Descripción
I have wanted to volunteer in Africa since I was 10 years old! I visited some countries there in 1991 (Kenya & Tanzania) and in 1996 (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda & Zimbabwe) and it really stole my heart. I love the simplicity of life there - easy to say I guess when you come from a country where things are very different, where there is plenty, and materialism is rife. But to be honest, it's something I long to escape.
I'm passionate about connecting with people and feeling like I'm making a difference. I just want to be helpful. I currently work in healthcare and I love dealing with patients from all walks of life - it doesn't take much to brighten someone's day and bring a smile to their face, and that's what fills my tank!
My other passion is empowering others to find their true value and self-worth, to see them live their life to the fullest extent. I'm part of a local charity that works to empower young teenage girls to find the best version of themselves so they can own their future.
My husband and I enjoy camping and swimming and he loves to go hunting so I sometimes join him. I love to play tennis and keep fit. -

Que habilidades tienes?
I'm part of the operations team of a charity where we organise and facilitate 3-day conferences for young teenage girls aged between 10 and 16 years. This role involves public speaking, running workshops, facilitating panel discussions, organising games and other content. As a Christian organisation, our aim is to help the girls discover the treasure inside of them, who God created them to be, and empower them to live courageously.
In my paid employment, I have worked in a busy doctors' surgery for the past nearly 15 years, starting as receptionist and then moving to a nursing assistant where my role involved tasks such as woundcare and basic medical testing including taking bloods, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, etc. I'm now practice manager responsible for overseeing day to day operations - everything from paper jams to recruitment, accessing all available funding streams and implementing systems and procedures to improve performance and ensure smooth running of the practice. -

Algo más...
I just want to be helpful and immerse myself in the local culture and lifestyle, to be part of something bigger than myself and feel like I'm making a difference!!
I can juggle, play the guitar very badly and I play a random instrument called the chocalho which is a Brazillian percussion instrument best played in a Samba band. I like to keep fit by swimming and running.
I have a husband and 2 children, plus a granddaughter who is 6 (she's a real delight), and my dog Riley who brings me much joy.
I'm joining Workaway simply to spend a month in Uganda - yes, I'm leaving my husband behind....this is my passion, not his and he is happy for me to go and fulfil my dream. Maybe he will join me another day. :) -
