We are Jen and Naomi, along with our pup Blue we live on a 3 acre property in the Blue Ridge Mountains, 2 miles from the lovely little town of Marshall and a 30 minute drive to Asheville. Jen is originally from Chicago but has lived in California and Europe over the past 20 years. Naomi is from the UK and we met in 2018 while we walked the Camino de Santiago. We have since started a community cafe together and hiked the Pacific Crest Trail.

We landed in NC in 2022 and love it! We have a vegetable garden, and are gradually making our land healthier, more productive, and more eco-friendly through planting and practicing permaculture. During the summer we have lots of vegetables to eat and surplus to share with the community. We have a cute little camper along with a guest suite and have visitors coming most weekends.

In our spare time we like to cook, go on walks, look for mushrooms, listen to live music, go to one of the many local breweries, play games, and spend time with friends and neighbors.

We will spend time during your stay talking about the principles of permaculture, as well as important practices of organic gardening such as composting, soil health, mulching, garden design, vermiculture, companion planting, herbs for health, native pollinator plants, crop rotation, and more! What this will look like depends on your previous knowledge, experience and interests! During your stay you will be able to learn about growing vegetables, growing mushrooms, using herbs for health, and more.

Our home is in the heart of Appalachia and it is a wonderful, hospitable culture to encounter. Down in town there's dancing and live traditional music every Friday night, and there's often other bands playing in town. There are many activities and places to explore in the area, including the Great Smokey National park and Mount Mitchell. Asheville is a cool city to explore as well. There are tons of community events in our county- Madison County, and in the next town Mars Hill you might be lucky enough to see the famous and amazing mountain cloggers on a First Friday of the month!

We have plenty to do around the land and especially planting and growing vegetables. Some other ideas that we may be working on in 2024 include: starting mini "screen-free” retreats, building a chicken coop, making a small wildlife pond, growing mushrooms, tincture making, growing microgreens, starting to raise ducks and chickens, making a woodland path. Helping with any of the above activities would be great, and we will be learning along with you!
March-May: These are the months to prepare the ground for planting, plant cool weather crops, and start seedlings under cover. Activities will include laying compost/manure/fertilizer, sowing seeds, watering plants, and starting new beds. From April onwards we usually go to the local markets on Saturdays to sell our surplus produce.
June- August: Continuing to plant and harvest herbs and vegetables, processing produce, going to the market.

There are always general maintenance tasks that need doing too such as mowing the grass, chopping wood, and turning the compost.

Naomi would love to practice her Spanish! She also has experience of teaching English and is happy to help with language Jen speaks conversational French.

You will have your own room in our house. We live in a ranch and you are welcome to use all the communal spaces- kitchen, dining area, front porch, yard with hammocks, and cosy sitting room with a fire. We have a bathroom for workawayers to use, and we also have an amazing outdoor "poor man's" hot tub which is a lovely way to enjoy the evening and gaze at the beautiful stars and fireflies.

On your 5 working days we will leave out breakfast items for you in the morning and prepare a simple lunch. In the evening we will share an evening meal together, provided by us. On your off days, we will play it by ear - if we’re around we can eat together, or you can do your own thing.

Usually we will work 9am to 1pm with a tea-break in the morning, and then ask for another half hour or so after lunch. We will make sure you are free from 3pm to relax and enjoy the rest of the day. In very hot weather these hours might be adjusted to escape the heat of the day. The day will be fairly structured, with a plan of activities to be done (when we were workawayers we found this system worked better!).

Ideally you will have a car, which will give you a lot more freedom. If you don’t have a car we can arrange pick up from Asheville or the airport, but there won’t be too much opportunity to explore the area during your stay. There is no public transportation in Marshall. We can lend you bicycles to head into town (2 miles away) but the road is fairly steep and very bendy!

After a day's work you can walk or head down into Marshall town, hang out on a hammock, run a bath, play corn hole, set up the projector for movie night, or head further afield for some fun!

On your days off you can go rafting or tubing, take a hike, visit a local art gallery, or go on a brewery crawl! We would be happy to take you out at least once during your stay. We try to have two workawayers to stay at any one time, so that you can enjoy exploring and hanging out together when we are busy.
