have access to wifi. Inside the room there is a large table in case you need to study or work. We can give you sheets, blankets, pillows and towels. The washing machine is shared with us. We live on the seventh floor and there are two elevators. REMEMBER: -We give you lodging but not always food. -You can cook your own food although at first I am a little distrustful of new people who use my kitchen. It's nothing personal, it's just that some previous volunteers ruined things for me. -At home you cannot open windows that do not have a net because it is dangerous for my
Tendrás acceso a wifi.
Podemos darte sábanas, mantas, almohada y toalla.
