Hello!
My name is Frederico. I am an adventurous, social and easygoing person=)
I studied biology and I currently work as a nature conservation technician in WWF Portugal.

Despite having lived in a city for most of my life, I always had a deep connection with nature. And after several years of living in smaller towns with lots of contact with the countryside, I know that I am really passionate about and prefer the rural life=)

Considering travelling previous to workaway, I've had some enriching experiences:
Between my studies, I worked/volunteered with a multicultural team studying birds behavior in Cordoba, Spain. We did a lot of fieldwork, form fixing nest boxes, catching and ringing birds to tree climbing to place cameras near bird nests.
I traveled to the Madeira archipelago during my Masters fieldwork and studied a seabird population in the remote Desertas Islands. During a month and a half I was part of a great team of rangers, researchers and volunteers, and I learned a lot from them.

I've already traveled through workaway to Norway and Slovenia. Both these experiences, although different, we very enriching to me. I've met people I will not forget, and learned new skills and knowledge that I still use today. I want to continue travelling with workaway because for me it´s a unique opportunity to keep discovering myself in new scenarios and situations, get to know different cultures, share my life experiences with other people and learn new skills and ways of living.

I particularly want to know how to survive in the countryside and grow my own food and take care of the land=) I intend to do this in a mutual way, by giving my happy disposition and energy to help people develop their projects and at the same time staying with them being part of their lives for some weeks, having at least some meals and conversations together and learning the most out of the experience.

Last year I have applied for an International Experience Canada (IEC), and it is to Canada I want to travel in 2026. My IEC has been accepted, and I want workaway to be part of the experience, either for around 2 weeks, before I do a working summer season (if I can get a seasonal job), or around 3 weeks (in case I don't do the summer season and decide to do the workaway during my holidays).

As a ranger, I do various activities from fire watching to species surveying and environmental education with children, so I consider myself a flexible and adaptable person.

I am always curious and eager to learn, and I try to help out in every task that I can! I fit well in a team but I'm also ok with working independently.

I live alone so I can cook for myself and for others, clean the house, wash clothes, etc.

I have volunteered in Lisbon's Zoo and other wildlife reserves, so I´m happy to care for animals and I pay attention to their overall health and their needs.

I have no problem in working in the field, and I enjoy getting my hands in the dirt, either digging, weeding or helping out in building tasks.

I am developing a particular interest in sustainable ways of farming (like the use of permaculture principles). To be honest, I still have very little experience in agriculture, but helping my grandmother with her garden, when I was a kid, and weeding, planting crops like tomatoes and sowing broad beans in one of my work colleagues´s organic garden, I think I have some notions about most typical crops, soil health and what a plant normally needs to grow. But this is a hole new world for me to explore!

I like to work outdoors and I have a reasonable level of fitness to do physical work (like chopping and carrying wood, help in construction/building activities, etc.)

Being with Uni and Torgeir and their family was an unforgettable experience=)

At first it took me a few days to get used to the late autumn cold in Norway and living at roughly 600 m high, I got a bit tired at the end of my first days, but then I started to feel accustomed to the climate and to the relaxed, thoughtful, and simple way of living… read more Torgeir and Uni. I felt welcomed from the beginning and I was very fortunate to have a workaway mate, Richard, who showed me around and taught me so much! We became close companions=)

Work on the farm was varied and I never felt I was asked to work longer than expected. I am grateful for Torgeir’s awareness of when we needed a break sometimes, in more physical tasks such as reinforcing fences or putting tiles on the garage roof. Me, Torgeir and Richard made a great team! I will miss our relaxing moments of chat in the forest, after some fieldwork=)

I want to stress that in terms of accommodation and other living conditions, I feel like what Torgeir and Uni state in their workaway profile corresponds to what you can expect in your stay on their farmI greatly enjoyed our conversations with Uni after meals,she was always eager to talk to me and I learned so much with her, from nutrition,human psychology, and making natural deodorant recipe=) I miss the evenings when Kai went to meet us at the cabin, and we played board games, played the guitar and chatted and laughed a lot! I hope he learned something from me because I have learned quite a lot with him. It was great that as days went by, Ørjan was getting used tomy presence and I got a chance to play with him=)
Torgeir’s parents, Ingrid and Stein, were very helpful and welcoming to us. Ingrid was always so nice to me and she enjoyed learning a bit about portuguese culture.

Inspired by Uni and Torgeir’s way of living, I started making changes in my daily life, namely eating more organ meats and other parts of animals, soaking foods like oats and nuts before eating, and I started usingless synthetic/fragrant products on my body. Another interesting detail I noticed was that for almost 3 weeks, I only had a small bag of litter with few plastic packages, one thing I could not have done at home. This is of course related to Torgeir and Uni’s way of living, as much as possible close to nature and without wasting almost nothing.

Near the end of my staying, I truly felt I was starting to become part of the family. It was sad I had to leave you so soon, which in turn leaves room for coming back and catching up with you guys in spring or summer,something I really plan to do!Thanks you for everything you taught me and I wish you all the best=)
