Live in a very practical and crowded country called Singapore so once a year I try to travel and see the world for the amazing place it is ! Along the journey I've met beautiful people in too many countries to count and I love photographing and sketching what I see.

Too many amazing memories from Morocco, Tasmania, India, Rome, Alaska etc but still more than half the world to go!

Thomas and Gabby are also great and Elise is wonderful. There’s 4 people so it depends who you have a connection with as they are all great and unique.

The host - Elise is the host and she's amazing at English which is great because my French is bad. She's easy going and don't micro manage so it's easy to work for her. You never feel like you're stupid or bad at chores and you have creative freedom to carry out the chores. We didn't talk so much because I came at a time where other art residents were there, Tara and Emma and many conversations are in group settings. But I treasure the conversations we had and wish we had more time together.

The work - The family trusted me to be alone for a week. I was tasked to take care of the house and water and being the sole steward in the house was wonderful . Other fun and rewarding jobs included moving firewood with the whole family. Stacking firewood by myself, cutting some beams, mopping and plastering a wall that's over 100 years old. Gardening which I'm good at and cleaning windows. Usually I'll start at 9 and then 1230 David will say I've worked too hard and get ready for lunch haha. And if I feel like I didn't do enough then after lunch I'll just work for an hour more.

The food - Elise cooks really well. I cook from time to time too for everyone. Makn cook is David and he does great Italian dishes like cold and hot soups.

The location - Châteauneuf-sur-Charente could very well be the best France has to offer and elevates this Workaway from being just great to simply OUTSTANDING. Google "Dordogne game" .. it's a watercolor game that shows you what it feels like in summer . The river is in my top three together with Everest and Hoh rainforest . And add to that the fascinating architecture surrounding the house. And the cherry that tops the cake is the ancient mansion you'll be living in. Absolutely gorgeous from the wallpaper to the windows to the tiles to the 64 year old vine to the slime trails.

Accommodations - I've my own internet but I think internet can be spotty so not for remote workers probably. But with such and interesting town and nature and family you absolutely don't need it. I had a big room and own toilet. It was great. Shower had hot water and really strong satisfying spray. My room connects with the other house and if you're great friends with the other house people as I later became it's even possible to leave the connecting door open. It's a huge house and endless possibilities.

I'm a positive and happy person so it's not easy to leave a bad review so this review ( spoiler alert ) is an amazing and honest review of a wonderful gem of a place located in an authentic French countryside. I've been in France for maybe soon to be two months and had many experiences but this Workaway experience with Caroline is life changing … read more and will be among my treasured memories here in France.

First off the host... Caroline is a great communicator who replies daily so that's a huge plus in planning. Also I felt really welcome and reassured the instance we met. She is a positive person and really easy going. As gen z people will say it, she living in 2050. In normal language it means she is a visionary and innovator. For example a typical host wants to know what the volunteer can do and what skills he has. But Caroline is wanting to find out what the volunteer wants to do and to empower them to do that. So the roles are somewhat reversed. She believes in the beauty of co existence and learning from nature. A life not about money but about something deeper…. maybe flowers or tea

The work … for me personally I felt I did not have to work a single hour a single day I was there. What the volunteer is invited to do is to join her in her daily activities. It could be foraging or walking her dogs near some pristine lakes. If you’re tired or feel like doing nothing you can just tell her and you get the day/afternoon off. Personally there’s too much fun stuff to do I didn’t use that option at all. So three things I did while I was there was making a mini watercolor/fire art exhibition of sorts, paint/wrap the trees with natural paint/fabrics for an event, and making a nice bamboo structure for drying the indigo leaves. If you’re into fashion or fabrics, this gotta be the best Workaway as you’ll learn a lot about dyeing and indigo and fabrics. I’ve spent hours ( > 50 ) searching for creative Workaways and shortlisting them so basically it felt like I was in an art residency not a Workaway which is amazing !

The food … food was really good. I love to cook and it’s a huge delight to cook in her house. There a huge variety of different fresh/dried/preserved herbs/vegetables/meats that you can broil, roast, poach, baste and most importantly leave raw. Caroline forages a lot so I’ve learnt to use a lot of raw vegetables and herbs and flowers in the foods I prepare and to leave them raw. It’s like sushi but for the vegetables. So my cooking philosophy has changed. Also if you’re a tea lover, this place gotta be the number 1 Workaway for you.

Location… it’s a nice place with lots of stone building and vineyards. Nice cake and ice cream shops nearby. Is good and French. About an hour away I went to some lake with amazing blue waters and some white clay banks that you can have a mud bath. Was one of my highlights of my trip. Also an hour away is Bordeaux which is my favourite city so far.

Accommodations… there’s two mid sized dogs Oita and Aimee, and two cats. If you like animals you’ll love them. House is amazing. I love exploring abandoned houses so this feels like what it you had an artist living in one. It’s a beautiful balance of soul and art and creativity and not overly manicured. The floors have great textures and undulating experiences. Caroline has guests who are always so polite and will try to speak to you in English. She does not prefer to have more than one volunteer at a time but I was so happy to meet this Austrian girl who was hilarious and sure a pure and genuine soul. I saw fireworks, ate off handcrafted ceramics and surrounded but art and animal fur all in this wonderful space. And she has another amazing garden where she grows indigo and a huge shed. Those are like the Wild West, it’s full of opportunities for you to develop and leave your mark.

If you’ve read this far just apply and don’t hesitate. If you’re lucky enough you will get chosen and to Caroline a HUGE thank you.

Oh wow, staying with Philippe makes me wish I could leave one 6 star review a year! Let me explain why..

1. The host - Philipe 7/5. He is a kind and warm and really funny guy. Also incredibly generous. If we go shopping in the supermarket and I want to buy items, he be like “ no you are Workaway you don't spend money. “ He will also say buy what … read more you want I will pay. He is always finding different ways to be the best host possible. Like if friends come who speak French he or his friend Cedrick will always translate what is happening or he will look for special French ice cream or cakes as a special treat. . Weekdays he bring me cycling to the city. And weekends he offer to drive me to the beach or to stay in his other apartment in different city.

2. The work - 5/5
Basic home maintenance and upkeep. Sweeping, painting, washing, weeding, strawberry harvesting and mopping. Making a large mural was my main and really rewarding job! Plus if Phillipe feels you are working too much he will think of way to reward you like bringing you to somewhere very French or play some games for a nice work life balance . I'm a board game enthusiast but he has maybe 40 different games that even I've not seen before. He empowers you as a worker and gives great instructions so after 10 mins I know how to run the place, recycle, dishwashing , washing machine and I know the schedule.

3. The food - 7/5. Some Workaways I'll buy my own treats and snacks just because I have huge appetite and I don’t expect the host to give me that much food but if you last Workaway has not been feeding you, this is the BEST place to be in. I've eaten more cheese and cake here this month than the last 10 years. There is so much food I literally have to say stop. Plus it's delicious also.

4. Location. 5/5 - it's a nice chill place. Quiet but pretty architectural and super cycling friendly. There is cycling paths and drivers actually stop for pedestrians and cyclists which is mind blowing for me. You can cycle to the horse paths and parks or the town or even the beach if you're a hard core cyclist. Intersting architecture everywhere. At least 10 types of chimneys in a 100m radius. I absolutely loved the oil paintings in the museum I walked to. It's an hour walk but nice views. Best 9 euros I’ve ever spent in my life. If you love art the museum is a must see along with the huge chateau.

5- Accommodations 5/5. I’ll say it’s better than half the hotels in south east Asia. It’s good and place is always so clean. Huge toilet for nice hot showers. Views is normal but wifi is great.
