  Hello!
  We are Gustavo and Mercedes, 58 and 59 years old. We are both agricultural engineers. We have worked in various fields and lived in different parts of Uruguay. Since 2022, we have settled in Rocha, developing a regenerative livestock and self-sustaining production project. We have been together for 35 years, have four daughters (Florencia, Lucia, Sara, and Victoria) and two grandchildren (Simón and Matilda). Currently, only Sara is living with us, after returning from a few months as a Workaway volunteer. She is the one who inspired us to offer our project as hosts.
  
  Our farm is located about 10 km from the city of Rocha, 30 km from La Paloma Resort, about 50 km from José Ignacio, and 10 km from Laguna de Rocha, a beautiful Protected Area. It's a 50-hectare farm. We have a dairy cow and a calf, about 100 sheep, 50 of which are breeding ewes, 17 horses (10 of which are foals), 20 chickens, 1 lamb, 2 dogs (Lola and Pipa), and 1 cat (Salvador). Pets are part of the family, and we live very closely with them, so it's important to keep in mind that if you don't like sharing space with dogs and cats, this may not be a good destination for you.
  
  We have a greenhouse that is in need of repairs and a lot of help with the various tasks involved in vegetable production. This is where we have the most volunteer work throughout the year because there are so many different things to do, and you don't need much prior knowledge; it's easy to learn. It's a great way to acquire skills so you can produce your own food in the future. We've also begun planting various types of trees, and although it's still a fledgling business, there are several tasks that can be performed by volunteers without much experience.
  
  Maintenance and minor repairs to sheds and chicken coops, as well as the house's outdoor spaces, are tasks we do especially at the end of winter (September), and help is always very welcome. We have two fairly large lakes, with a beautiful recreational area that's very enjoyable but also requires a fair amount of maintenance, and we're always in need of help for that.
  
  For volunteers with experience working with horses, we have a roundabout that we recently built, and there are several tasks that could be done, but it's worth clarifying that these are not activities for beginners but rather for people who already know how to work. Working with sheep is quite seasonal; at times we would benefit from help, but some are tasks that require some knowledge. We have one dairy cow named Guardia, but for now it's just her, her daughter Mariposa, who hasn't yet come into production. Therefore, milking year-round isn't a year-round activity. On the other hand, it's not a task we propose to volunteers, but there are several tasks related to milking that they can do, and those who wish can experience milking if they come during the period when Guardia is in production.
  
  We do all the field and household chores ourselves; we don't have hired staff or domestic support, so, apart from the tasks we agree on as volunteer work, collaboration with household chores is necessary.
  
  As for our proposed tasks, since both our production project and our proposal as hosts are fairly new, most of the tasks and activities we are proposing to volunteers are related to the repair and maintenance of the infrastructure, food production in the greenhouse and surrounding areas, and some specific tasks with the animals, particularly the chickens and sheep.
  
  On the other hand, we have many ideas for things we plan to develop in the future, including some green construction with the intention of undertaking rural and nature tourism activities, and milking sheep and making cheese, but these are still unexplored areas, and for the moment we have nothing concrete to offer. However, we are open to proposals from volunteers interested in these areas or who have skills that are not included in the tasks we describe.
  
  Finally, so that those interested in our profile can have more information to analyze the option, we think it's important to clarify that while we do have horses, our proposal isn't focused on them, and, furthermore, horseback riding isn't part of the tasks we offer. We have quite a few pending tasks with the horses, both with the foals and the riding mares, but we don't propose these tasks to volunteers unless they have real experience. Another thing we think is important to emphasize, so you can better evaluate our option, is that we are in a relatively isolated location, despite being close to the city. For those who don't enjoy nature, silence, and tranquility, this may not be the best destination. Furthermore, this year we've had some changes in the family dynamics, and during the week, Mercedes is often the only one there, in charge of all the tasks that need to be done. In this context, we value more than ever the help we can receive from volunteers who are interested in our proposal, but we feel it's fair to say that we also have less time (and energy) available to organize recreational and leisure activities for volunteers. For those who appreciate nature, enjoy the outdoors, and are independent in developing recreational activities, our proposal may be a good option, but those who volunteer as a way to travel and explore, and value socializing and immersing themselves in the cultural scene of each place they visit, may feel somewhat frustrated here. We want people who decide to come here to do so because they appreciate, or are interested in, what we can offer.

