Descripción
I was a teacher at an independent study charter school for 18 years. I have owned my property near the Sacramento River for 18 years and have created an outdoor, glamping lifestyle with cabins, a small garden, and an outdoor kitchen & living spaces. I enjoy hosting PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) hikers when they pass through between July and the end of September.

I have lived a life close to nature and am constantly working on simplifying. We will be living in small spaces, spending time outdoors, eating simple, whole foods, and producing my own live foods. We often have musical jams and time for tea/coffee in the mornings. There is always the possibility of a daily yoga practice too.
Ayuda
The volunteer help varies and includes helping with general property improvement/maintenance, watering, gardening, walking my dog, running laundry, and cooking if you enjoy that. Pacific Crest Hikers come through and stay during July & August. You'll be living as part of my extended family and often in a small community.
We work and play hard here. In the summer months there is often a swimming excursion in the heat of the day and some evenings I will be sailing on our local lake.

Accommodation varies seasonally: Small cabin with futon, and/or outdoor camping on a futon or twin bed, or in a micro-trailer with AC. Composting toilet/port-o-potty and rustic outdoor cold-water shower and outdoor kitchen.

I am located just off the Highway 5. Very close to the Pacific Crest Trail, national forest, the Sacramento River, and Dunsmuir. Mt. Shasta City is a 12 minute drive away. Transportation to our main town, Mt. Shasta, is limited to occasional bus service (M-F) or catching a ride with me when I go. I also have bikes that can be used to get into the closest town to us, Dunsmuir. There is also an Amtrak station in Dunsmuir, with trains departing north and south once every 24 hours. Greyhound also comes to Weed, but I recommend Amtrak if at all possible. Most ideally, you have your own vehicle for exploring. There is lots of natural beauty in my area.

What can I say about my experience with Kelly? Likely never enough! After having done several work exchanges both abroad and in the states, my time here with Kelly has brought my traveling experiences to a new plateau. Riding a train to my next location, I ask myself, how can it be better than what I just left? From the beginning to the end, my… read more time with Kelly was ultra rich and full of meaning, and an overall awesome time.

Kelly is a master communicator and through her interactions with me, she conveyed great respect for my time and presence, and I felt very dignified, enabled, and capable as a result. I mention this because, historically, I’ve experienced many condescending and/or patronizing hosts with an attitude towards guests that creates a kind of repressed and dreadful atmosphere. Kelly is like the antithesis to those kinds of people. If there were more hosts like Kelly on Workaway, the site would explode with eager travelers ready to get out there and meet some of the beautiful people this world has to offer.

On a practical level, she was beyond accommodating. She cooked many a sumptuous and healthy feast, and always made sure there was plenty of food available to me. Coffee every morning, with a cute little sign saying “Please Help Yourself” etc, the whole nine. She was always checking in with me to ask if I needed anything from town (which she graciously provided out of pocket) and regularly made efforts to show me the surrounding area. We went out on her boat a few times, went to different nature spots in the area. She was generous with her time and with her stuff. The space she has created is very relaxed and comforting with something for everyone. Kelly was very easygoing and allowed me a lot of room to just exist how I wanted to exist. Just a very respectful and mindful person, I can’t stress enough how personally validated I feel after having stayed with Kelly. Acceptance and tolerance were embodied in the spirit of the place. The amount of work that we got done is a testament to Kelly’s skill as a leader. The work itself seemed hardly like work at all when the atmosphere was so chilled out. The work was ever evolving and sometimes quite confusing (trying to put new things with old things requires patience and finesse) but the tools we needed were always available, resources were always on hand, direction was always provided, and most critically, safety was a consideration! Nothing we did was particularly dangerous, but safety was a consideration and Kelly gets major points for that.

Kelly had a friend there leading the way on the work we had planned, and he’s an awesome guy and I enjoyed working alongside him. I also met many fellow travelers there, and many of Kelly’s friends. She has incredible people in her life and was always involving me where she could. Also, Kelly has an incredible dog named Lexi. Lexi is so much fun and so loving, I love Lexi.

In short, this is an ideal work exchange experience for people who are coming from other countries, but especially for Americans who want to experience more of America! Cheers to Kelly and thank you so much for an unforgettable time! I’m looking forward to the memories of the time I spent at this place!
