Think you have the video editing or translation skills needed to be part of our team?
We are a 30 yr old couple and also workawayer volunteers that now have the opportunity to be hosts at our cabin 2.5 hours from New York City!
We quit our corporate jobs three years ago and are now creating fun, educational documentary short films about locals and their traditional food from around the world. These videos are part of our non profit or NGO whose mission is to promote cultural pluralism through food (the idea that all cultures should be respected and celebrated).
We recorded videos of traditional recipes in people's home around the world while interviewing those people and we are looking to make those videos into 1-3 minute short films that are fun, educational, and positive about the cultures who embraced us. We are looking for two types of volunteers:
1. Experienced videos editors who want to be part of our production team and can "hit the ground running"
2. We are looking for someone that is a native palestinian or lebanese speaker and can help translate our content as we produce videos. If you are interested in learning how to edit videos, you will be working hand-and-hand with us as we create short films about palestinian and lebanese food!
We want to create a workaway environment where our volunteers are excited about the work we are doing and that they feel like they are part of it. We have done workaway as volunteers in various countries throughout the world and we understand what it means to be a good host so we want to make sure that communication is open and honest from the onset. We treat our volunteers like friends and family and want you to be comfortable, happy, and to be part of a cohesive and collaborative environment. We can guarantee good food, good conversations, great hikes, and a very enjoyable experience!
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
We believe in a healthy lifestyle, good food and cooking at home almost everyday. We believe in creating a positive environment and surrounding ourselves with other like minded people. If you have a specific diet or allergy, we are happy to cater towards your needs. We have been told the food we cook is delicious but are always happy for more criticism. We like to workout and we typically do some 40-60 minutes DIY workouts outside or hike, walk or bike. We are located 3 hours by bus or train to NYC and we may even plan trips to see our families near Boston or New York City so you will benefit from free transportation to those places! We like to explore nature, help others, and believe in making sure our guests feel comfortable and well fed! Anthony worked at an investment bank and afterwards started a healthcare technology company and Leila worked in Cancer Research at Harvard's Cancer Center so we have some interesting professional experiences. We have traveled on and off for the past 3 years and always love sharing stories, advice and knowledge!! Our mother language is English but we speak Italian and Spanish and happy to host anyone that speaks those languages or others. In terms of things you can learn from us is how to make Lebanese, Italian, food, homemade bread with sourdough yeast, or any of the recipes you see on our site, how to use google analytics, how to start a website, etc. If you want to research grants and do the grantwriting we would work together to fulfill all applicable grants, if you want to write a story about our experience traveling to an Oasis and discovering the rich cuisine in Egypt we will publish the story with you as the author, if you want to come on our next journey across the world as we volunteer on farms and discover international cuisine then we will figure out a way to make it happen! The sky is the limit to where you can take this volunteer opportunity so please do not hesitate to ask.
Want to help with producing and editing videos, or graphic design, while being 2.5 hours from New York City, Manhattan, The Big Apple? Leila and I (Anthony) are creating informative, fun, and interesting shorts videos, written stories, and marketing materials to publish on our website and we want your help. If you have experience with video editing, video production, graphic design, writing, journalism and/or marketing we would love to host you! We are trying to upload 2-4 minute videos based upon locals and their traditional cooking methods. Some examples of videos are mushroom hunting in spain, making kimchi in Korea, smoking freekeh in Lebanon, making maqlubet in Palestine , and making homemade tofu in Vietnam. Some examples of written content would be top 10 things to trying in Vietnam, the difference between olive oil and extra virgin olive oil, the history of the tomato, etc. If you are interested in food, travel, food history, and culinary heritage, even better!!
Above all, we want you to do what you are passionate about so that it does not feel like work. We want the experience to be beneficial toward your personal goals or passions. Other things you can help with are marketing, writing, grantwriting, or business development. All we ask is that you are a motivated, eager individual. Since we are in a start up mentality we ensure you that you will learn and that your experience will be meaningful. We are looking for people who intend to stay for at least 1 month!
If you have personal goals to experience while using workaway or while in New York, we are very happy to help you out and figure out ways for you to meet those goals; we may be able to help through friends, family, or join you in a road trip. We will help guide you to reaching your goals and can guarantee you will have a worthwhile experience. We expect you to volunteer 25 hours a week and you can divide those hours according to your schedule. We are happy to create a schedule of hours and free time and are very flexible. Some other workaway hosts try to add cooking and cleaning as expected items outside the 25 hours but we will not expect you to cook or clean for us at all. We want you to enjoy your free time relaxing in the cabin, hanging out at the local river, exploring nature, or taking a road trip.
We have a main cabin and a guest cabin located next to each other in Phoenicia, New York. The main cabin has 3 private rooms while the second cabin can sleep up to 4 in a shared spaced. Depending on availability, you will have the option to take a private room in the main cabin or have the guest cabin to yourself. We are happy to host a couple, or up to 3 volunteers but each volunteer would need to bring a laptop.
The cabin is located in Phoenecia in the Catskills, a Mountain area in New York. The area is beautiful and has a plethora of trails, rafting, rivers, and farmland. The town of Phoenicia is a small friendly town that has a movie rental shop, one grocery store, a delicious bakery/deli, and a great pizzeria. On time off you can take a bike and go on an adventure, take a bus to a Kingston or Woodstock, visit New York City, hang out in nature, play with our dog ( a super friendly and well trained Boarder Collie named CC), or just hang out and read. We are happy to help coordinate plans or take you on a few road trips if you are here long enough!
Due to the remoteness of the cabin, we have no cell service or internet while we are at the cabin. However, we make daily trips to Phoenicia (a 15 minute bikeride) to work on our computers at the local, friendly and very nice library. When we found out we could not install internet, we were initially upset but after getting into a routine, we found out that the time away from internet actually improves our workflow and productivity.
