Descripción
We are a young(ish) couple (family) that are 5 years into a journey to live out our dream of running a small resort in Portugal. We've purchased a beautiful piece of land in Alcobaça, next to Nazare which is a beautiful beach town famous for the highest wave ever recorded in history. It's a surfers paradise :-) There are 4 human members to the family and 4 furry ones. Jeff is a Canadian born 42 year old son of two Portuguese parents that has lived in Amsterdam for 10 years before arriving here. He's a huge basketball fan, coach and former player, easy going, loves to have fun and meet new people. Lena is a 38 year old Dutch native, born and raised in Amsterdam. She has a very kind nature, loves to cook, host, take care of her family. Together we are parents to a charming and kind hearted 6 year old boy named Tiago who loves to joke around, play football (soccer) and has endless energy. Next up is our beautiful and laid back 4 year old daughter Olivia. She is shy at first, but always funny. Loves to sing, dance and role play. The family wouldn't be complete without our shy 8 year old dog Joey, and our 3 cats Billy, Pepper and Ze.

In January of 2023, we will be entering our 5th year in business. We, like many people have faced some challenges with Covid etc, but have until now been able to persevere and move forward. We are often on the look out for fun spirited, motivated and responsible people to chip in to help maintain a high standard at the resort, as well as to take on new and exciting projects.

Portugal is one of the oldest cultures in Europe and has a fascinating history as a world power that discovered half of the world. It has the longest standing border lines in the entire world and benefits from a perfectly sunny climate, picturesque landscapes, delicious food, under appreciated wine, warm people and some of the most beautiful beaches. At our B&B, you'll enjoy learning new useful life skills, but also have the freedom to use the facilities on the property (Pool, BBQ, fire pit, etc) and help build other fun things like a swing that over looks a breath taking view, basketball court etc. One of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal is a short 15 minute drive away and that same beach is known for it's amazing surfing.

We're looking for friendly, low maintenance and motivated people that enjoy a healthy work hard, play hard mentality that would be willing to help us with the daily tasks of running our mini resort. There'll be a wide range of tasks to take on such as gardening, mowing the lawn, creating wood working projects, helping renovate a small 50 SQM studio apartment, BBQing, running errands and generally helping to create a paradise for our guests.

Alojamiento
The property itself is best described as a small resort. You, as our helper will enjoy the comforts of your very own apartment complete with most ammenities to help you feel at home. It's a detached ground floor apartment a short 5 min walking distance from the resort. You'd have a private entrance, bathroom and kitchen with internet access. The best way to describe it would be a "guest house" that was built by myself with the help of some former workawayers. You would have access to our pool and backyard amenities as well.

Although you're in a picturesque country setting with beautiful views and lanscapes, you're only a few minutes drive from a well known town called Alcobaça that has all the ammenities expected in a city. Also within a short drive is the beautiful beach town of Nazare, known for it's long white sand beaches and big waves. There is a national park also within walking distance in which you can explore if you like hiking and nature.

How did we ever manage anything without Ruth and Graham before they came. What an absolute pleasure and gift it was to have them stay with us.

Where do I begin? Well for starters, they both just have a can do attitude. They are very positive and really enjoy leaving a good and lasting impression through their work. They are definitely… read more responsible and are only satisfied with a job well done. I can't count the amount of times I told either one of them that a particular thing they were doing was fine, only to have them insist on perfection, often on their own time.

Ruth is tough as nails. The type of person to just get on with a task. She needs no supervision and you can fully trust that she is plugging away to finish a project in a timely and professional manner. She is skilled with a chainsaw and we certainly took advantage of that having her empty a 3 x 3 shed stacked to the top of wood and cur it down to fireplace usable size. This is an exhausting and back breaking task that Ruth made her own and left us with an empty shed. It was empty, because not only did she cut it to size, she packed it up in a van and brought it over to the resort where she patiently and almost artistically stacked the wood according to size. She also helped us with cleaning houses, painting, organizing storage units full of random tiles and construction materials (not an easy ask) and also helping turn one of our apartments from a winter storage, back into it's original luster for a NYE booking. She also took on the arduous task of weeding essentially the whole resort by herself. Never a single complaint through out the whole process. In fact, Ruth was even thoughtful enough to make us a delicious dinner.

