Hey! We’re Mónica (24yo) and Guigz (25yo), two best friends from Lisbon, Portugal (our mothers were best friends too, so we decided to continue their legacy) and we’re really excited to keep exploring, learning, and connecting through Workaway.

We’ve just finished an incredible 4-month Workaway in rural Italy, where we helped at a family-run countryside hotel. It was a truly rich and full experience: we served meals, did gardening and babysitting, helped with cleaning and general upkeep, and even led cooking and art classes for children. We basically stepped in wherever we were needed and loved every second of it.

While we were there, we completely immersed ourselves in the culture and language. We were part of a team of around 15 people, most of whom only spoke Italian, so we really had to make an effort to communicate. And it was so worth it, not just for the language skills we gained, but for everything the language opened up for us: we were able to connect with amazing people and truly feel part of a team. We now have a solid understanding of Italian (it’s something we’re really proud of). That whole experience left us with even more excitement to keep doing this.

A little bit about us: we’re friendly, grounded, hardworking, and always curious. We’re both very hands-on, whether it’s creative tasks, caring for children or animals, being in nature, or simply helping with daily routines. We love meaningful conversations, being surrounded by nature, playing music, making things, and sharing laughs along the way.

What matters most to us is feeling useful, learning from people, and creating a real sense of connection wherever we go. If you think we might be a good fit for your project, we’d absolutely love to hear from you.

We’ve always loved languages, not just learning them, but using them to really connect with people. We’re native Portuguese speakers, fluent in English, and always curious to pick up more. When we were in Italy, most of the team didn’t speak English, so we naturally started picking up Italian just by being there, listening, talking, messing up, and trying again. It wasn’t something we forced, it just came from wanting to be part of the group and communicate with the people around us. That’s really it: if we’re interested in people, we’re interested in their language.

We both have strong backgrounds in hospitality and customer service, but our experiences go far beyond that. Over the years, we’ve worked in restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, hotels, gardens, homes, schools and most recently, we spent four months on a Workaway in rural Italy where we were invited to step into completely new roles. That experience showed us how capable we are when we say yes to something unfamiliar. We discovered skills we didn’t know we had, and grew in ways we didn’t expect. It also reminded us how much we love being part of a team that works with joy and intention.

    Mónica:
I've been working in hospitality since I was 19 years old. I started at a beach club as a waitress, then worked as a barmaid, barista, and eventually as a team leader. These roles gave me strong customer service, multitasking, and problem-solving skills. I learned to work efficiently under pressure, handle transactions, and manage customer interactions. As a team leader, I developed leadership, delegation, and conflict resolution abilities, guiding my team and improving operations.
My degree in psychology gave me a deep understanding of emotions, boundaries, empathy, and the subtleties of group dynamics.
In my free time I paint, create collages with vintage paper, try to write some poetry, always with a camera and I tend to bring creativity into everything.

    Guigz:
I have a background in both hospitality and retail industries. My first job was as a waitress in my mother's restaurant, where I worked for about three years. When I got into college, I got a job at a supermarket as a cashier. In the meantime, I temporarily dropped out of college (I was pursuing an Arts and Humanities degree) and started making jewelry at home. Eventually, I got a job at a jewelry shop where we provide personalized pieces as per the client's desires. With all of these experiences, especially the last one, I've developed strong communication skills, as well as customer service, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. At the restaurant, I gained experience in fast-paced environments, handling tasks like food preparation, cleaning, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for customers. In retail, I learned to be more patient, organized, and most importantly for me, I learned to enjoy communicating with people from all over the world, as I was a bit shy before that job. I also learned to manage inventory and provide excellent customer care.
These experiences have taught me how to work efficiently, communicate effectively, and adapt to new situations with ease.

We’re both comfortable with general housework, cooking, gardening, cleaning, childcare, and running day-to-day operations in a home or guest space. We’re great with kids (patient, imaginative, caring) and we also bring digital skills like photography, content creation, writing, and social media management. We love working with our hands just as much as our minds, and we’re always ready to jump into something new, especially when there’s room for creativity and human connection.

What makes us a strong pair is our mix of reliability, softness, and initiative. We don’t wait to be asked, we notice what’s needed, and we get it done. We’re quick learners, emotionally aware, and genuinely motivated by doing things with care and intention. We’re also not afraid to get our hands dirty, to laugh at ourselves, or to ask for help when we need it.

  • Algo más...

We grew up together, literally. Our mums have worked side by side in the same restaurant since we were born, and our lives have always been deeply connected. Saying we’re “best friends” doesn’t quite cover it, we’re more like sisters (not in the cheesy way, just in the real, unspoken kind of way). We’ve shared everything from family dinners to messy houses and weekend sleepovers without ever needing an invitation.

This lifelong closeness means we work well as a team, we’re solid, communicative, and comfortable around each other in any situation. We’ve travelled and worked together before, and we know how to bring balance: we’re very different in personality, but share strong values, a grounded work ethic, and a deep sense of respect and presence. We’ve learned that our connection isn’t something that gets tested by adventure, actually it’s something that carries us through.

In our free time, we love being outdoors, going for long walks, swimming in the sea, dancing, cooking, and moving our bodies. We’re creative souls: we paint, sew, make jewelry, write, and get excited about any hands-on project. We’re also sporty and love trying new activities that challenge and ground us, both physically and mentally.

We’re equally passionate about animals, children, food, culture, and finding moments of joy in the simple things. We’re open-minded, proactive, calm under pressure, and we value genuine human connection above all.

More than anything, we’re ready, ready to show up fully, support wherever we can, and contribute to a meaningful experience that leaves everyone better for it.
