Hi Workawayer's, I’m Karen.
Strong, fit people preferred 25+
Building skills are an advantage.
If you like to keep fit whilst taking on a challenge this is the place for you.
Good English is nessasary.
Work hard in the morning and enjoy the wildlife and property in the afternoon.
The usual tasks are:
Picking up sticks and branches taking them to a fire pile
Cutting down some small weedy trees and getting them to the fire pile
Weeding
Managing burn piles
Moving rocks about in the creek to form a rock pool
Emptying gutters of leaves
Track maintenance
And plenty more.
When you come here it's NOT all about the animals, it's working in the bush, to maintain wildlife, habitat.
I live on 11 Acres of real (native) Australian Bush with winding tracks and Rainforest along a rocky creek.
It contains a few rare native plants and there are lots of different ferns, palms, rainforest plants, vines and very tall gum trees.
The creek has natural beauty even when it is dry.
Hand raised Wallabies lay about in the bush on hot days, and emerge in the afternoon for a graze, and wild possum’s roam around at night.
I renovated a site office and turned it into a home to temporarily live in. Now 15 years later it needs a bit or repair but still liveable, and the new house is finally going up.
A shipping container provides work shop and storage. And a second container has been turned into backpackers accommodation with bunk beds, but there is no heating or cooling, so you have be tough and live within the elements.
My workawayers are allowed one square foot of wall space to leave there international mark. The wall is nearly full, and is fun to read.
This property is totally self sufficient which means there are no phone cables, no power lines and no water pipes........a "stand alone" solar system and very noisy generator provides electricity, water from tanks and mobile phone and wireless Internet have great reception. BRILLIANT!
But this does mean restrictions on power and water. So peeing outside is necessary!
Experience with manual labor is preferred, or have building skills.
The work is hard but rewarding.
The animals you might find here are:
Red Necked Wallaby's
Swamp Wallaby's
Paddymelons
Koalas
Thousands of wild birds
Frogs
Water Dragons
Land Mullets
Goannas
Bandicoots
Snakes
Ticks
Spiders
Big Ants
Leaches and heaps more but it depends on the season.

I only take people for short stays 7-10 days.
I can pick you up from Taree train station, or the state to state Premier Bus/Coaches stop at Nabiac.
Greyhound Busses DON'T stop in Nabiac.
If you have your own car it's only 20 minuets to the beautiful beaches of Forster and Tuncurry or you can come with me into town on a day off.
I'm a licenced wildlife carer and a conservationist and my property is certified as "land for wildlife"
I also have a Certificate 3 in Conservation and land management, and Cert 2 in Horticulture
PLEASE NOTE: I only provide 3 meals a day, so if you want anything to snack on between meals or alcohol they are at your own expense.
On Days off we usually go into town and do shopping and sight seeing but you feed yourselves for lunch and dinner.

I was a little hesitant about two 21yr olds, but these guys were great. Always happy and could take a joke. They got stuck into anything I threw at them and we got heaps done.

She also helped me rolling up a shade cloth cover that is over the veranda for shade in summer which is a tricky job. My week with Karen was wonderful. I felt like back in my childhood. Being in the forest, making fires and just work with my hands. Sometimes it was hard work in the forest but it's nice to see what we worked after a day.

What a girl, Véro is fantastic and I'm glad to have been her host. Her disability isn't a problem at all, we went swimming at the local pool, and Véro was determined to get in the creek to cool off, and she sure did.

Maggie did a lot of work for me and even faced a fear of heights cleaning out the gutters.
I don't think bush work was her favourite thing, but she was certainly on the ball when it came to the animals.
You saved me a lot of back aches Maggie and I'm sorry I couldn't find you a church for Easter.

Sarah is a great girl and happy to get stuck into anything.
We had some gum trees to cut up and clear, piles of Lantana to burn, and holes to dig for plants. Not to mention buckets of Roo poo to pick up daily.
Sarah admitted to finding some of this hard work but handled it realy well and never complained.
I can definitely recommend Sarah.

Mallorie was a God sent. I had a small virus that left me with no energy at all. Once Mall knew the routine she just got stuck in and let me have the break I really needed.
She will have a go at anything, has lots of enthusiasm and was great with the Kangaroo's .

Glad I met these two, they are realy nice and very helpful. Always happy to take on any task and always enthusiastic.
They both cooked and the meals were great.
Unfortunately my solar system wasn't working very well, and we had to use the noisy generator a lot, and they didn't even complain about that!

Natacha stayed with me for about a week. Nice girl and worked well, but, "they don't make them like they used to"! Once the Roo's were fed and the bush work started she needed a break for a smoke, then at 12.20 couldn't work any longer without food. Apparently 1pm is too late for lunch. Amazing experience. Karen is a really nice person and you have the opportunity to get into close contact with the animals. The work is physically demanding but a lot of fun. Every day is different and the place is quiet and remote just in the middle of the bush. You also get a lot of free time.

Andrea is a realy great person, and very adult for her years. Learns fast, and happy to do any task. She works hard and is a pleasure to have around.

If you need someone that is dedicated, strong, disciplined and a gentleman, Calvin is your guy.
I enjoyed having Calvin around, and he also got along with the neighbours and their kids really well.
His Military service has set him up well to accepting hard work with no problem.

Josh is a really lovely young gentleman. Very intelligent and respectful. He hadn't done much manual labour and tried extremely hard and was surprised at what could be achieved. I know he will be a great lawyer and wish him well for the future.

I really enjoyed the time spent at Karens place. The work is not bad once your in the swing of things and is rewarding. I enjoyed the wildlife and having a nice beer afterwards in a pure water creek. I hope the rest of my trio in the OZ is just as enjoyable!

This was Aaron's first Workaway experience so he didn't know what to expect.
He settled in well and worked more hours than required because we were doing some dangerous hazard reduction burn offs that could not be left alone.
He is polite and his English is brilliant

Alberto is a great help and a really nice guy. He crawled under the house and wired it all in securely and created an outside area so my cats can't eat the wildlife!
He is very keen to learn new tasks and improve his English. Nothing bothers him (except leeches) and he goes above and beyond the call of duty.

It was an amazing experience in the wildlife of New South Wales. It was a great surrounding with a lot of rainforest and their typically animals. This is perfect for naturelovers and people who are not afraid to get dirty hands. At the moment it's unfortunately hardwork and not good for females.
