Our place is not simply a place for travelers to sleep. It’s more like a community house that attracts like-minded people. A place where yogis, meditators, musicians, artists, healers, and generally magical people like yourself come to recharge and connect. We are 100% not a party hostel, but there’s a super friendly, social vibe if you feel like ‘peopling’--and a super chill, laid-back vibe for when you’d rather hang with the hostel’s two cats.
We hold daily events that help you grow personally and spiritually. Daily morning meditation, yoga classes 4 times a week, cacao ceremony twice a week, plus a movie night and family dinner. The hostel is located right in the charming historic center of San Cristobal de las Casas, within a 5-10 minute walk from anything you could ever need. Local markets, restaurants, nature hikes, and main attractions.
Our place is home to a Spiritual Residency Program, which is like a “soul school” where you accelerate your personal growth and spiritual awakening while living at the hostel for a month or more.
The benefits of this program:
- Find greater happiness, fulfillment and purpose in your life.
- Explore higher levels of consciousness
- Learn how to integrate financial success into spiritual living
- Learn highly effective techniques for meditation, lucid dreaming, being more fully present, and yoga as not simply a physical practice
At this time we are only seeking Work Away volunteers for this special residency program. If you are looking simply for a place to stay and sleep in exchange for working some shifts at a hostel, this program will not be the right fit for you. If instead you are looking to work on yourself and go deeper in your spiritual practice while also working some shifts at a hostel, please contact us for the brief application form.
Every volunteer resident in the program works three 5-hour shifts per week and one 2-hour shift (on average), which is considerably less work time than most volunteer programs. We take on more volunteers so each person can work fewer hours at the hostel and have more time to work on themselves.
Each week you will be required to attend 5 morning practices (7 to 8AM includes yoga, meditation and Yoga Sutras discussion), two evening meetings, one group class (yoga, meditation or cacao ceremony), and one hypnotherapy session to work on anything you wish.
You are welcome to attend more than the required minimum. There are also simple daily online lessons and personal goal-setting required. We use the power of accountability to help each other stay motivated to achieve our own personal goals, whether it's to learn a new language, play a musical instrument, write a book, start a business, and so on.
We are looking for people who will approach the program from a place of service and love, much like a Karmic Yogi. Someone who will show up for their own practice and spiritual growth with an open heart, open mind, and strong determination. And approach their volunteer work shifts with a friendly, present, and helpful intention.
English: Fluent. For you to get the most value out of the hypnotherapy sessions, meditation classes, cacao ceremonies, and the residency program in general, we are looking for fluent or nearly fluent English speakers. (This is because most of the residency program is conducted in English.)
Spanish: Beginner to Intermediate. We simply ask for basic conversational Spanish, enough to work the reception desk at the hostel, answer the phone and assist our Spanish-speaking hostel guests.
Please note that the Spiritual Residency Program is quite popular and often has a waiting list. There are only so many volunteer spots at one time. When you message us, we will send you a link to fill out the brief application form which asks for your availability dates. If your travel plans allow, we invite you to stop by the hostel in person anytime for a free meditation class or a cacao ceremony (details below). It's the best way to get a sense of the environment and the program, talk to the current volunteers, and see if it's a good fit.
We have 1 room with 6 bunk beds for all the volunteer residents.
San Cristobal de las Casas is known as a “pueblo mágico” (magic town). The town has a special magnetic vibe that seems to attract people from all over the world. This vibe lured the hostel’s current owner, Herb B., to settle here permanently after years of traveling the world.
Herb has over 20 years of experience teaching meditation and helping people explore deeper states of consciousness. His hypnotherapy practice is right next door to the hostel and serves as a powerful healing modality that interplays well with the other aspects of the Spiritual Residency Program. For more information on Herb’s approach to meditation, hypnosis and mentorship, we invite you to drop by the hostel in person (if possible) for one of his free meditation classes every Monday at 11AM, or come to a cacao ceremony (every Wednesday and Saturday 11AM). It's the best way to get a sense of the residency program, talk to the other volunteers, and see if the hostel is truly calling you in.
