Description
Kia ora – we are Jojo and George, a couple with no kids in our 50’s.
We live with our dog, Taco, and around 30 chickens, on 5 acres in the north [Port Fitzroy] of Aotea, Great Barrier Island.
We have a fruit orchard, an olive grove and vege gardens, we are not fully organic but do aim to be as organic as possible. -

We are looking for a motivated couple or two friends to come and help us out. You both must be self-starters and able to think logically and for yourselves.
We are looking at around 20 hours per week where we would all work together or branch off on different tasks. Depending on the length of days, it could be over three or four days per week. Whatever suits.
Depending on what skills you can bring, we are keen on.
• Gardening / weeding / pruning / seed raising / harvesting / clearing
• Composting / worm-farming
• DIY / painting/building
• Walking track creation & maintenance
• Animal husbandry
• General property maintenance & upkeep / weed-eating / lawns
• Firewood prep (depending on the season)
• Cooking
• General house tasks / window cleaning
• Whatever skills you can bring to us and enjoy doing!
With regards to help – we want you to enjoy it here – so we can work out what you enjoy doing that can help us out – there is always something to do here – vast and varied and we’d love to have your help, ideas and contributions!
We both work (George full-time – and Jo part-time and sometimes from home) it may be that some days, we’ll leave you to it, other days we can work together. Fun! We can work out what days you want to help so you can have time to enjoy all that the Barrier has to offer, which is a lot! -

Hébergement
Your accommodation is very private (away from our main house) with stunning sea views and separate entry track. It is very warm and homely. It is self-contained with basic kitchen for meal preparation, has a queen bed, plus a camp bed is available if you were friends who didn’t want to share. There is a bush composting loo and a separate building with a shower and hand-basin.
Great Barrier Island is completely off-grid [bring your torch]. There is limited power at your accommodation – only phones can be charged and possibly a lap-top on sunny days.
We collect our own rainwater and don’t have a lot of water storage tanks. A part of being off-grid means water needs to be used mindfully - but we are close to the sea and fresh water swimming holes.
There is a washing machine at the main house but we do only wash clothes when they actually need it, not after every wear!
The days we work together we would have a shared lunch during that time.
We can supply basic breakfast items; homemade bread, yoghurt, and other general bits and bobs, and seasonal fruit & veges from the garden for you to prepare the other meals yourself. There will be the odd shared dinner depending on how the week is looking for us all.
We are dairy, wheat-eating, meat-eaters, as organically and free-range as possible. We will do our best to accommodate any simple dietary requirements, but as it can be a bit challenging with supplies here, you may wish to bring specialty food from the mainland. -
Autres infos...
Have a look on great barrier website in NZ – so much fun and beauty here.
There are many options for your days off if you want to explore. There are campgrounds and huts if you wanted a night away, stunning beaches, walks & hikes, hot-springs, surfing, swimming, diving, fishing, kayaking, hunting, bike tracks, etc. – we will do our best to help you with transport, but hitchhiking is a fun/safe option here and a great way to meet the locals. We may also be able to loan you our push bikes and there is a kayak which is easily launched in the bay just down the road from us.
Port Fitzroy is pretty basic – just the local store, fuel-pumps on the wharf and the boat-club bar/restaurant opened a couple of nights a week. There is a Saturday morning café in the next bay. Down south of the island there are cafes and bars.
No smoking please. Great Barrier Island is a fire risk area. Vaping is not ideal either thanks.
No pets – Taco is enough! You must like dogs as he will lean on you! -
