Be part of our experimental agroecological farm

Hey, you are welcome here but you should stay at least four weeks to be a real support for the project and be part of our experimental agroecological farm in the Bolivian countryside about 25 km away from the big city Cochabamba.

    Description of the project:

My name is Noemi and I came to Bolivia to start this heart project of mine in 1998. I’m running an experimental agroecological farm with 23 hectares in 3 different places located within the arid valleys of Cochabamba. My team consists of a few local employees working on the farm and we’re joined by international and local students who are learning theoretically and practically, researching and writing their thesis within their own projects and last but not the least by the volunteers that join us through this platform - all co-working, exchanging and learning together about agroforestry and agroecology. Through this work, the 23 hectares that form this place are recovering their ecological value, thanks to the application of agroforestry systems coupled with agroecological and syntropic measures. Here, we are proving that it is possible to produce fruits and vegetables without agrochemicals, simply by applying the ancestral knowledge about sustainable agriculture. We therefore are contributing not only to soil restoration and biodiversity but also are looking to promote organic food. Surely, we are aiming to achieve economic stability, however, this is difficult to achieve.

Fires destroyed our work first in 2013, then in 2017 and again in 2023. We have learnt a lot in terms of fire prevention. Ever since we have been working to regenerate the tree cover and to develop our productive fruit and vegetable plantings. We aim to promote agroecological production as well to farmers transferring them the knowledge.

We want to share our knowledge and experiences with all the people who are interested and willing to contribute within our project in order to prove that it is possible to live in harmony with Mother Earth, here we say in Quechua Pachamama. And that’s where you come in - help us on our mission to make a difference. Which areas do we work in? Implementation and managing of agroforestry systems, use of Kon-Tiki to prepare biochar and transform it to Terra Preta, elaborate and application of Chipped Rameal Wood, gardening, general maintenance tasks of the farm including cleaning of our infrastructure, residual waters management and others ...

The main activities change according to the seasons:

January: Planting, pruning in the agroforest parcels

February: Pruning in the agroforest parcels

March: Collect seed, prepare seedlings in the nursery

April: prepare seedlings in the nursery, prepare plant bags for sowing

May: Sowing trees and put cuttings into plant bags, grafting fruit trees

June: Sowing trees and put cuttings into plant bags, grafting fruit trees

July: Irrigate plants, prepare cuttings and put them in plant bags

August: Irrigate plants, pruning, planting of Opuntia cactus

September: Irrigate plants, preparing new agroforestry parcels

October: Irrigate plants, prepare new agroforestry parcels

November: Implementation of new agroforestry parcels

December: Implementation of new agroforestry parcels

Throughout the year you can help in vegetable gardening, animal care (donkeys, llamas, chickens, bees, guinea pigs) and in the tree nursery, all year-round we produce Terra Preta and Fragmented Rameal Wood to improve soil fertility.

    Conditions:

Staying for four weeks during which you complete the theoretical lessons and practical activities in dynamic agroforestry, you will receive a Certificate of knowledge in Dynamic Agroforestry. You will also learn about agroecological techniques and the preparation of Terra Preta.

The accommodation in shared rooms, a kitchen, hot showers, compost toilets and wifi is free. You will bring your sleeping bag, gardening gloves and toilet paper.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities:

Students and volunteers from all over the world stay all year round, so there is a lot of intercultural exchange, and we speak Spanish, German, English, French and Quechua on the same day. You will also meet international people and know locals and their traditions in the rural areas. This is a great place to learn about how nature really works, how we can adjust to climate change and what is the Bolivian reality.

Please, let me know if you want to come and please inform me about the dates of your stay, so I can reserve your space
