Namaste...My name is Jitu,I am the owner of Vinayak guest house in Bikaner city in the Thar desert,Rajasthan. It's a small family Guesthouse in the suburbs of Bikaner,which I run with my wife,father,mother and two young sons ( and not forgetting our two lovely Pugs..Honey and Duke). I am professionally a Bird watcher and naturalist working from the last seven years as a freelance wildlife photographer in the Thar desert.
I also organise camel safaris, jeep safaris, Bird watching tours, Botanical tours and Snake spotting tours.
There are lots of amazing things to see in the nature and it would be a great opportunity that you get to see these whilst workawaying here with me at the guesthouse.

You can learn how a real family home stay works and how to become a member of the family with all the cultural differences that entails,like language and customs. Working on the tours you can learn many things about the local wildlife that inhabit the Thar desert and about the local people and their cultures. Bikaner itself has many sights to see and local cultural areas to investigate yourself on your free time.

For the guesthouse,I need help in the day to day running,maintainance and promotion of it. This includes,servicing of rooms,dealing with guests needs,cleaning and maintenance of communal areas and help with checking in/out of guests.
For the tours I need help in the promotion and practicalities of them. If you have experience in Wildlife,conservation,eco-systems,nature,photography and also are used to driving vehicles in India that would be an advantage and would broaden your experience here.
If you have any ideas about how to make my guesthouse or wildlife/eco/camel tours improve for the betterment of my guests and the local wildlife and eco-systems,it would be gladly welcomed and we can discuss these and maybe turn these ideas into a small project for yourself to do.

The guesthouse is only 10 mins walk away from the Junagargh fort and Old city which is a great place to walk around sampling all the great streetfood,chai stalls,fresh produce and spice markets,temples and famous Bikaner sweet shops. Around Biknaner you will also find sights like The Rat Temple of Deshnok and the Camel breeding and research centre. The local people are very friendly and accommodating and the pace of life is much slower and calmer than a big city.

Great experience!!!
We kind of stranded at Jitu‘s place through a fortunate coincidence. Jitu actually didn‘t intend to take workawayers as there weren‘t too many tourists at that time. That‘s why we ended up at another host in Bikaner, but we didn‘t feel comfortable there. So we called Jitu quite late in the evening asking whether we could come… read more as paying guests to his guesthouse. Although it was late and he had to wake up early for birdwatching, he gave us a room and even offered us dinner. The next day we talked and Jitu agreed on accepting us as his first workawayers in two years. Ten wonderful days began!
We stayed in one of the rooms of the guesthouse with own bathroom and hot water – very nice and comfy! Jitu‘s wife Puja offers a great variety for breakfast and super tasty Thali for lunch and dinner. Neither us nor Jitu counted our working hours, it was all very easy going and informal. The tasks were diverse and up to our interests and skills. One day we helped out at the shop at the National Camel Research Centre and talked to many Indian tourists, which was fun. We took care of Jitu‘s old dog Duke and went for a walk from time to time.
Alex helped Jitu‘s two lovely sons to hang their basketball hoop back up. Our main task was updating Jitu‘s various online presences and social media accounts to advertise his guesthouse as well as his diverse safari and tour offers. Alex could use his knowledge about photography and created some videos for Jitu‘s Youtube channel together with Posh and Jai.
We were very lucky to meet Jitu and his family as they are all very knowledgable, warm-hearted and honest people. We even changed our travel plans to stay as long as possible.
The guesthouse itself is also a very nice and peaceful place with a cool and quiet inneryard and a sunny spacious roof terrace. We enjoyed spending a lot of time there. Still you should not underestimate Bikaner! It‘s a great city and there are plenty of things to do. Especially when you are with Jitu :) as he is a zoologist and birdwatcher with a PhD in reptiles. He knows a lot about local wildlife, nature and culture and can show you many special places and take you to many different safaris (camel safari, birdwatching, …). We also learned a lot about Rajasthani and Indian culture from Jitu and Puja. Puja is doing her PhD in chemistry and impressed us with a broad knowledge about the connection between food and health as well as natural/traditional medicine. We especially liked their vision towards conservation of nature and sustainable tourism.
We will never forget our time together and back home in Germany we will definitely get ourselves binoculars and start birdwatching :-)

I stayed at jitus place for around 8 weeks from january to the beginning of march. I arrived just before the camel festival in bikaner.
On the first day of the festival i was dressed up in a bright coloured rajasthan carnival outfit and then went through town on a horse and cart, until we reached the festival inside a stadium. Everyone was… read more waving, i felt like a celebrity, haha. The festival was really good fun.
All the camels were dressed up in fancy costumes, and there were different competitions, like camel dancing. Jitu had his own stall at the festival selling camel products which i helped with. I was a little tired by the end of the day because of talking to so many people,haha, but it was a great day.
On the second day of the festival we went to the camel farm,, and saw the camel race. Then we went back to the stadium once again and worked on the stall. Also there was a tug of war competition indians vs foreigners which the tourists won. Although i was not much use,, as i was smoking too much at that point, so i was out of breath very quickly, haha. But i still managed with a red face to collect my winners trophy on stage, haha. The trophy still sits proudly in my house today, haha.
Later that week there was also a bird of prey festival, at the jorbeer conservation reserve where jitu works. again this was another great day learning about all the different bird species.
The rest of my time was spent helping at the guest house with jitus wife and family,, and suradj the young lad who helped at the house. I would help clean, wash pots,, walk the dogs, prepare rooms for guests. Just generally helping out around the house and guest house. Jitus family, his wife, two boys, and his mam and dad and suradjh were so kind and really took care of me the whole time,, it was so nice.
Everyone made me feel at home, i felt like one of the family, and jitus wife was an excellent cook.
I would work around 5 hours a day,, then have the rest of time to myself. Sometimes i would go into town and visit the bikaner fort,, or just sit on the roof top and chill out in the sun, or play football with the lads.
Bikaner fort was really nice,, i kept going back because i liked it so much, hhaaha.
jitu would also take me too the nature reserve every so often on bird watching tours,, and one time i was taken with some guests to look for wildcats,, and luckily we managed to see them. and occasionally i would help at the shop. But the highlight of the whole time was when jitu took me and an australian lady guest to see the demoiselle cranes in a place called khichen.
These are a migratory birds that come all the way from mongolia and eurasia and spend the wintering months in Khichen, part of the thar desert. Local people volunteer and donate money to feed the birds, and up to 5,000 kilos of seed are consumned everyday. Now people flock from far and wide to see the birds feeding every morning.
We arrived on the morning and met jitus friend at his house and immedietely as soon as we got out the car there were cranes everywhere. We then went up to the rooftop and within minutes the sky was full of cranes just above our heads, all calling out to each other as they prepared to land,, it was really amazing.
Eventually they all landed and fed on the seed. I'll never forget it, it was a lovely thing to see.
I had a really great time at jitus with many fond memories

I stayed with Jitu and his family for just over 2 weeks and had a wonderful time. They are the most amazing hosts and really make you feel part of the family. I was able to assist Jitu with wildlife tours, help out at his leather shop and other jobs that needed doing here and there.
