Hi! My name is Sonia, I’m 22 years old and I’m from Italy. I have a degree in Cultural Heritage and I’m passionate about archaeology, history, and art.

Where do I even begin?

Spending three weeks with Jeff and Darcie was one of the best experiences I could have asked for. From the moment I arrived, they welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like part of the family.

My main tasks were repointing the stone walls of the house and doing some gardening. The work was always fair and flexible. I … read more worked around five hours a day, which gave me plenty of time to explore the beautiful surroundings, and weekends were completely free. They genuinely wanted me to enjoy my time in the area, not just to help with the project.

One of the things that made this experience so valuable was everything Jeff taught me. I honestly don't think there's anything he can't do! His range of skills is simply incredible, but what impressed me the most was how passionate he is about sharing them. He didn't just want the work to be completed—he wanted me to leave with new knowledge and practical skills. He patiently explained every step of the process, making sure I understood not only how to do something, but why. Thanks to him, I learned everything from basic car maintenance to the techniques behind repairing and building a stone wall. I left with so much more than memories—I left with skills and confidence that I'll carry with me for years.

And Darcie... she is one of the kindest, most caring, and generous people I have ever met. From the very beginning, she made me feel completely at home. Our endless conversations over coffee or dinner, her thoughtful advice, and the genuine interest she showed in me are among the most precious things I found in Vic-en-Bigorre. She has such a warm heart and a wonderful way of making everyone around her feel comfortable and appreciated. I will always be grateful for the time we spent talking, laughing, and simply enjoying each other's company.

But what made this Workaway truly unforgettable was the connection we built. Jeff and Darcie are two incredible people who have lived a thousand lives and have endless stories to tell. We quickly discovered that we shared many passions, from vintage markets to music and vinyl records.

Above all, we bonded through food. Our time together became a real culinary exchange: I introduced them to homemade risotto and pizza, while they made me discover so many delicious American dishes and recipes from all over the world. Jeff and I especially share a love for pizza, and we never forgot to save "one last slice for Italy" every time we had one. It's a memory that will always make me smile.

One thing that touched me deeply was how thoughtful they were. Knowing that I'm an archaeologist, they took me to visit the Gargas Caves during one of the weekends because they knew I would love them. It meant so much to me and showed how much they cared about making my stay meaningful.

Weekends were always full of fun activities. Thanks to them I met so many wonderful people, and all of their friends were incredibly welcoming and fun to spend time with. Every day brought new conversations, laughter, and memories.

I leave their home with a full heart, wonderful memories, and two friends I know I'll see again.
Thank you, Jeff and Darcie, for everything. This wasn't just a Workaway—it was a life experience that I'll carry with me forever.
