    Description

We are a party of two, tending to 12 acres in upstate New York, on the land of the Cayuga people within the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. We're about 20 minutes southeast of Ithaca (home of Cornell University and Ithaca College) in a small town called Brooktondale, NY- located nearly next door to Shindagin Hollow, a state forest known as the 'Promised Land' to many mountain bikers. One of us hails from Maryland and is a hoola hoop dancer / teacher of tiny humans / astrological counselor / sexuality educator, and the other is from Puerto Rico and works in the technology field by day and the pottery field by night. Both English and Spanish are spoken here. It is very sparsely populated with other humans directly around where we live. The birds and bees and trees are our neighbors!

We currently have several garden zones we tend, and are constantly expanding! Other projects include: beekeeping, mushroom log inoculation, fruit tree pruning/orchard maintenance, forest management, maple syrup making, garden & small building construction, harvesting, fencing, cleaning projects, herbal medicine making, and much more! We are still definitely beginners in the world of permaculture, food-production, and healing with plants, and have also learned a tremendous amount in this first couple years of integrated intentional living in more harmony with the land. We hope you'll come through! In the warmer months, there are waterfalls around town, many of which have swimming holes to enjoy! In the colder months (& we do mean cold) there are many outdoor activities for the snow-lovers to enjoy. Workaway'ers will primarily eat vegetarian fare, and we do occasionally share meals together (often lunches, with a shared dinner, here & there). Right now, we are asking for folks to stay for 2 weeks at a time, with the possibility of extending if it feels good for all and schedules allow. We are both practicing astrologers, artists, and plant-lovers. We have three precious bunny friends who live in the house with us. There is a simple tiny house/meditation nook with a bed that workaway'ers can sleep in-- or feel free to tent it up somewhere on the land, if you prefer. We have a tent you can use, if you like. LGBTQ/queer folks and people of color are very welcome here! Cheers & Peace--

You will get to be in a super beautiful, quiet natural area alongside kind, fun people with varied interests who are open and excited about exchanging ideas. We hope to provide a space where lots of mutual learning can happen. Some of our non-farming-related passions and abilities include: pottery, hoola hoopdance, astrology, blacksmithing, social justice work, wildlife rehabilitation, and salsa dancing.

During your stay here, you could find yourself: sheet-mulching & laying down woodchips for active gardens or future growing spots, felling a tree with our resident lumberjack, stacking firewood or gathering kindling, harvesting herbs for making teas, tinctures, salves and infused oils, outbuilding construction, mushroom inoculation, moving stones to create a labyrinth, chipping wood branches, setting up composting bins, building gray water systems, making biochar, making maple syrup, preserving food for the winter, and many other possibilities.

There is a modest tiny house/meditation nook structure with a bed + desk in it where you are welcome to stay (and outdoor shower + outdoor composting toilet), or, feel free to tent it up somewhere on the land, if you prefer (we have a tent you can use, if desired). We also do have a yurt on the premises, which is mostly occupied during the warmer months. If it should become available, you're welcome to stay there, too. So think: min. camping to max. glamping accommodations. ( :

We are 20 minutes away from town, though there is a bus line available a few miles (~4.5) away. There is a modest, college-town-style 'downtown' area with restaurants and an indy movie theater and all the small town charm you can imagine. There's also a regular mall + big box stores not too far away from downtown. Some other notable features include: a nice science center, an amazing children's garden, a couple of universities (Ithaca College & Cornell U.) with lots happening including music performances, lectures, films, etc., nights of salsa and swing dancing in town, Cayuga lake (of "Finger Lakes" fame), lots of state parks and forests, and wonderful farmers markets.
