Traveling seems to be a genetic trait in my family – or at least for the women in the family, and passed down through the generations.

I was born in Africa to Canadian parents, and have been ‘nomading’ for years.
In 1988, after my marriage ended, I told my mother that I would take a 6-month round-the-world trip before I return to Canada and try to settle down into ‘normal’. Well … normal never fit for me.

It did take me years to finally accept that I am not ‘normal’, and I am okay with that. It has been such a great joy to meet and make friends with others who are not ‘normal’ either.

It has been nearly 40 years of traveling, living, and working around the world. One of the greatest lessons I learned from these years in different countries and different cultures is that there is no Right or Wrong. There is only Different. This outlook helps me to keep an open-mind when I arrive or live in a different culture. And one of the greatest joys of this life-style is learning about others and their cultures.

For me, one of the greatest joys gained from this life-style is that I am always learning and growing. I consider myself to be a very open-minded person, willing to learn new skills, and open to new opportunities to learn. Others have told me that they find my enthusiasm, open-hearted nature, and hard-working attitude a pleasure to be with.

I love teaching. In sharing with my mom how much I loved my first teaching position in Japan, she commented that ‘you have always been a teacher’. I love to see the light in a student’s eyes when they are able to communicate in their new language. When they can see how their English skills are improving. English is now the international language for business, travel, and connecting with others. Speaking English opens the doors to opportunities. For me, a good teacher is someone who is always looking for new ways to improve their teaching skill. I have been teaching English for over 10 years, and I am still eager to learn how to improve my skills. I have taught from beginner to advanced levels, from children (even 3-year olds) to senior citizens. After so many years of teaching, I have a wide range of teaching materials that I use and can bring with me. Having lived in Latin America for over 20 years, sadly I would say that my Spanish level is really only conversational level. But, fortunately, I love meeting new people, and using my Spanish no matter if the grammar is correct or not. Being an English teacher for so many years, I spent most of my time speaking English rather than Spanish. But Spanish is my 5th language, and actually my favorite language. For me, it has a flavor on my tongue. I would love an opportunity to improve my Spanish skills.

Over the years of traveling, living, and working in so many different countries, I have developed a very full and wide variety of skills as well as experiences. I like to joke that I have a very full ‘tool chest’ of skills.

Being a Virgo, I am a naturally very well-organized person. Have you heard the joke – if you want something done well, give it to a Virgo. We are rather famous for our organizational and management skills. And I have used these natural skills in a variety of experiences.

Trying to be as brief and succinct as possible …
My list of experiences range from
    Office Manager
    Project Management
    Restructuring and Redesigning Office Systems
    Volunteer/Trainer at Suicide Prevention Center
English teacher in Japan – rated as one of their top 1% teachers
Director of Hiring and Training New Teachers
Entrepeneur – managed a Tourist Information Center, developed (from scratch) a yearly Tourist Guide Book, developed and managed (from scratch) a Resort Center for retreats, family reunions, and destination weddings.
    Leader of regular Sisters’ Gatherings
    Online English teacher

    Also certified as a
    Holistic Life Coach
    Sister’s Circle Facilitator

As I am a new member in WorkAway, I don’t have any Reviews from placements yet. But, given my age and travel/work experiences, I will say that my skills sets do bring a lot to the table – wherever and whatever I am involved in.

I have been a volunteer since I was 14 years old. Giving to others fully and whole-heartedly brings joy to the project, and just as much to myself.

Of the many important things that I have learned is that any project requires flexibility to take on whatever task(s) may need doing, willingness to step up and do whatever is needed, openness to learning new skills, and courage to step out of my comfort zone and try new things.

I feel that I have a wide range of practical skills, as well as personal skills gained from my travels, living overseas, and working in different cultures.

Being part of a team, no matter what size of team, means learning about the tasks and responsibilities needed for each project. Being willing to take the time to learn what is required, and asking for clarity or direction if unclear on the task(s). Or taking the initiative, and stepping up when noticing something needs doing. Sometimes it just means showing up and keeping at it until the job, task, or project gets done.

Even more important is a cheerful and enthusiastic approach to life itself, as well as specific tasks and responsibilities.

I prefer to eat fish and chicken, and don't eat red meats. I especially love to eat fresh fruits and veggies.
