We are a bilingual French/English couple. We lived together in the UK for 23 years. We've been in France for over 18 years. Yannick was a secondary school language teacher and Marion was a transport and logistics manager (road, rail and then express transport). Our shared passion is horses, riding and carriage driving. Yannick has worked as a riding instructor for the last 3 years in the UK, then in France, firstly in large riding schools in the region, then in the equestrian farm that we created and ran for over 10 years (our 20ha farm). Yannick continues to give riding tuition and to ride 2 of our horses. Marion continues to take part in driving competitions with her Shetlands and works as an estate agent selling houses. We are both fluent in French and English (bilingual) and Yannick is also fluent in Spanish and has a little knowledge of Portuguese and German. We're both open to different cultures and languages. Marion also enjoys painting, singing and gardening. Yannick likes to play the ukulele and sing. We love travelling and discovering different regions and countries.
We have since 2012 welcomed over 100 workawayers to our home. We love sharing our dream place and our love of animals with you, and finding out about your country and your culture. The farm is 55 acres of grassed paddocks surrounded by hedges and oak-trees. The countryside around here is very pretty with a network of chemins (tracks). Our nearest towns are 15/20 minutes drive away and although not totally isolated it is a small rural community. Our nearest towns are L'Isle Jourdain and Confolens, both pretty and historic on the river Vienne.

Volunteers will benefit from the multi cultural environment here with a settlement of various British families in a traditionally French rural community and some Dutch families. You will certainly have the opportunity to improve your French and/or English, and we welcome volunteers from all around the world. Discussions around the dinner table tend to be fun, multilingual and we all learn so much from each other's backgrounds and cultures.
We get involved with all aspects of our local community and volunteers are always welcomed to join in activities in and around the village and with the wider community.
We love sharing our lifestyle, languages and different experiences. We have 3 horses (one retired), 5 Shetlands, 2 dogs, a cat, 7 chickens, 3 ducks and 2 geese. We are quite active in the commune and you will be invited to share in the activities (meals, local market, Big Sing, painting classes, yoga, walking etc.) and visits of people in the area.

We are looking for someone who loves nature and animals and is willing to help us with the day-to-day tasks: looking after the animals, keeping the barn, garden and house clean and in good condition. There's often weeding to be done, hedges to be trimmed and so on. And sometimes there's a post or 2 to plant, a hole to dig for flowers etc. There's also mucking out , especially in winter.
It's important to say that we're in the middle of the countryside with no public transport. We have exceptional countryside all around us that you can explore. The two major towns (Poitiers and Limoges) are more than an hour's drive away. We have 3 small towns (12km and 25km away) with supermarkets and a few shops. Given the distances involved, we go there as little as possible.
In any case you should be flexible and adaptable and be prepared to help with all activities.. We would ask you to help at least four hours with us, five days a week. The most important to us is that you are cheerful and pleasant, happy to join in with whatever is going on and are reliable and conscientious with the tasks we ask you to help with, and flexible when required.
Length of stay is flexible but in general we now prefer short stays (couple of weeks or so) in Spring and Autumn, longer stays in winter (3 weeks+).

We offer your own bedroom or shared bedroom with another Workawayer (same gender) in our - strictly no smoking - centrally heated comfortable farmhouse with shared bathroom facilities. You provide your own toiletries but we will provide towels (less luggage for you). Meals would be shared with us, home cooked and varied, and if you wanted to cook a special dish for everyone during your stay from your own country /culture that would be great. And we especially love Workawayers who like to bake cakes ! We are not vegetarians and although we can accomodate someone who is this is simpler in the summer, although we would find it too difficult to accommodate a vegan. You would be expected to keep your room clean and tidy and help keep the communal areas of the house clean and tidy on a daily basis. We expect everyone to help with such activities as washing up, drying, sweeping the floors, laying the table and clearing up after meals just as part and parcel of normal communal living. You will be able to use the washing machine during your stay, generally organised on a weekly rota. We are definitely NON SMOKERS and we cannot accommodate anyone who is and we would not accept anyone who uses drugs.
Volunteers who enjoy animals and the countryside and outdoor life will love the environment and activities here. If you have a good level of riding you may get the opportunity to ride or learn to help with the carriage driving. The countryside is very rural, agricultural and very pretty. We are approximately one hour's drive from Limoges or Poitiers from where we can pick you up from the airport but if possible we would prefer you to make your way to our local railway station at Bellac, 25 mins drive away, and we can collect and return you there. Be aware that there are no public transport facilities in the immediate vicinity and very limited and expensive taxi services. A lot of the activity here is physical and can be tiring so you should be fit, healthy and strong and enjoy working outdoors. Please bring appropriate clothing (wellies and waterproofs in rainy seasons, plus work gloves and sturdy clothing for work).
