Forever curious about this beautiful Planet Earth/Ocean of ours, while my tempo and tongue are Caribbean, I am a multilingual, multicultural citizen (European mother, Caribbean father).

Am 'allergic' to (plastic) pollution, fastfood, driving in traffic. Am in love with the Ocean (all things aquatic), smiling, my dog, fresh air, the natural world, good food, meaningful conversation and connections (human and other animals), sunrises & sets. Active & Independent. I am happiest by, in, on or near the water. I believe in purposeful and simple living, slow food, the kindness of strangers, and stopping to smell the flowers.

A full-time marine conservationist by profession, in recent years I have transitioned to being an independent consultant to pursue other interests and a more nomadic lifestyle.

At this point, I have decided it is time to move my base from Jamaica (where I grew up) to Europe. My parents live in Rome, Italy. I do not have siblings, and now feel that I need to and want to live closer to them. Life is short, and the time I have with them is limited. I am investigating the Algarve in Portugal and think that a number of Workaway experiences will serve as a good ‘test run’ as I want to possibly set up a small agrotourism and ecosystem restoration business/project focused on land/water restoration and stewardship, but also cultural exchanges, experiencing traditional food, etc. I shy away from using catch phrases but something along the lines of ‘purposeful travel’. As I worked in the marine conservation and fisheries field for many years, my dream would be to marry that experience with my love for the ocean, being outdoors, traveling, paddling, genuine food/people/intercultural exchanges and connections.

*️️Project management.
*️️ Have 15 plus years experience working within the NGO environment.
*️️ Good with my hands if I’m shown what to do or given instructions.
*️️ Good at (interior and exterior) decoration.
*️️ Guest management, hospitality - I ran my own AirBnB for 2+ years.
*️️ Watersports skills - certified scuba and free diver; am an experienced stand-up paddle boarder and also surf,

What can we say about Nathalie? She left a mark on all of us (humans and dogs). It was not necessary to teach her anything, she knew immediately what had to be done, she committed 100% to our dogs and also collaborated a lot in the management of our times, in addition she was a totally positive person for the group, always contributing with her… read more

Il mio soggiorno nel rifugio e nella casa di Franco e Nelly e stato molto speciale. Ho trovato una famiglia siciliana - umana e a quattro zampe! Il lavoro e molto gratificante, e anche fisico quindi devi essere pronta a sporcarti e a fare un sforzo (ma mai eccessivo). I cani sono di una gentilezza ed una bonta quasi miracolose, visto le esperienze… read more sofferte prima di arrivare al rifugio. Nelly e Franco fanno un lavoro incredibilmente importante e difficile con molti sacrifici. Percio hanno veramente bisogno del aiuto che i volontari di Workaway possano fornire. Quindi per favore, sii operosa, prendi l'iniziativa, assicura che i cani hanno sempre l'acqua e cibo e anche il canile puliti, aiuta con le faccende domestiche (lavare i piatti, pulire il bagno, la cucina, etc., i pasti). Nelly, Franco, Rosario, Julian e Estefania mi hanno accolto a braccia aperte, come si dice in inglese, e hanno fatto di tutto per per farmi sentire a mio agio e a casa. Credo che il gruppo (Nelly, Franco, Rosario e i volontari) ha avuto una esperienza molto speciale perche andavamo molto d'accordo e ci siamo divertiti al lavoro e a casa.
Mi mancate tutti quanti - umani e 4 zampe!! Mille, mille grazie per 2 settimane che non dimenticherò mai. Spero di rivedervi presto!!

My workaway experience at the shelter and at Nelly's and Franco's house was very special. I have found a Sicilian family - both human and four legged! The work is incredibly rewarding and gratifying, and also physical, so be ready to get dirty and put in some elbow grease and physical effort, but never more than you are capable of. Given the awful experiences many of the dogs have suffered before arriving at the shelter, they are of a kindness and gentleness which is astounding. Nelly and Franco have taken on work and a labour of love and commitment which is incredibly important and extremely difficult, requiring many sacrifices. The help from Workaway volunteers is essential to them and the animals. So please put your very best foot forward and be prepared to work hard but always fairly. Do your best, take initiative by noticing whether other tasks need to be done, make sure the kennels are clean and that the dogs always have fresh water and food, help with the housework (keeping the kitchen and bathroom and other communal areas clean, washing dishes, cooking meals, etc) . Nelly and Franco welcomed me into their house with open arms, and they as well as Rosario, Julian and Estefania went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and at home. It was a unique moment for the group (Nelly, Franco, Rosario and the volunteers) because we all got along very well, and really genuinely enjoyed one another's company. We had fun while working and also at home.
I miss everyone - humans and four legged creatures, and hope to visit again soon!!

Nathalie was a delight to host. She has a gift for noticing unmet needs, and filling them. She's hard working, communicative, respectful, and very clean and organized. She also has an incredible gift with animals, and our dog is happier and healthier than ever after two weeks with Nathalie! We're looking forward to her return!
