    Descrição

Hello, Martin and I would love you to join us. We are located in Hunua, South Auckland. We both work at home.

If you want to experience our lifestyle but enjoy being not too far from civilization then this is the place for you!

We have Highland Cattle (20+) and Suffolk Sheep (20+) on 50 acres. We also have Chickens and two Labradors.
NB We sometimes have more than 2 Labradors, at our home, as we doggy sit friend's Labradors....so sometimes it's a bit dog-crazy! Lol

Our lifestyle block is a very scenic piece of land that has small patches of bush, pine trees, a mini water fall, rolling hills and wonderful views out to the Hunua Valley and Ranges.

What is produced on our farm is for our private consumption.
We have a large vegetable garden and some fruit trees. We try to keep up with excess veggies by freezing or bottling them however our chickens often enjoy items that go to seed!

    All meals are provided.

As we are a hobby beef and sheep farm our freezers are normally full of meat.
The veggie garden provides us with various produce and when the chickens are happy we have a good supply of fresh eggs!
Catherine is vegetarian (Martin is not). We welcome Vegans, Vegetarians and Carnivores!

    Please note:
Our farming day can start around 7.30am. (earlier for the month of July - lambing time)

We are happy to share our knowledge/experience with you. There is so much you can learn about farm life, Highland Cattle, Sheep, Chickens and dog care!

NB farming is not always about cute baby animals. Where there is live stock, there is dead stock.

Plus.... we have a pest (rabbits, possums, stoats) eradication program in place.

  • Ajuda

    Ajuda

First of all: No experience is required, just a good attitude!

Hay gets made in January - this is definitely a case of "many hands make light work"

Previous Workawayers - that we have hosted, have done a fantastic job planting and putting mulch around the trees on our property. But there is always space to plant more trees. We put mulch around the existing trees annually. Planting trees/shrubs is more an Autumn/Winter job (March - August)

Tasks that we may need help with in the warmer months (Spring/Summer - ie Sept - Feb) involve weed control. This means spraying noxious weeds (with a chemical) - such a gorse, ragwort, Thistles, blackberry etc. It is also a time for property maintenance. (reparing fences, gates etc)

We lamb from July to early August. During this time we start early (ie as soon as it is light enough to check on the ewes)
During July we don't often venture far from our farm. Watching for lambs and lambing issues is our main concern.

As of now (April 2026) we have ten calves. All of the calves are at "school "- ie calf training - where they are taught to wear a halter and to trust humans.
Calf "school" happens 3 or 4 times a week.

There are always tasks to do.... Such as drenching, castrating, tagging, docking, shearing, calving, calf training, lambing, hand rearing a lamb, planting, mulching, weed control, hay making, veggie garden care and fencing maintenance - however these tasks vary with the seasons (and weather)
The on going duties (that are daily) are chicken, dog and stock care.

The Highland Cattle ALWAYS love a grooming session 😊.

  • Acomodação

    Acomodação

We live in a modern, spacious house, where downstairs we have a room "reserved" for Workawayers. It has 2 single beds (that can be made into a big bed for a couple). This room also has an en-suite toilet/shower and a kitchenette.
We enjoy the company of our Workawayers and for most meals we have them together. And you are more than welcome to "hang out" (upstairs) in your free time, evenings etc with us.

  • Algo mais...

    Algo mais...

In good traffic, we are 40 minutes from Auckland Airport.

It takes 15 minutes drive (max) to get to the nearest town (Papakura) where there are shops and train/bus links. We are happy to work in with our guests plans. We can take you to this link.

A shorter drive, in the other direction, gets you to Hunua Village or the Hunua Ranges. There are walking tracks and a magnificent water fall at Hunua Regional Park.

Hobbiton is less than 2 hours from us.

Having your own vehicle is not necessary. (as long as you are happy being on the farm).
But as mentioned, we are more than happy to drive you to the bus/train link. (Papakura)