  Somos Gustavo y Mercedes, tenemos 58 y 59 años, somos ingenieros agrónomos los dos, hemos trabajado en diversas cosas y vivido en diferentes lugares de Uruguay, y desde el 2022 estamos radicados en Rocha, desarrollando un proyecto de ganadería regenerativa y producción autosustentable. Estamos juntos hace 35 años, tenemos 4 hijas (Florencia, Lucia, Sara y Victoria) y 2 nietos (Simón y Matilda). Actualmente solo Sara está viviendo con nosotros, luego de regresar de unos meses como voluntaria Workaway y es ella la que nos ha entusiasmado a ofrecer nuestro proyecto como anfitriones.
  
  Nuestro campo está ubicado a unos 10 km de la ciudad de Rocha, a 30 km del Balneario La Paloma, a unos 50 km de José Ignacio y a 10 km de la Laguna de Rocha, un Área Protegida muy hermosa. Es un campo de 50 hectáreas, tenemos una vaca lechera y una ternera, unos 100 ovinos de los cuales 50 son ovejas de cría , 17 caballos (10 de los cuales son potros), 20 gallinas, 1 pata, 2 perras (Lola y Pipa) y 1 gato (Salvador). Las mascotas son parte de la familia y tenemos una convivencia muy estrecha con ellas, por lo que es importante que tengas en cuenta que si no te gusta compartir el espacio con perros y gatos, puede que este no sea un buen destino para ti.
  
  Tenemos un invernáculo que está precisando reparaciones y mucha ayuda para las tareas diversas tareas que implica la producción de hortalizas. Es donde más trabajo para voluntarios tenemos durante todo el año, porque son muchas y muy diversas las cosas que hay que hacer y no se necesita mucho conocimiento previo, se puede aprender fácilmente, y es una linda forma de adquirir destrezas para en el futuro poder producir los propios alimentos. También hemos empezado a plantar árboles de diverso tipo, y aunque es todavía un rubro incipiente hay varias tareas que pueden ser desarrolladas por voluntarios sin mucha experiencia.
  
  Las tareas de mantenimiento y pequeñas reparaciones de galpones y gallinero, así como los espacios exteriores de la casa son tareas que realizamos especialmente a la salida del invierno (septiembre) y la ayuda es siempre muy bienvenida. Tenemos dos lagos bastante grandes, con un espacio de recreación muy bonito que se disfruta mucho pero que también requiere bastante mantenimiento y siempre estamos necesitando manos para eso.
  
  Para los voluntarios que tengan experiencia en trabajar con caballos, tenemos un corral redondo que construimos recientemente y hay varias tareas que se podrían hacer pero vale aclarar que no son actividades para principiantes sino para personas que ya sepan trabajar. El trabajo con las ovejas es bastante estacional, en algunos momentos nos vendría bien tener ayuda pero algunas son tareas que requieren algo de conocimiento. Tenemos una vaca lechera que se llama Guardia, pero por ahora es solo ella, su hija Mariposa, aún no ha entrado en producción. Por lo tanto el año ordeñe no es una actividad de todo el año. Por otra parte, tampoco es una tarea que propongamos hacer a los voluntarios pero hay varias tareas conexas al ordeñe que sí pueden hacer, y los que lo deseen pueden vivir la experiencia de ordeñar, si vienen en el periodo en el que Guardia está en producción.
  
  Todas las tareas del campo y de la casa las hacemos nosotros, no tenemos personal contratado ni apoyo doméstico, por lo que, aparte de las tareas que acordemos como trabajo de voluntariado, la colaboración en las tareas de la casa es necesaria.
  
  En cuanto a la propuesta de tareas que tenemos, como tanto nuestro proyecto productivo como nuestra propuesta como anfitriones son bastante nuevos, la mayoría de las tareas y actividades que estamos proponiendo a los voluntarios están relacionadas a la reparación y mantenimiento de la infraestructura, a la producción de alimentos en el invernáculo y áreas anexas, y algunas tareas puntuales con los animales, en particular con las gallinas y las ovejas.
  
  Por otro lado, tenemos muchas ideas de cosas que pensamos desarrollar a futuro, entre ellas hacer algo de bioconstrucción con la intención de emprender actividades de turismo rural y de naturaleza y ordeñar ovejas y hacer quesos, pero son líneas aún inexploradas y por el momento no tenemos nada concreto que ofrecer. Sin embargo, estamos abiertos a escuchar propuestas de voluntarios interesados en estas cosas o que tengan habilidades que no están comprendidas en las tareas que describimos.
  
