Help us finish two beautiful eco-bures in a village-led tourism project in Fiji
Bula! We are a family and community behind Nanumi Au Eco Village, a small, grassroots, community-led tourism venture on Fiji’s Suncoast, near Rakiraki on the northern coast of Viti Levu.
We are not a resort. It has grown slowly and intentionally alongside our village and surrounding communities, with a focus on cultural exchange, environmental regeneration and creating opportunities for local families through tourism.
Over the past eight weeks, an incredible team from CAUKIN Studio has been living and working alongside our community to construct two new architecturally designed eco-bures using a mix of natural, locally sourced and conventional materials.
The main build is now almost complete — and this is where we would love some skilled Workawayers to join us!
Our place sits beside a mangrove forest and looks towards Fiji’s Bligh Waters, surrounded by village life, farmland, mountains and sea.
Our wider project includes eco-accommodation, mangrove experiences, village activities, traditional food, weaving, hiking, paddling and cultural exchange. Much of what guests experience is delivered in partnership with families and groups within our community.
Staying here gives you a very different experience of Fiji from the resorts of Denarau or the Coral Coast.
You’ll have the opportunity to experience everyday life in rural Fiji, meet our community, explore the Suncoast and understand the stories, relationships and traditions behind the place you’re helping us build.
The setting
We are located near Rakiraki, approximately 2.5–3 hours north of Nadi by road, on a part of Fiji that receives far fewer international visitors.
This is rural Fiji. Things move differently here. There may be mud, mosquitoes, tropical rain, power or internet quirks, children running around, dogs wandering through, people stopping to talanoa and plans that change because something else is happening in the village.
If that sounds interesting rather than inconvenient, you’ll probably love it here.
Who would suit us best?
Right now our ideal Workawayer is someone who:
* has genuine carpentry/building/joinery/plumbing experience
* is comfortable using hand and power tools
* can look at a construction detail and help work out a practical solution
* takes pride in finishing work
* doesn’t need constant supervision
* is easygoing and adaptable
* enjoys being around children and community life
* is interested in Fiji beyond beaches and resorts
* understands that cultural exchange goes both ways
Couples or friends are very welcome, particularly where at least one person has strong building skills.
Come help us complete the story
Hundreds of hours of design, building, weaving, thatching, problem-solving and community effort have already gone into these two little buildings.
We’re now looking for a few wonderful people to help us take them through the final stretch — from a construction project into a place that can begin welcoming guests.
If you have relevant skills, please tell us a little about your practical experience when you message us, including the kinds of building or carpentry projects you’ve worked on.

For us, Workaway is genuinely about exchange.
The CAUKIN build has shown us how valuable it can be when people from different parts of the world live, build, problem-solve and share skills together.
Depending on what is happening during your stay, you may find yourself joining us for village meals, learning about traditional Fijian food or weaving, paddling through our mangrove forest, visiting nearby waterfalls, drinking kava, hearing old stories or simply sitting around talking long after the tools have been packed away.
We ask everyone who stays with us to approach village life with curiosity, humility and respect. -

What we need help with
We are looking particularly for travellers with carpentry, joinery, building or practical construction experience who are confident working relatively independently.
The remaining jobs are mostly finishing work, including:
* completing and adjusting timber bifold doors
* finishing windows and window frames
* completing elements of the loft/mezzanine
* building and finishing timber steps
* trims, fixings and general carpentry finishing
* sanding and finishing timber
* helping solve the inevitable small building details that appear at the end of a build
* building and finishing toilet and shower
If you are a carpenter, builder, joiner, cabinetmaker, architectural student with strong practical experience, or simply a very capable maker who is comfortable with tools and timber, we would particularly love to hear from you.
This isn’t a project where we need lots of unskilled hands — at this stage, experience and attention to detail are much more useful to us than numbers. -

Algo más...
Rakiraki is a gateway to many tourism attractions. The biggest attraction is world class diving across Bligh Waters. There is also epic fishing for tuna, Spanish mackerel and mahimahi offshore. Day trips to beautiful nearby islands is also a must. There is also hiking and waterfalls in the dramatic mountainous landscape nearby. The project had direct access to the main road, making it easy to access public transport. Nadi internatinal airport a three hour drive away and Suva (capital of Fiji) is also three hours away (in opposite direction).
