We are a small and growing suburban nursery dedicated to using green, sustainable, recycling, up-cycling, Eco-friendly methods to produce quality landscape plants to sell and a few fresh vegetables for our table. The nursery exists as a one of a few fund-raising efforts that support a co-op of Honduran women and their families. My home was flooded 6 years ago and I stopped inviting Workawayers because it was a BIG MESS. It is not such a big mess now and it is livable, but I need help to finish the remodeling. It's a work in process.

I am a keeper and teacher of many skills that are being lost in our current society. I am always very happy to share those skills. One thing I'm looking forward to doing is to make instructional videos to teach other interested artisans before the skills are lost forever.

    *** Update***

I have been a host for Workaway for several years, but my home and property suffered a major flood 6 years ago. I stopped taking visitors because of that. The house and garden still need a great lot of care, but if today's Workawayers are like the wonderful visitors I have hosted before, I know that you all are willing to put on your boots and gloves, pick up a shovel, a paint brush and go help. I would really love to start hosting again. I have hosted international visitors of one sort or another for 40 years and I love it. I'd love to meet you.

Visit with us for a week, a month or a semester. Here in Baton Rouge, we are a very small, suburban nursery dedicated to using green, sustainable, recycling, up-cycling, Eco-friendly methods to produce quality landscape plants, landscape art and a veggie garden to help feed us. We would love to have Workawayers help us accomplish our mission. The little nursery is part of my broader organization working to help encourage and enable families in need to better help themselves into better self-sufficient life situations in Honduras.

Workawayers and WWOOFers are expected to help about 20-25 hours per week. Scheduling varies. You are also expected to help out in the kitchen and living areas with basic household chores. Basically, you are expected to clean up after yourselves and share in keeping the house comfortable for all which includes doing dishes, keeping floors and bathrooms etc.

We have wifi and I think it works pretty good, but I am no longer tech-savvy guru. I need one ;)

Workawayers will also have the opportunity to learn and help with the planning and preparation of delicious, natural, low-cost, nutritionally sound meals for our group. This requires mostly scratch-cooking and baking (skills one doesn't learn by flipping burgers ;-). In season, we do natural food preservation including canning, pickling, freezing and drying.

We are omnivores here: An omnivore is an animal (including humans) whose species normally derives its energy and nutrients from a diet consisting of a variety of food sources that may include plants, animals, algae, fungi and bacteria.
AGAIN! The meals here are wholesome, from scratch, homemade, low budget, and made as much as possible with ingredients from local sources. I know it’s not the most current foodie attitude, but that is the point. I teach the old ways that have been mostly lost through generations. Our friends with more limited diets will probably not be happy here.

Possibly helpful could be knowledge, skill and/or interest in bookkeeping, documentation, research, marketing, public relations, fund-raising, grant-writing, blogging, website maintenance, art, videography and photography.

We are on the outskirts of Baton Rouge which offers a plethora of interesting, fun things to do.

There are two spare bedrooms in the house that share a full bath. There are a lot of ways we can change the sleeping options depending on the specific needs of our Workaway visitors.

Baton Rouge is home of LSU and Southern University as well as Baton Rouge Community College. If any student is interested in taking out one less college loan or otherwise keeping their expenses to a minimum by being a Workawayer, you need to chat with me.

All Worawayers, domestic or foreign are required to provide me with valid IDs and agree to a background check. Students will need to show me their documentation from their school.

I speak American English and some spanish. I have hosted, through various programs, students and other visitors from cultures all over the globe for much of my life. I can not and will not help you get a visa nor will I tolerate a visitor without a current tourist or student or other valid visa. However, any visitor who has a valid visa will probably be welcome to come join our project and have plenty of time to pursue your studies at the same time.

    Peace be with you

    Deborah

    August 2013

    From Will:
I've been volunteering here at the nursery for about a month now, and I've already learned and accomplished so much. Our troupe has lost a significant amount of sass with the departure of Nouvella. I'm really going to miss her netflix.. So far this month, Arnaud & I have pushed past our Nouvella withdrawal, and by adjusting our 3-person systems into two-man-ers, we have repotted an uncountable number of Sago Palms, elephant ears, and various other landscape and house/patio plants. The garden shed that was attacked by crazy raccoons is much less intimidating now that it's cleaned out, and awaiting floor repairs. Soon, we should be seeing the starts of our first fall crops, planted in a small well-composted zone we prepared last month. There are still many tens of thousands of cuttings to be made, of Carolina Jasmine, other Azaleas, and more. Arnaud is returning to Quebec at the end of this month, and I'm really going to miss him.
While our sleep schedule may not fall in line with the "norm," we are all enjoying our time here at the Nursery. Baton Rouge is a beautiful city to explore, and Deborah keeps us well fed through the wonders of Cajun cuisine. As Charlie says, "If you leave the table hungry, it's your fault."

    From Arnaud:

I'm always interested in learning what I can about new, to me, languages. My primary language is American English and my second language is Latino Spanish. I have hosted visitors with different programs from all over the world for 40 years, so I understand a few words in some other languages and I am always looking to learn a few more.

I do work online so I have decent wifi connection that reaches throughout the house and property. I'd love to have a visitor who is more skilled than I with the ever-changing tech world where we now live. I could use a bit of coaching to improve my skills.
