There are several options, as we have several volunteer houses.
Where you will be depends on availability when you arrive and how long you are staying and if you are completing a certification program:
*basement apartment with either shared or private room
*house with shared bedroom
*house with private room
*glamping tent
Sometimes you stay with a local family, sometimes with other volunteers, sometimes with our program partners. We try to not have anyone in their house by themselves. Sometimes you will have to move to another house during your stay.
MEALS/FOOD:
Plan to buy and cook your own food. If you cook well and sensibly, you should be able to eat well on 3 usd a day. We get many volunteers and usually have some food supplies others have left behind and we also get food donations.
Community meals are often arranged by volunteers. This depends on the group and if anyone organizes this. This is usually a meal rotation system with everyone contributing ingredients or funds for food, or if someone comes up with a meal based on what is in the house. Sometimes another volunteer simply cooks for others. You are always welcome to start up community meals if you want those to happen.
If you don't have funds for food, and cannot figure out what to cook with existing ingredients, you may also dine at the local community kitchen for meals.
If you help at the local meal distribution, you can get free food each Friday, usually a premade meal and some food to cook with,
There are also places nearby to get free food and free meals if you don't have funds for food.
CLEANING ROTATIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
PLEASE EXPECT TO HELP KEEP THE VOLUNTEER HOUSES CLEAN AND TIDY FOR EVERYONE. WE GET MANY PEOPLE COMING AND GOING AND LARGE GROUPS OF VOLUNTEERS SOMETIMES, SO IT'S IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE HOUSES CLEAN AT ALL TIMES AND FOLLOW THE CLEANING ROTATION. IF THE LAST GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS LEFT A MESS YOU MAY HAVE TO CLEAN IT UP.Algo mais...
ARRIVING TO OUR PLACE:
*Fly into Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), take a bus to downtown, then another bus to the house for about $3 USD.
You can also Uber directly to our place for about $30-40 USD.
We cannot pick you up from the airport, or take you to the airport when you leave.
NOTE: It's best to arrive during the daytime hours, from Monday to Friday if you want to take the buses, as bus service is either nonexistent or slow at night and on the weekend. We recommend you download the UBER or LYFT apps on your phone if you plan to arrive that way.
HOURS: about 15 hours a week, flexible schedule or set schedule, depending on what you are doing. If you are developing a project, you can work at your own pace with regular check ins.
Depending on the time of year, there is usually an interesting mix of people in our houses a mix of internationals from all over the world. We usually also have native speakers in the house to assist non native speakers with English.
