  Hello and welcome to Unicorn-Strawberry-Flower-Land!... No, just kidding, itś Calabria ;-)
  We are a family of four: Jason (34), Sina (37) and their two daughters (9 & 5). We are living on the Ionic Coast of Calabria in the community of Badolato.
  Originally from Germany we moved to this beautiful place about three years ago. Our vision that lead us here was to find a place, where we could live close to nature with the warmth of the Mediterranean climate, within a connected but open neighborhood. A place which allows more of an outdoor-lifestyle, where we could also (un-)school our kids at home and keep our horses (and other animals) close to our home. And this is what we found!
  The village has two parts, one being the idyllic medieval Borgo situated on a hill overseeing the Mediterranian see, and the other part is the modern village directly on the shore.
  Our home lies about 3 km outside the actual village in a little hidden olive grove, shaded by ancient olive trees. For the past twenty years before we bought it, the land was managed in a conventional way mainly for harvesting olive oil. Which is also fine, of course, but not exactly our style. Also the house was rarely used and more like a storage. In 2023 we started to restore and expand the small building to serve as a family home for us. We love to work with wood and so we try to realize as much as possible out of wood, though by now we also learned to appreciate the advantages of stone and concrete ;-) On the land we started to change the management towards biological and to improve and regenerate the heavy clay soils. Around the house we try to build a more diverse garden-landscape with fruit trees, spaces for kids, flowers, bushes, etc.. . We like to work organically with the given resources and so the place is developing slowly step by step. Besides the work around house and land we spend a lot of time with our kids.
  We are happy to welcome (chaos approved) people who would like to stay with us and contribute to our little project. We are non-smokers and vegetarians , kind of spiritual and creative, more going-with-the-flow than planned through, non-dogmatic, uncomplicated, definitely not perfect but curious and always learning.

  Here in Calabria you can experience some of the old style Italian life with a special regional note. Also the hospitality of the Calabrese people is legendary. In and around Badolato there is a growing international community and occasionally there will be a meet-up with part of the "crowd" at the beach or for some kind of celebration.
  Beyond that you will take part in the life of an unschooling family. We love to cook and eat together and share new and old recipes, hear, make and share music, sit together at the fireplace, explore the nature around us and a lot more. If you are interested you can also join in the work with the horses, which is based on horsemanship principles.

  Ajuda

  What kind of help are we looking for ?
  • Our kids keep asking for new workawayers they can talk and play and have fun with :-) so yes, that would be really much appreciated by all of us! There are just not so many grown-ups around who have a lot of spare time to spend with the kids.
  Maybe you would like to pass on your skills and knowledge to them? Like outdoor skills, sports, music, arts,language, science....at the right time anything might be of interest.
  Or you just enjoy spending time with them, reading books, jumping with them on the trampoline, building huts or taking them to the beach, the forest, the playground etc.? Great! They will love it!
  
  • There is also always something to do in the development and maintenance of our house and land where we could need a helping hand including
  ◦ construction, mainly with wood
  ◦ pavements (wood, stone, concrete)
  ◦ gardening (composting, mowing, planting, creating)
  ◦ paving of paths
  ◦ fixing slopes, earthworks,building natural stone walls
  ◦ care and harvest of tree crops (olives, figs and more to come)
  ◦ creating spaces for kids
  ◦ animal care
  Usually we have ongoing projects you can just join in, but maybe you also have special interests or skills and want to start your own project. There are many possible fields of activity and there may arise even more we do not know about yet. There is a lot of learning by doing and if you have special skills in an area of interest we would love to learn from you.
  It would be helpful if you are used to work independently and join in with the everyday-tasks, because we can not guide you in every step. We enjoy working on eye level with good communication.

  Acomodação

  We have limited space inside so workawayers should be comfortable to sleep in a tent or tree-house. We have a comfortable big tent with two cabins, electricity, couch and sink, or you can of course also bring your own tent. There`s a shared kitchen, laundry, outdoor shower and compost toilet. We eat vegetarian and buy most of our fresh food on the local market.

  We live where we work and we work where we live, also the kids are around us most of the time, which means our workawayers are part of our everyday family life. Even if you want to focus more on the construction/garden work, you should be happy having the kids around you asking questions, wanting to participate and spending time with you.
  
  In your free time you can go hiking in the mountains, exploring the beautiful forests with clear rivers and waterfalls, go for a coffee in one of the bars around or enjoy time at the endless beaches... Also we can offer you to share our cars and e-bikes for independent mobility.
  
  Please organize your transport yourself, we can help you to find best travel connections and pick you up from the train station Badolato or Soverato, the airport or any spot in that region. The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme.
  On request we can send more pictures or also our thoughts on the planned and possible activity on a certain time.

  We have a small dog and a cat and at the moment a foster dog until he finds a new home. If you want to bring a pet just ask and we can see if it fits.