Graham on the other hand was useless. No wait....I meant he was an absolute life saver and just a jack of all trades, but an electrician by trade. He is that rare bread of person that can seemingly fix everything and does it with such a positive attitude. Him and I worked together in the first few days running cables through nearly impossibly plugged tubes underground that had been crushed by the weight on top of it. I had reached my maximum with regards to patients in getting the cables passed, but Graham insisted and persisted and in the end we managed to do the impossible and pass all the cables. He also set up a series of sensor lights through out the resort and fixed a few random problems we had there too. He showed off some masonary skills by setting up a garden bordered by stone, fixed our fireplace fan, sealed our baseboards with silicone, fixed our oven, installed countless light fixtures and installed our kitchen exhaust fan. On his own time, he also came with me to one of the apartments because a guest had broken a key in the door lock. He managed to get it out and save the day. He also came on his own time, late at night to look at a problem with a pellet salamander at one of the apartments. On another occasion, he helped me move a van full of stones, also on his own time, never asking for anything in return.

Not only did they both not ask for anything in return, they both continued to go above and beyond. On their last 2 days before they left, both Ruth and Graham helped me build a big wooden shed. These 2 days were both on their last weekend with us when they could have been relaxing and preparing for their upcoming journey. Ruth was the master engineer that steered us in the right direction *saving Graham's butt, ahem* and Graham doing what he does...helping build. It was such a selfless and generous act that will not be forgotten from our side, but is just another example of the type of people you could expect if you're lucky enough to host them.

Aside from all this, they were just great company. We instantly became great friends and we have sorely missed them since their departure. We'll continue to try and convince them to settle in close to us once they decide to settle in their new home, because it's not often you come across people with this type of character, humility, humour and trustworthiness.

If it's not already blatantly obvious for any host reading this....if you're fortunate to be contacted by these two beauties, jump all over it. You won't regret it and will be grateful you did.

Both Cody and Rachel are just nice people. Very curtious, humble, polite, thoughtful, engaging, intelligent and just fun to speak with. They are flexible, low maintenance, hardworking, no nonsense, goal oriented and quality driven. They can work together, alone, with a team, supervised or not. It doesn't change their production or great attitude. They pride themselves on not simply getting a job done as fast as possible, but doing so while leaving a quality finish. They take direction well, problem solve at a high level, but are not afraid to ask questions because they are conscious of the final result and it's importance.

We had Cody and Rachel doing all sorts of jobs. None of which were particularly glamorous or easy. Cody helped put in some laminate flooring in two different houses, both with extremely tight time lines. He painted, he moved dirt, he weeded, mowed the lawn, sanded, collected big rocks, mixed cement, did some wood working, put trim in place amongst other things. We worked together and he worked alone and there was no difference in his production. He worked with a great attitude at all times and is very self motivated. He's also very fit, so there's seemingly no drop off in his energy level.

Rachel did all sorts of small jobs that carried so much value for us. She did a lot of painting...A LOT OF PAINTING!! Painted walls inside and out, painted doors, painted door frames, painted furniture, painted a fence and a shed etc. She fixed walls, sanded them too. She did some babysitting for us as well because we could fully trust her and completely felt comfortable with who she is and would be with our kids. Rachel did weeding and planting and is responsible for our beautiful garden. She also did a lot of cleaning for us. Not something we usually trust people with, because we take the quality of cleaning very seriously for our guests, but she proved time and time again to simply do a perfect job. Some of our great reviews make direct mention to the cleanliness of the apartments she was responsible for. All this despite cleaning not being her favourite job. She never complained, kept an amazing attitude and did a great job. Amongst the most valuable of her work was helping us put together our website.....most of which she did in her own time, because she is so driven and goal oriented. If you're curious, you're welcome to have a look for yourself. It speaks for itself and the efforts she put in the website.

I tried to kjeep this short and have much more gratitude than I could put into words. We were very fortunate to have them join us and if you as a host have that same opportunity, you should grasp it tight with both hands. We consider ourselves fortunate for that, but even more so that we met such great people and made such great friends. Thanks for everything once again guys.