  Finalmente, a efectos de que los que se interesen en nuestro perfil puedan tener más elementos para analizar la opción, nos parece importante explicitar que si bien tenemos caballos, nuestra propuesta no está centrada en ellos, y, por otro lado, andar a caballo no forma parte de las tareas que ofrecemos. Tenemos bastantes tareas pendientes con los caballos, tanto con los potros como con las yeguas de andar, pero no son tareas que propongamos a los voluntarios, salvo que tengan realmente experiencia. Otra cosa que pensamos que es importante remarcar, para que puedan valorar mejor nuestra opción, es que estamos en un lugar relativamente solitario, a pesar de que está cerca de la ciudad. Para quienes no disfruten de la naturaleza, el silencio y la tranquilidad, puede que este no sea el mejor destino. Además, este año tuvimos algunos cambios en la dinámica familiar y durante la semana muchas veces solo está Mercedes, a cargo de todas las tareas que hay que hacer. En este marco, más que nunca valoramos la ayuda que nos puedan dar los voluntarios que se interesan por nuestra propuesta, pero nos parece honesto decir también que tenemos menos disponibilidad de tiempo (y energía) para organizar actividades recreativas y de ocio para los voluntarios. Para quienes aprecian la naturaleza, disfrutan del aire libre y son autónomos para desarrollar actividades recreativas, nuestra propuesta puede ser una buena opción, pero quienes hacen voluntariado como una forma de viajar y conocer, y valoran socializar y meterse en la movida cultural de cada lugar que visitan, quizás aquí se puedan sentir algo frustrados. Nos interesa que las personas que deciden venir lo hagan porque aprecian, o están interesados, en lo que nosotros podemos ofrecer.

  The reason that led us to embark on this project is the desire to put into practice and share our conviction that a change is needed in the dominant way of living, to rescue and value the way we relate to nature and food production. This project aims to create a space in which our daughters and their friends, our grandchildren and their friends, our friends and neighbors, and now through this space other people we do not know today, have the opportunity to live the experience of reconnecting with nature and food production. On the other hand, both my husband and I were university professors and researchers for many years, which makes us really enjoy the educational task and the exchange of knowledge at all levels. We are also part of several producer organizations in the area, and I am part of a women's organization that works in regeneration, which is another space in which volunteers can participate and meet other people and experiences. In parallel and until now as a hobby, I draw and paint, I have a small workshop and I could share my knowledge if it were of interest to you. We also really enjoy cooking and preparing delicious meals. We are starting to make cheeses, we make yogurt, we also make fermented drinks, sourdough breads, among other things, which if you are interested you could learn (or teach us if you know more than us!) and we would love to know and share typical dishes from other places. Finally, we are close to the city and to spas so there you will also have the opportunity to learn and explore according to your own interests.

  El motivo que nos llevó a embarcarnos en este proyecto es el deseo de poner en práctica y compartir nuestra convicción de que se necesita un cambio en la forma dominante de habitar, de rescatar y valorizar la manera de relacionarnos con la naturaleza y con la producción de alimentos. Este proyecto apunta a generar un espacio en el que nuestras hijas y sus amigos, nuestros nietos y sus amigos, nuestros amigos y vecinos, y ahora través de este especio otras personas que hoy no conocemos, tengan la oportunidad de vivir la experiencia de reconectar con la naturaleza y con la producción de alimentos. Por otro lado, tanto mi esposo como yo fuimos profesores e investigadores universitarios durante muchos años, lo que hace que disfrutemos mucho la tarea educativa y el intercambio de conocimientos a todo nivel. También somos parte de varias organizaciones de productores de la zona, y soy parte de una organización de mujeres que trabajamos en regeneración, que son otro espacio en el que los voluntarios podrán participar y conocer otras personas y experiencias. En forma paralela y hasta ahora como un hobby dibujo y pinto, tengo un pequeño taller y podría compartir mis saberes si es que fuera de tu interés. También disfrutamos mucho cocinar y preparar comidas ricas, estamos empezando a elaborar quesos, hacemos yogurt, hacemos también bebidas fermentadas, panes de masas madre, entre otras cosas, lo que si te interesa podrías aprender (¡o enseñarnos si sabes más que nosotros!) y nos gustaría mucho conocer y compartir platos típicos de otros lugares. Finalmente, estamos cerca de la ciudad y de balnearios por lo que también ahí tendrás oportunidad de conocer y explorar según tus propios intereses.

