Descripción
I will retire in January after spending about 30 years as a lecturer and researcher at the professional University Van Hall Larenstein in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. To celebrate this great escape, I’m planning a trip through Western Canada and Alaska from May until November. I hope to meet interesting people, marvel at northern nature, and contribute as a volunteer to projects that are meaningful, unusual, or simply fun.
I’m a 66-year-old biologist (Animal Behavior) who somehow took a philosophical detour and ended up with a PhD in philosophy. Don’t worry: I don’t start metaphysical debates unless someone insists. I’m in good health, take no medication, and I work out three times a week—so yes, I can lift things, carry things, and occasionally even function before coffee.
I’m calm, practical, reliable, creative, and enjoy work where people, nature, humour, and a bit of honest sweat come together.
My life has been pleasantly varied:
• I supported physically disabled people on holiday and learned the true meaning of joy.
• I drove a city bus in Utrecht, mastering narrow medieval streets and the art of staying calm while humans behave unpredictably.
• I guided nature tours for SNP Nature Travels, bravely calling rain “refreshing” with a straight face.
These days I love cooking more than ever, write prose and essays, and keep feeding my curiosity wherever I go.
I’m looking for friendly places where I can offer hands-on help, a steady temperament, and fitness earned through workouts rather than youthful recklessness. Whether it’s outdoor labour, eco-projects, DIY building, gardening, farming, cooking (including the experimental kind), computer help, or supporting remote and quiet places—I’m happy to pitch in.
I like environments that are down-to-earth and welcoming, where curiosity, kindness, and a good laugh are considered basic human needs. And where a 66-year-old creature is seen as useful, not mysterious.
