Hi there, my name is Monica and I traveled as a wwoofer in Ireland, working in organic farms and I enjoyed workaway in Florida, working on sailing boats (I am a scuba-dive instructor). 🙂
On September 2022 I left Italy with my motorbike for a solo trip to the Middle Est which was intensive ❤

Now it's time for "Big-Plane": on october 2024 I start my solo RWT with Kappa, my KTM790Adv starting in South-America 😊
I'm curreclty looking for someone that can help me during the jorney: I don't want only ride, but I want live the places I will go through.

I'm scuba diving and freediving teacher, i love to teach to go under water and I spend a lot of my free time in the Sea. I love take photos, I'm working about my web site (www.monicapress.com), where it's possible to see some of my photos. I love the boats, I had a small (very small: 3mt) sailing boat which I used in the lake.

Connecting, sharing, experiencing.
So far I’m using workaway since 10 years now and I can say that it changes my life or, at least, my way to travel. During these years I learned a lot, I worked in organic-farm, in hostel, in art-school, in wild-life project, in family etc etc. I’m not scared about hard working: I've been a bricklayer, a painter,… read more I've built straw walls, I've driven tractors, I've learned to use gardening tools, I've fed chickens, horses, sheep, cats, and dogs, I've learned to grow vegetables, clean gardens, clean bathrooms in the hostels I've worked in, and much more.
For me, workaway is a way to connect with the people of the countries I visit and to better understand their customs and traditions. Sometimes the experiences have been simply incredible, and I'm still in touch with many of the people who hosted me. Sometimes they've been tough, sometimes not exceptional, but still worth living. It happens, it's part of travel and life. That's why, after 10 years, this is the first time I've given it two stars and a place. I was supposed to stay a week, but I left on the fourth day.
The people who were hosting me started ignoring me, speaking only to each other in Japanese, completely excluding me from any kind of interaction. They only answered my questions with a curt "yes" or "no," without engaging me. The awkwardness began to grow, and I told them that for me, that wasn't the right way to experience something. They didn't even ask me why I wanted to leave and continued on with their business.
To my pressing questions about why they started not talking to me, the husband finally decided to answer: apparently, the first day I took the dog out, I didn't let him go the right way. Let me explain: when I went out with the dog, I followed where he pulled and made him poop where he stopped to do it (I then dug a hole in the ground, put his waste in it, and covered it, as the wife had explained). Apparently, this was unacceptable. The dog didn't do his business exactly where the wife had shown me, and I had taken the initiative without asking him. Could this be a reason to stop talking to someone you're hosting? Could this be a reason to blame someone, telling them "I broke their rules without asking?" But instead of stopping talking to me, why didn't they tell me? To me, this isn't a desire to share an experience; it's a lack of will. Another reason she gave me was that the wife (who doesn't speak English well) thought she'd explained to me what needed to be done in the garden, but when she ended her explanation with "I'll show you better later," I figured there were other things to do. When the husband told me to go to the garden one morning, I told him that the wife hadn't explained everything to me. Apparently, however, that was enough for the wife and she took my statement as offensive.

Now I'll explain how they treated me (I should point out that I told them these things in person, specifying that I would have written it in the feedback, instead if it had been up to them, they wouldn't have even asked me why I was leaving). During those days, I was on my female period and told them I didn't want to go to the Onsen where you have to be completely naked. I told them I'd rather stay home, but they said that wasn't possible, that I'd have to go. I explained that with my female period, I'd rather not go, but there was no way. They told me they never leave anyone alone at home, but I wasn't at their house, but at the restaurant they run. When I insisted, the husband explained that the restaurant where they'd put me to sleep, two kilometers from their house, wasn't theirs and the owners didn't know they were using it to let strangers sleep. Furthermore, it seems that not all the owners were aware that the place was rented. He told me it would be best not to arouse the neighbors' suspicions because people like to gossip and it could backfire. This in itself isn't fair, as the people staying there should have the freedom to go there at their needs, but after her explanation, I didn't want to put them in a difficult situation, so I agreed to go with them.
In three days, we went out to a restaurant twice without being able to refuse, and that's not fair, as if I don't want to spend money to eat at a restaurant, you can't force me to spend my own money.
One afternoon, her husband walked into the restaurant where they had put me to sleep without knocking, and I was in my underwear.

While using Workaway shouldn't just be a way for travelers to live and eat for free (and that certainly isn't the case for me), for hosts it shouldn't just be a way to find someone to help them, because otherwise they wouldn't be able to afford to pay someone to do so. I expect my hosts to be willing to challenge themselves in the same way I am. Stopping contacting me without giving me any feedback on what I'm doing simply isn't the spirit of this site, otherwise there wouldn't even be a feedback section.

If it's truly an exchange, it needs to be mutual, not one-way.

I know I'll receive negative feedback from them, and that they'll only do it after I've left mine, but I don't care. I've had so many incredible experiences using this site that I think it's right and proper to leave this experience as well.