  *Repair and painting tasks for the exterior infrastructure (deck, wooden chairs, etc.)
  *If you like it, are interested and know how, there are various tasks to do with horses, from brushing and pampering them, to riding them or working with them in the round pen.
  *Simple tasks with the sheep such as helping to move the plots, going around to see how everything is, etc.

  These are some of the tasks in which it would be good to have help, especially in the first 3 tasks that we describe. However, we are open to volunteers who can help with any of these tasks. We don't expect you to do all of them, just the ones you feel most comfortable with, and if your interests don't fall within the tasks we describe, we are open to hearing suggestions.

  *Tenemos un invernáculo que está precisando reparaciones en su infraestructura y también tareas de desmalezado, trasplante, cosecha, etc.
  *Tareas de reparación y pintura de la infraestructura exterior (deck, sillones de madera, etc.)
  *Si te gusta, tenes interés y sabes hay diversas tareas para realizar con caballos, desde cepillarlos y mimarlos, hasta montarlos o trabajar con ellos en el corral redondo.
  *Tareas sencillas con las ovejas como ayudar a mover las parcelas, recorrer para ver cómo está todo, etc.
  *Tareas diarias con las gallinas y los patos: alimentarlos, juntar los huevos, ponerles agua, etc.

  Esta son algunas de las tareas en las que nos vendría bien tener ayuda, especialmente en las primeras 3 tareas que describimos. No obstante, estamos dispuesto a recibir voluntarios que brinden ayuda en cualquiera de estas tareas. No esperamos que tengas que realizar todas sino aquellas en la o las que te sientas más cómodo/a y si tus intereses no están comprendidos en las tareas que describimos, estamos abiertos a escuchar propuestas.

  The house is spacious, the volunteer will have his/her own room with access to one of the bathrooms (semi-shared) and will be able to freely use the other areas of the house. In exchange for their work we will provide the 4 meals of the day (breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner). The type of food varies according to the time and day, being mostly a diet based on dairy products, eggs, vegetables, flour and meat. If your eating style differs from this our house would not be a place for you, although if you are interested in the rest of our proposal and are willing to buy and prepare your own food you will be welcome. Meal times are quite flexible, depending on the tasks and the time of year. If you want to share the table with us you can do so, but if you want to eat on your own we have no problem.

  La casa es amplia, el voluntario tendrá una habitación propia con acceso a uno de los baños (semicompartido) y podrá dar uso libre de las otras áreas de la casa.
  A cambio de su trabajo proporcionaremos las 4 comidas del día (desayuno, almuerzo, merienda y cena). El tipo de comida varía según la época y el día, siendo mayoritariamente una dieta en base a lácteos, huevos, verduras, harinas y carne. Si tu estilo de alimentación difiere de esto nuestra casa no sería un lugar cómo para ti, aunque si de todos modos te interesa el resto de nuestra propuesta y estás dispuesto a comprar y elaborar tu comida serás bienvenido/a. Los horarios de comida son bastante flexibles, dependiendo de las tareas y del momento del año. Si quieres compartir con nosotros la mesa lo puedes hacer, pero si deseas comer por tu lado no tenemos inconveniente.

  Although we are relatively close to the city (13 km) there is no public transportation from the house. The journey is about 3 km of dirt road to a paved road that leads to the city of Rocha. We have a bicycle that we could lend, and since we go to the center almost every day (especially Sara who studies and works there) you will have that option to get to the city either to do some shopping, walk around or take the bus to go to the places you want to see.

  Si bien estamos relativamente cerca de la cuidad (a 13 km) no hay transporte público desde la casa. El trayecto son unos 3 km de camino de tierra hasta un camino asfaltado que llega hasta la ciudad de Rocha. Tenemos una bicicleta que podríamos prestar, y como vamos casi todos los días hasta el centro (en especial Sara que estudia y trabaja allí) tendrás esa opción para llegar a la ciudad ya sea para hacer alguna compra, pasear o tomar ómnibus para ir a los lugares que quieras conocer.

  Estamos en una zona en la que hay cortes de electricidad con bastante frecuencia, a veces con aviso, pero otras no, y la señal si bien en general es buena, puede haber días de tormenta u otras causas en las que anda peor. No obstante, Gustavo hace gran parte de su trabajo como consultor de manera virtual y Sara estudia también con una buena parte que es virtual.

  Espace pour garer des vans

  El espacio para autocaravanas es amplio y variado. Desde zonas más alejadas de la casa, como el espacio de los lagos o la costa con monte nativo (en estos lugares no hay baño), o cerca de la casa donde hay posibilidad de acceder a un baño desde afuera.
