Hey! Nice to meet you!

I'm Estrella! I was born and raised in La Palma, an island in the Atlantic that is a part of the Canary Islands archipelago. Many people from different backgrounds wound up here, so this meant that I grew up surrounded by multicultural families. Because of this, I have always gravitated to those kinds of spaces. Workaway has been the platform that has allowed me to do exactly that and discover the world in the best way I can think of: getting to know the locals and the next generations. Now that I have finally finished a four-year degree on Translating and Interpretation, I'm really looking forward to experiencing the world in this way again.

Living on an island made it easy to develop many different interests, but a perfect day for me would involve going for a nice hike, taking a dip at the beach or a river, share a tasty meal in great company and end the day with a good book. I'm very active and love many kinds of sports, but I have always had a soft spot for reading and stories - be it books, series or movies - since I was a child. My parents really encouraged these interests while I was growing up, so I tend to enjoy them the most when it comes to spending time with adults and children. This of course developed into a love for anything creative: I love listening to music, singing, dancing, painting, photography... To me, these are the things that make us human and really make me feel alive. Cooking is one of my favourite hobbies, I love to share the dishes from my culture, cook for others and share and try new recipes! My mother-in-law taught me how to knit, I love making socks and hats (hopefully a sweater real soon?) and I've been teaching some friends about it, if you're interested in that kind of stuff.

Coming back to multiculturalism, my degree has helped me learn and deepen my love for languages. I currently speak Spanish, English and German, and I'm trying to get back to talking level when it comes to French. Right now I'm quite interested in learning either Italian, Portuguese or Swedish (or whichever language is spoken in your household, really). I've also been teaching English to children for the last 5 years, if that's something you might be interested in!

I'm a quick and avid learner, so new skills would also be very much welcome. Here I leave you a little list of the most important things:

- Cooking: I am an experienced cook, and I love learning and cooking with other people. If you're interested in trying new dishes and sharing your kitchen with me, I would be delighted.

- Taking care of children: I have had the pleasure of living with and taking care of some amazing children thanks to Workaway. Thanks to them, I discovered that I had arguably more to learn from them than the other way around. Seeing children grow, learn, and have fun is something I cherish and I love being a part of it.

- Languages: as noted before, I speak some languages, and I have experience teaching them. I'd love it if we'd help and learn from each other.

- Dealing with animals: I'm comfortable with any of them, and I'm most experienced with; dogs, which I love taking for walks and training them; horses, which I can ride on a basic level and can clean and groom; and chickens.

- Crafts and construction: I must admit that, even though I don't have a lot of experience, I do know how to get around with a bit of help. I'm very proactive and always looking for things to improve, so with some indications I could take off and work by myself. Lifting heavy things or any hard tasks are no problem for me.

Estrella stayed in our house while we went away for a few days, she took great care of the animals and the farm in general. We felt really comfortable leaving her there and knew the animals were getting a lot of love. We enjoyed a few days getting to know her, she is a lovely person and very helpful. We would happily welcome her back again!

I stayed with the Heller family for about a month and a half, and had a great time. From the very beginning I felt right at home, almost like a big sister to the children. I must admit, my written review won't do justice to all the fun I had around here.

For starters, my room was very spacious and cozy, and the house was so big and beautiful.… read more That also means there's always something to do! Cleaning, cooking, gardening, spending time with the children, little DIY projects and generally just being another member of the household and helping around like you would normally do at home. The food is delicious, organic, and almost no meat, and Judith is such a great cook with so many recipes. I tried so many new things during my time here, and they also really appreciate when you can cook and help around the kitchen.

We always spoke about the plans for the day after at dinner, but this can change! Living with three children means one must be flexible and be ready for constant change, which I found great since every day was different than the other. Another good thing is that we had no communication problems, since Judith kept me updated any time there was a change. Except chores and everything around the house, they're very social and there's people over very often, and anytime they did an excursion or went to meet anyone I was always invited, so I got to know a lot of nice people.
Next door live Tobia's parents, who really appreciate someone to have a good time with and get to know you and your country. I had lunch with them a few times and even baked a kuchen with Charlotte, so you can be sure you're getting to know the culture and cuisine!

I had such a great time with the children! Noah and Fridolin are the oldest, so full of energy and always building or planning something. It was so mesmerizing and fulfilling for me to see children developing in such a natural environment, getting their hands dirty, building with legos, reading and asking questions. Fridolin is quite passionate about animals and vehicles, specially anything used in agriculture. Tractors and cats may be a winner for him. Noah is very talkative when he warms up to you and was always willing to explain any German words that I didn't know. Now Rosalie! I guess it would be safe to say she was the one I spent most time with. She truly feels to me like the little sister I never had. She is very sweet, curious, and I really enjoyed seeing how she started learning new words. She is very talkative and always finds a way to let you know what she wants despite how young she is. My time with them was never dull and I miss them everyday. You can learn a lot by looking at the world through their eyes.

I could honestly write a whole paper about the children, but this must come to and end! I was looking for a place where I could slow down and learn, and that's exactly what I got. I made such beautiful connections with this thriving and wholesome family, and I couldn't be more thankful for the way I was welcomed. I hope everything goes well for you guys and lots of love until we meet again!
