We had an exciting adventure at Pelorus Sounds! Picked up and drop off at Havelock was really great, thanks a lot.
We spent a week a their beautiful place. It's really remote, back to the basic and into the Wild, so it's a unique experience! The start of the day was great: slow mornings with amazing coffees. Cool tasks to do with big (and loud
… read more ;-) ) machines and will not be asked to do with other hosts, haha. They live in a quite social community (with parties etc), but they are easygoing whether you want to join them or not. We are amazed by the way they live and how they are able to do so. Thankful for this opportunity!This Workawayer has chosen to keep their profile private.

I spent one week in the beautiful Pelorus Sound with Paul and Barb. Outside with Paul, I mostly helped him cut, load, transport, and unload firewood. I also used the log cutter to split the large pieces into firewood. I did weeding in the greenhouse, cleaned the chicken coop, and helped Barb with the gardens. Paul and I also hiked up the mountain
… read more track to check on the water supply a couple times. Inside with Barb, I helped clean out and organize a closet, helped prepare dinner regularly and cleaned up after meals. Paul was a great teacher with the equipment. I felt very confident using the chainsaw and the log cutter thanks to him. They are kind people and fun to talk with over various subjects. Very good experience, Paul has a HUGE sense of humor and Barb is a talented cook (her food is truly addictive). The atmosphere of the house is warmly and the place peacefull. Last but not least, the views and landscapes are breathtaking.

What an amazing place!
Firstly, the setting itself is hard to beat, it's beautiful. I can't decide what I found the most magical -- was it watching the sunrise from the deck, as the boats headed out down below for their day's jobs? Was it kayaking along the shore in the quiet of the morning, listening to the sounds of birds coming from the
… read more forest? Was it watching it all from high above on the hill, with only the sounds of the surrounding forest to hear? The area is definitely a little slice of paradise.
Secondly, Paul and Barb are extremely kind in the way they look after their workawayers. They definitely went out of their way to make my stay great, past what I would expect from a host - though I don't want to set expectations by giving specifics! They also immediately integrated us into their life and community, and I felt like I got to live through a glimpse of what life is like in the Pelorus Sound, and it sure is interesting! Barb has some excellent cooking skills under her sleeve, so despite the boat access only thing making grocery shopping more difficult, it was definitely the tastiest stay I've done. Both Barb and Paul have plenty of very interesting stories as well, and it was very entertaining to listen to them. We loved our time at Paul and Barb's. They're very kind and generous and great fun to be around. Our tasks were varied and weather dependant, so outdoor jobs when it was dry (helping to make a veg garden) and indoor jobs when it was raining (cleaning and helping out in the kitchen). I tried sea fishing and kayaking for the first time. I had oyster buffet at the beach on the day of my 30th birthday, Another workawayer Zoey made me Victoria sponge, Paul shared his precious moonshine home brew alcohol drinks with me, Barb always make super creative and tasty dinner, they made my birthday experience so special.
Pelorus sound is such a peaceful and beautiful place, I can never have enough of watching the sea and mountains though the balcony at different times of the day. There is no sunset but you can see the sunrise in the peaceful morning, hearing the birds sing, boats come and go and the sun shines on the sea.
There are so much more precious moments I can't write all down here, but they will stay in my memory, I really appreciate this precious experience with them as a part of my life.

The meals were delicious and we all took turns cooking. If you like coffee, you're in for a real treat as Paul rivals the best baristas with his personal espresso machine- you will be spoiled!!
Barb and Paul are a great couple, easy to get along with, tell great stories and love to laugh and share. When they dropped me off at the station I felt like I was hugging family goodbye 💜🌀💜
