    KARIBU FRIENDS!

We are Juliana and Baraka, the founders of a School, and together with our dedicated team of colleagues and volunteers, we work tirelessly to support vulnerable children—many of whom come from Maasai communities—through both a home and school in Sakala village, near Loliondo, Tanzania.

Nestled in the heart of Maasai territory, our village borders the world-renowned Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, both of which are recognized as global biological reserves for their exceptional wildlife. The community is safe, and the local people are exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and eager to connect with newcomers!

Our project was established in 2009 with the mission of providing quality education and improved living conditions for children living in poverty within our community. Our vision is to inspire both students and their families to reach their full potential, laying the educational foundation necessary for social and economic independence.

The Maasai are a semi-nomadic people living primarily in Kenya and Tanzania. They are renowned for their traditional way of life, centered around cattle herding, as well as their distinctive clothing and cultural ceremonies. While the Maasai have a deep connection to their land and customs, they face challenges such as land disputes and the pressures of modernization. Education and healthcare are often difficult to access, as their lifestyle tends to prioritize tradition over formal schooling. Nevertheless, many Maasai communities are working to preserve their heritage while embracing modern opportunities.

Over the past few years, we have made significant progress. We’ve built eight classrooms, two of which are currently being used as temporary dormitories for the boys, as the number of children grows each year. Today, 300 children are enrolled at our school, with over 200 living with us. We have 18 teachers and 9 support staff members dedicated to providing a nurturing learning environment.

Currently, our main focus is on improving the living conditions for the children. The girls' dormitories (including washrooms) are complete, but we urgently need to build dormitories and washrooms for the boys. We also plan to construct a dedicated nursery space for younger students and a volunteer house on campus, to ensure that volunteers will be closer to the school. In addition, we are working to plant trees on our grounds and improve existing facilities, such as the toilets and staff room.

In addition to general education, we run a health and education program that addresses key community challenges, such as HIV/AIDS and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), offering vital support in these areas.

If you need more information, we’re happy to answer all your questions and provide guidance on matters such as health, culture, weather, excursions, travel, visas, safety, and special events. Traveling independently is generally safe, and we’re happy to assist you with your journey to us, ensuring that someone is there to help you along the way.

Please feel free to reach out to us with any inquiries. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

We believe we can offer a life-changing experience to our volunteers!

Not only will you have the opportunity to help us tackle the great challenge of keeping the school running, but you will also gain a deeper understanding of our community, our country, and Africa as a whole.

You will be immersed in our daily life and gain a deep understanding of our culture, history, and language. We are confident that you will learn some Swahili and Maasai words, and you will have the chance to experience Maasai culture, including their traditions, homes, dances, and the Maasai market, among other aspects.

We love to show our volunteers typical Maasai villages and introduce them to Maasai families. Guests often enjoy gaining a unique insight into the Maasai’s traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, living in mud houses and maintaining a close bond with their cattle and other animals.

To enrich your stay even further, we offer the opportunity to organize safari trips to Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. Whether you prefer budget camping or a stay in hotels and lodges within the parks, we can arrange various types of safari experiences. Since we are so close to these iconic locations, even day trips are possible!

Please let us know if you would be interested in receiving a certificate of appreciation upon completion of your volunteer work, and we will be happy to arrange it for you.

    FUNDRAISING AND AWARENESS
To continue developing, improving conditions, and keeping the school operational, we primarily rely on fundraising and grants. While a lot of work is done every day, the biggest challenge we face is securing sufficient funding.

We would deeply appreciate the help of volunteers who can contribute new ideas for financing, establish partnerships, or create ways for us to generate independent income. If you have experience in grant writing, fundraising, report writing, or know organizations, businesses, or individuals who might be willing to support us, you could make a significant impact!

We are also constantly working to improve the project strategically—whether through streamlining processes like simplifying money transfers, collaborating with larger NGOs to expand our reach and knowledge, or other initiatives.

To gain further support in the future, we are focused on raising awareness for our project globally. Volunteers are invited to help manage our social media platforms (such as Facebook and Instagram) and create engaging content to increase visibility.

