My partner and I have a 16 hectare organic farm in Cooktown.

We have many pet animals including four dogs, two horses, a goat, chickens and ducks.

I am a wildlife carer so we currently have orphaned native animals which we need help caring for. The number varies depending on releases. Currently we have 5 joeys, 2 cockatoos, a frogmouth, a kingfisher and a Galah.

So you must love animals if you want to apply to help us. :)

Help needed gardening, housework and feeding the orphans. Plus lots of fun projects.

You will be able to experience life on a typical Australian farm. Help with daily chores including feeding animals. Home cooked meals include traditional Australian meals such as camp oven stew and dumplings, chicken curry made from fresh herbs, fresh vegetables and seasonal fruit. Historical Cooktown is 20km away and offers many tourist attractions. There is an opportunity to go fishing in our boat depending on the weather. Great bird watching and walks along the river.
Get to meet and help with orphaned animals.

We are flexible with your time off and Cooktown is well worth a visit. Historic Cooktown became a thriving port during the gold rush era after it was discovered by Captain James Cook when the HMS Endeavour hit a reef in 1770. Stroll through the town and you will get a sense of its prosperous past from the handmade stone guttering lining the wide streets and the graceful, well-preserved architecture.

I really enjoyed staying with Cass and Rick for four weeks. They are so lovely and cordial people and I really felt at home at their beautiful place. It's is so unique to experience the australian wildlife at close quarters and it was amazing to see so many wallabys and have a real wildlife experience. Where else do you have the chance to learn… read more how to feed and toilet a little baby wallaby (which will be your roommate as well if you are lucky), feed a frogmouth and a curly, learn how to pollinate homegrown vanilla plants or to lift ginger and tumeric?
In addition Cass and Rick have two lovely dogs (Blue and Mako). I will really miss to cuddle and play with them. But most of all I will miss my little baby wallaby Benny which I fell totally in love with. Thank you Cass for this priceless and unique experience which I will never forget!

Cass is a really good cook, the meals were delicious and the fridge was always well-filled with great food (fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, bread, many avocados and much more). Cass even bought cereals and fruit yoghurt specially for me (and always asked if I need anything else from the supermarket). Moreover she organised me the lifts to Cooktown and back to Cairns so i didn't have to take the bus and was able to meet some lovely local people. Thank you so much for that Cass :blush:

The accomodation is exactly the one which is described and which you see at the pictures as well, it is basic (as Cass already wrote on her profile) but totally okay and due to the gekko (and the bats) you won't spot many insects in the shed which is really pleasant.:blush: You have to know that you do not have a private room for yourself because your space of the private sphere is just curtained off. That is a bit in need of getting used to because on and off it is used as a walk-through room as well.
If you stay with Cass and Rick you will have a real wildlife experience and spend a great time there. But apart from the animals you should like gardening and weeding as well and don't have a problem with working in the hot australian sun.
After a while of time you have spent there you will know what tasks are to do daily and so you are able to allot time by yourself which I really enjoyed. Cause as a result I had some time left to read a book, enjoy the nature and countryside idyll or just sit in the garden, listen to some music und watch the wallabys. That was just amazing! But you will also have some time explore Cooktown (I totally recommend flinch bay, the botanical gardens, the waterfront and of course the Captain James Cook Museum). Cass and Rick endeavoured that I was able to explore other places of interest so they booked me in a mangrove watch boat tour and a saltmarsh which were both impressive and really interesting! They also managed that I was able to see a big saltwater crocodile in the wild which is living in the river nearby (we drove there three times until we finally spotted it).
In addition I had the chance to meet some of their friends as well. They were all so kind and lovely and it was great to get in touch with other locals as well.

Summarizing I can totally recommend to stay with Cass and Rick! If you love animals (you will meet dogs, wallabys, horses, chicken, ducks, a frogmouth, a curly or maybe a sugar glider or other injured or orphaned animals) and working in the nature and you want to explore the everyday life on an australian farm which is a great animal sanctury as well this will be the right place for you!
