We are looking for hardworking candidates with confidence, initiative, and self-motivation. Ideally, we want helpers to be physically fit (it will make the work easier, if so).
Our business is a small home-based sled dog farm, based in Suomussalmi, Finland. Our farm is located in a remote place in the forest. There are good options for hiking, fishing, and spending time in nature. The nearest city is 100 km away, but a village with shops is only 26 km away.
On our farm you will experience a pack of over 70 dogs. During this experience, you will learn a lot about dog behaviour. There are many opportunities to learn to handle sled dogs. There’s more to this experience than just the dogs, this experience will provide you with insight to the Finnish way of living. We also have 2 cats and some rabbits. All of which are friendly with a variety of personalities. These dogs are trained year-round in preparation for the safaris hosted in the wintertime. Throughout the year you will have the opportunity to learn how to train dogs for safaris. However, during the summertime (July-September) it is often too hot to train to dogs consistently, therefore, we use this time to teach the dogs basic commands. Common duties as well as running the dogs are: feeding, providing water, cleaning poo, grooming etc. The expected hours are 08:00-17:00. We try to stick to a work schedule, but this type of work is more of a lifestyle. Although, the main priority is caring for the dogs, there's other duties such as chopping firewood, building kennels, and shopping for groceries.
Volunteers and I share a house along with a few dogs that are comfortably living their retired days indoors. We all are expected to join in with household chores. Past volunteers have also helped with cooking meals, for instance, we take it in turns each day to cook dinner. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided; however, any snacks or alcohol should be purchased yourself.
Usually it starts snowing mid-November and lasts until the end of March. During this time the weather can be as low as -30 degrees Celsius, it is essential you pack clothes that will keep you warm, I recommend wool clothing and not cotton clothes during this time. We do have some clothes here that we can offer to use, however, please don’t rely on these as there is a mixture of sizes and may not fit you. In the summertime it can be hot, so you needn’t bring your thermals. Do not bring any clothes that are valuable to you as the dogs will inevitably ruin them. Although, we do visit friends’ houses for the occasional party.
In the evenings you’ll have the opportunity to relax, go to the sauna, watch movies, and visit local events. Every now and then we try to visit different places such as Hossa, a national park based in Suomussalmi.
