I spent the first act of my career behind the camera — as a documentary filmmaker and reality TV producer, telling other people's stories for a living. Now I'm writing the second act myself, on foot and by bike, traveling slowly through the world to actually live the kind of stories I used to just film.

Wherever I land, I shoot photos and video and pair them with a short poem or essay written from whatever I felt in that place — less a travel vlog, more a visual diary with a pulse. Along the way, I love spending time with local kids and young people, showing them that they don't have to just scroll and watch — they can pick up a phone and become the ones telling the story. I'd love to keep sharing that spark wherever I travel.

I bring a practical set of hands to go with the camera: I've worked kitchens in both Italian and Japanese restaurants, I'm comfortable with most hand tools and can fix furniture and gear myself, and years of producing have made me a natural communicator who works well across cultures. (Skills and languages in full detail are in the section below.)

I'm laid-back, easygoing, and always up for genuine cultural exchange. I light up around locals — especially students and kids — and I'm happiest in situations where showing up for real work with real people is the whole point.

My one week here was such a special experience that nothing else in my life can compare to it. This place sits on a vast land by a quiet lake, where horses and cows graze. It is an ambitious project being built by Neil, an adventurous extreme sports maniac, a seasoned builder and a self-taught engineer. Neil, Vanya and Kai live in a tiny house on … read more wheels built to fit their realistic conditions, and the family pursues a 100% self-sufficient life. The poo and pee I made, and the food waste, go through microbial fermentation and become the energy that heats the oven. The energy collected by the solar panels is stored in used batteries that were bought for almost nothing and restored over a long time. This energy runs the dishwasher, the washing machine, the air conditioner and every other electric device, plus a family spa that runs 24 hours, and there is still enough to spend a warm winter. On top of that, the by-product left after making biogas becomes fertilizer for the vegetable garden, where they grow peppers, eggplants, potatoes and tomatoes. It was the moment when a self-sufficient life, which I thought existed only in a dreamer's imagination, unfolded right in front of my eyes.

During my week here, I helped put stone tiles on the outer walls of the Summer Kitchen. First we matched the shapes of the tiles like a jigsaw puzzle, then spread cement following the sketch drawn on the wall and attached the tiles. I had never done this kind of work before, but Neil patiently trusted me, and with his lead I could complete my target mission (two walls). Thanks to this, I learned about cement plastering, including the mixing ratio of cement and sand. Although I didn't directly take part in those projects, just experiencing a house that actually works, with an off-grid solar energy storage system running on 100% restored batteries and biomethane gas connected directly to the toilet, gave me great insight. I have decided to live as a nomad traveler for now, but I'm sure that if I settle down somewhere someday, I will not ignore the experience I got here. Neil also wouldn't want the knowledge he shared to be wasted.

I didn't get to have many conversations with Neil's partner Vanya, but she was a thoughtful person who always cared for me, a stranger from a very different culture. 8-year-old Kai's job is Language Police, and he was a big help in correcting, at least for a while, my bad language habits like F-words and s***, which had stuck to my mouth during my long adult life. Every time I said one, I had to pay a 50-cent fine, so at first I thought it was a bit too much. But in the end he generously wrote off all my debt with just one game, which confirmed that the reason the Language Police exists is not making profit but correcting language. The week I spent with them is a stroke of luck that will never come to my life again. Wherever I live, I think this place will often come to my mind.

If you are a responsible workawayer and want to experience a different life, even without the comfort and convenience of the city, don't hesitate and go for it. Whatever work you are given, if you do it with responsibility, you will gain experience and knowledge much more valuable than the labor you provide.

Minch was an absolute pleasure to have around and I couldn't recommend highly enough, absolutely fantastic with our 8 yo boy, fantastic conversation, very hard worker and happy to tackle any task from stacking logs to building natural stone walls.

Minch was a very skilled and precise Workawayer, and it was a true pleasure to have him even for a short stay. He scraped my wooden portal frame to perfection and did a better job than some professional builders I have worked with. He is careful, capable, and takes real pride in doing a task properly. I only wish I could have had him stay longer.