Update (12/2024): We are urgently seeking support to fund the roof of our new classrooms, which we aim to complete in time for the new school year in mid-January.

    ADDITIONAL HELP
Volunteers are also welcome to contribute their skills to our project, particularly within our school, health program, and community initiatives. This could include involvement in daily activities such as teaching English or other subjects, engaging in artwork with children, assisting with meal preparation, helping with the house tasks, supporting homework sessions, offering general counseling, assisting with computers and internet access, or contributing to gardening projects.

We hope you will feel at home and bring your own ideas and projects to enrich the experience.

  • Acomodação

    Acomodação

    ACCOMODATION
Our volunteers are provided with comfortable accommodations at the school in a dedicated volunteer section. There are several rooms and a shared living area. Each room is furnished with 4-6 bunk beds, and depending on the season and availability, you will either stay in a single or shared room (same gender). Each bedroom is connected to a private bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower, all with running water.

In addition, we provide large water buckets in every bathroom with clean water, as power cuts can occur daily for a few hours. Volunteers are provided with towels, bed linens, and blankets, all of which are laundered regularly. There is also a washing machine available for your use.

If you prefer more flexibility, there is plenty of space to bring your own sleeping bags, camping tents, or other gear. Single travelers are always welcome, and the environment is safe and supportive. We are happy to assist you in any way to ensure a comfortable stay.

    FOOD
Volunteers are provided with three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Vegetarian and vegan options are available, and we ensure that all meals are made from locally sourced, fresh, and nutritious ingredients. Meals are shared with other volunteers and the project staff, creating a warm and communal atmosphere.

Typical meals include rice, beans, cabbage, pasta, fish, meat, chapati, and fresh fruit, among others.

If you have any dietary restrictions, please inform us in advance so we can accommodate your needs. The cost for meals is $5 USD per day.

    INTERNET
While there is no Wi-Fi, the area has good 4G service. We recommend purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for reliable internet access.

    VISA INFORMATION AND COSTS
To comply with Tanzanian regulations, volunteers must obtain a TOURIST VISA. This visa can be acquired upon arrival at the airport or border crossing. Most visitors, including Europeans, Americans, and nationals from Commonwealth countries (such as New Zealand, Canada, and Australia), are required to obtain this visa. It is valid for 90 days.

    COSTS
USD $100 for American passport holders
USD $50 for all other countries
Both fees are to be paid in cash at the immigration office. Please refer to the Tanzania Tourism website for the latest updates.
Please note that Class G1 Work Visas (for volunteers, NGO workers, and missionaries) are usually too complicated to obtain and are unnecessary for short stays (less than 90 days). For stays longer than 3 months, please contact us for further visa information and associated costs.

HOW TO GET TO OUR PROJECT FROM ARUSHA
The closest international airport is Kilimanjaro Airport, located about 50 minutes from Arusha, the largest city in our region. Arusha Airport is also an option if you are traveling from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

From Arusha, you can take the Loliondo Coach bus to our project site, which takes approximately 6-9 hours and costs around 23,000 TZS (about 9 USD). The bus departs daily at 6:00 AM. Please note that the journey includes bumpy gravel roads through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, as we are quite remote. While this might be an adventure for those coming from the Western world, the route offers stunning landscapes and a chance to experience traditional African travel! 😉
We are happy to assist you with organizing your trip!

    WHAT TO PACK
In addition to suitable clothes for hot days, please bring light jackets for cooler nights and windy days. A raincoat is recommended if you are traveling during the rainy season. Be sure to bring flip-flops and hiking boots or shoes for exploring the surrounding mountains. Nights can be chilly, so don't forget a warm sweater and long pants (especially during the rainy season).

    Rainy season: October-December, March-May.

Since access to medication and other supplies can be limited, please bring sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and any personal medications. Malaria is rare at our altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level, but some travelers choose to take malaria prophylaxis.

We also recommend bringing a power bank, as power cuts occur daily for a few hours.
