We are a three generations family and we are living at our farm all together.
That is me, Hubert and my wife Karin, our doughters Regina (actually lives in Munich which is about 1.5 hours away), Antje with her Husband Andy and of course there is Grandma.

We have a Organic farm with 40 dairy cows and a small beer garden in the Allgäu, in the south of Germany. Furthermore we run a small Hotel in Oberstaufen.
Our farm is located apart in a small valley and is sourrounded by forests, pasture lands and a small stream flows along the farm. In the summer we also run a cozy beer garden and sometimes workshops take place here.
The countryside and rural way of life is what you can experience with us here.

Wir haben einen Bioland Bauernhof im Allgäu mit 40 Milchkühen und einem Biergarten. Außerdem betreiben wir noch ein Hotel in Oberstaufen.
Der Hof liegt abseits in einem kleinen Tal umgeben von Wald und Weiden. Ein kleiner Bach plätschert am haus vorbei. Auf unserem Hof wohnen und Arbeiten drei Generationen. Im Sommer betreiben wir außerdem direkt vor dem hof einen gemütlichen Biergarten und manchmal finden hier kleine Seminare statt.
Die Allgäuer Landschaft und Lebensart können sie bei uns live erleben.
Unsere Familie lebt Algäuer Traditionen und Moderne Lebensart gleichzeitig.

There is always something to do and the there are many different types of work on our farm. This can be rip stable work, milking, as well as weeds, machine and building maintenance and occasional assembly work. The type of work also depends on the season and on your qualifications and interessts. If necessary, it is also possible to help in the kitchen of the beer garden in the summer or in our hotel in Oberstaufen.

Es handelt sich um alle Arbeiten die auf einem Bauernhof anfallen. Stallarbeit, Melken, sowie Unkraut herausreißen, Maschienen- und Gebäudepflege sowie hin und wieder Montagearbeiten. Je nach Fähigkeiten und anfallenden Arbeiten kann auch in der Küche des Biergartens und im Hotel in Oberstaufenmitgeholfen werden.

We can offer a private room. The rest of the house is shared: bathroom, kitchen, livingroom, laundry, terrace, huge garden and WiFi.
We also have parking-space right in front of the house and a bike shed if needed.

Es steht ein privates Zimmer zur verfügung. Der Rest des Hauses wird gemeinschaftlich genutzt. Außerdem haben wir einen großen Garten mit Terrase, genügend Parkflächen und einen Fahrradschuppen. Das W-Lan darf mitbenutzt werden.

The beautiful Allgäu countryside can be explored directly from the farm. We have a lot of hiking and bike trails in the area and the Alps, with high mountains where you can do all kinds of outdoor activities and sports like hiking, climbing or skiing, are really close.
The next village to the farm is called Sibratshofen, where about 350 people live. But in the near sourrounding, about 11 km appart there is the City Isny with about 10,000 inhabitants. Isny is home to our main facilities, it's a center for culture, concerts and people. Isny has a nice historic center with a shopping street and many bars to go out. Kempten with about 70 000 residents is the biggest city in the area.

Die Allgäuer Landschaft lässt sich direkt vom Hof aus erleben. In der näheren Umgebung gibt es einige Wander- und Radwege und richtige Berge, die auch zum Begsteigen geeignet sind, sind etwa 20-30 km entfernt.
In dem nahegelegenen Dorf Sibratshofen wohnen ca. 350 Menschen. Die nächst größere Stadt ist Isny mit etwa 10 000 Einwohner. Hier befinden sich zahlreiche Geschäfte und es finden viele Veranstaltungen wie Konzerte oder Feste statt. Das etwa 25 km entfernt gelegene Kempten hat ca. 70 000 Einwohner.

In this Workaway, we haven’t stayed at the farm, but asked to volunteer in the family hotel in Oberstaufen instead (the hotel is mentioned in the property description). We stayed at the hotel for a month during the end of the winter season (March).
Karin and her team made a wonderful effort to provide us a good accommodation and everything we… read more could ask for. We were the only Workawayers among the paid staff there, which felt a bit lonely sometimes, since there was no one to share the Workaway experience with, but we were also happy to have some quality couple time and focus on ourselves during our free hours. The opportunities in and around Oberstaufen are amazing, both in winter and summer time. The hotel is located just in front of a mountain chain, and the view from the window is amazingly dramatic – like in romantic paintings. When we first arrived, it was hard to grasp that the landscape around us is real- and that people can actually live and work at such a breathtaking place surrounded by mountains, forests and waterfalls. Oberstaufen is a cozy Bavarian city with smiling people and a huge hiking community. Around Oberstaufen there are several ski resorts and ski rentals available just in a short bus ride, and it’s also a great starting point if you want to hike to numerous mountain summits in Allgaeu. One can also cross the border to Austria in just an hour of walking. :blush: We got at least (!) two free days a week, and sometimes when there was no work, we were generously given even more time off. On our free days, we went snowboarding and climbing up some local hills.

At first Yotam was working outdoors, helping the handyman with uncomplicated maintenance projects, and Evelyn was working in the kitchen, helping to arrange the breakfast and washing the dishes. However, because it was a low season at the hotel, sometimes we would both go to Hubert’s farm for a whole day and help with some outside jobs there. End of the winter and beginning of spring means a lot of monotonous work in every Bavarian household – such as cleaning the outside area from rubbish after the snow; shoveling some fields from stones and pebbles, picking up tree branches. This work was a bit tiring, but we understood it’s something that needs to be done. At some days the tasks at the farm were special – one day we helped rebuilding the fence around summer fields for the cows, and another day we were planting a lot of pine trees and making Germany a little bit greener, which made us happy. :blush:
The food was plentiful – every morning we had an amazing Bavarian breakfast with a whole lot of variety (fresh bread, meat, local cheese, eggs, yoghurts, cereal, muesli, fruits and vegetables), and it was nice that the whole team was always having breakfast together. For lunch, we could pack ourselves anything we wanted from the breakfast buffet. For dinner, the cook was cooking a meal for all. Since we are vegetarians, we agreed to cook our own dinner, in order not to complicate the meal choice for the rest of the team. Karen kindly provided us the products for cooking and made sure our fridge was never empty. Some German communication was necessary for that, and over time we learned how to communicate when we needed something.
The only regret we had is not coming during a higher touristic season – earlier in the winter or later in spring, when the hotel is full of life and not in a state of seasons transition. Perhaps the work then could be more dynamic, and the weather would allow us do more human service, wood chopping, grass cutting or planting. :blush: We would also recommend you to make sure you work on your German skills if you wish to be involved in guests service – the majority of the guests are German, and the hotel team itself is very international, so German is the only common language for all. We really thank Karin, Hubert and the team for their patience with us as German beginners - everyone spoke slowly and clearly enough for us to learn a lot of new words about kitchen, service, farm and work tools, and when we had some communication struggles we would just write Karin via workaway messages and Google Translate each other’s answers. This trick worked really great for our side, and hope that for Karin as well.

We recommend coming to this place if you want to learn about authentic Bavarian culture and enjoy both hotel/farm work and nature exploration!
