Descripción
Learn how to milk goats and help us with daily farm chores outside of Homer. Help needed mid May until October. We built our own farm and have goats, rabbits, chicken and a greenhouse. We also make cheese and grow oats. We do eat meat and live primarily from what we grow on our farm. Sundays are minimal chore days, only the milking and feeding of the animals. We attend church or relax and enjoy a day of rest.

We will work in the garden and greenhouse. At different times of the year you can learn about processing garden produce or butchering. At different times there may be building projects where you will learn how to build and use hand tools.

we have two small trailers for housing. Shower and laundry facilities are available in our home. Meals are usually shared as a family but your housing has a small stove for cooking. Internet service only works at the farm house.

We ( Terry 64 and Randal 68) live 17 miles out of Homer and public transport is not available. We will pick you up in town. Also during the week rides are available as we deliver our dairy products to Homer. You will have opportunities to spend time in town and exploring some of the country around the farm.

Wow, what a great experience! Spent a month with Terry and Randel on their beautiful goat farm and did not want to leave! There's so many good things to say:

THE FAMILY: Right from the start, I was welcomed into Terry and Randel's family with open arms, and they treated me with so much kindness and care the whole time. I really felt like a part… read more of their family, as they brought me along to different family events, from Thursday night BBQs to their 4th of July celebration. And I got to know their kids and siblings as well, who are just as lovely!

THE FARM: The farm is lush, clean, and very picturesque. And the view of the Kenai Mountains (including 2 snow-covered glaciers!) from their farm is hands down the most beautiful view I have ever seen from a piece of property. The pictures do not do it justice!

THE WORK: Terry and Randel do a good job of mixing up the daily tasks so you're not stuck doing the same thing over and over again. The tasks are relatively easy and enjoyable - making sure the goats have hay and fresh water, watering the gardens, weeding, cleaning the barn, or picking strawberries were some things I did. And I got to milk the goats a bit of course. But my personal favorite "task" was playing with the baby goats. More on this to come...

THE ANIMALS: The baby goats are literally the cutest things ever! They're so playful and fun and do all sorts of cute "goat things." The more time you spend with them, the more attached you become. I was not expecting to become so emotionally attached to the baby goats by the end of my time there (I was crying when I had to leave!) And they have some really cute bunnies and a wonderful dog, too!

THE GREENHOUSE & GARDENS: Terry and Randel grow lots of yummy fruits, vegetables, and greens on the farm! Great place to learn how to garden. And the best part...they make for the freshest, most delicious salads!

THE ADVENTURES: Depending on Randel's schedule, he may take you on an adventure or two around the Kenai Peninsula! We went on some fun beach ATV trips, drives to scenic overlooks, and trout fishing at Johnson Lake. And the other Workaway volunteer and I took a trip across Kachemak Bay and went hiking and camping right next to a glacier! I will say, the farm is very remote and not centrally located in Alaska. So, if your goal is to explore a lot of Alaska in a short amount of time, I would look elsewhere. However, because of that remoteness, the farm gives you the opportunity to "get away" from the world, do some self-reflection, and relax.

THE STORIES: Terry and Randel are some of the best storytellers I have ever met. They are both original Alaskan Homesteaders, and have some unique and crazy stories about what Alaska was like "back in the day." I am American myself, but they provided a totally new perspective on American life for me. You'll also learn a lot about cool things like bears and rodeo-ing!

If you want a place to reconnect with nature (and some very friendly animals), do some rewarding work, learn a lot about Alaskan life, and meet some amazing people, Terry and Randel's farm is your place! Thank you so much, Terry and Randel, for a great time. I'll be back soon!
