I have been living in Sri Lanka for the last 36 years, that is more than half of my life. Last 15 years I have been looking after stray-animals. Our shelter has cats and dogs, abandoned puppies and kittens, rescued accident victims and animals abandoned just because of old age, chronic disease or simply because owners left the country. Too many reasons in Sri Lanka to abandon animals, the worst of it is the belief that spaying them is sin, but discarding unwanted litters doesn't seem to be sin. For some people however it is a financial problem to get their animals spayed, for those we offer free clinics. Also we offer free treatment of sick animals.

They will learn about people's attitudes towards animals (sometimes not a pleasant encounter), but they may also be an inspiration for them
Even though we have staff to do the feeding and cleaning we need help with these basic jobs too, but mostly we need help with bathing the dogs, brushing and other treatments and care and of course giving them love and attention, taking them out for walks, playing and exercise.
Volunteers with social media skills are also very welcome to update and maintain our Facebook and Instagram page to find new homes for the dogs, sponsorships and more volunteers.

One Single room and two double room, each with an attached bathroom. Please note: the rooms are in the middle of the shelter and there could be some barking at any time, usually the dogs sleep at night, however, if something disturbs them and wakes them up, there could be some barking and if all bark (160 dogs) it's loud.
There is also a guesthouse nearby (2 min walks) where you can stay for a good price if they have rooms available.
Since our shelter is in the middle of nowhere (country-side) we have no near-by tourist attractions, only the Botanical Garden of Peradeniya is relatively close (10 km). Since every time new people arrive the dogs take time to get used to them, volunteers, who plan to stay only a very short period are not encouraged, going out over the weekend and coming back also would be a disruption of the bonding process. Arrival time should be morning or early afternoon. The animals in this shelter are not living in kennels, some are living right in front of the volunteers' rooms, some are living in the kitchen, where we all get together to cook and some even join us in the dining room. So is a full day workaway and except for the time the volunteers retire in their rooms, they are in community with animals... so this place is really only fun for very dedicated volunteers, who enjoy the presence of four-legged companions
Furthermore, you have the opportunity to go with the dogs for some jungle walks and spot monkeys, deer and parrots regularly and we provide amazing vegan meals.
