… read more toujours quelque chose à faire, mais le travail n'est pas absolument lourd, au contraire, aider Marie Christine de dans entre tableaux et meubles anciennes ou dehors à l'ombre de l'énorme chêne c'est une expérience presque magique. Avec moi, il y avez trois otres workawayers et Marie Christine à été toujours disponible pour nous lasser amuser et explorer la région mettant à disposition sa voiture aussi. Mercis Marie Christine! What an amazing experience we had! We spent one month living in the lovely chateau (much bigger than it looks on the picture) and found ourselves very fortunate during all this time. The chateau and large property with 500 years old oak are beautiful and so is also surrounding countryside, very quiet too. The family was very nice and relaxed, they
… read more shared many interesting stories with us. The work was varied, from taking care of the children to doing washing up. We also renovated old tennis court and had the opportunity to play a lot. As we were 4 volunteers at the time, Marie-Christine provided her car for a trip to the sea and Carcassonne. Everybody spoke very good english, so communication is really not a problem. We were supposed to be working on a campsite this summer (also through workaway) which didn't go to plan, and it was Marie-Christine who came to our rescue!

… read more friend of hers. She is an extremely generous, warm and friendly person, and living in a chateau and hearing the many stories her and Claude have to tell was an unforgettable experience. While we stayed there we worked up to 5 hours a day, mainly doing decorating work in the garden in preparation for a wedding being held in the hotel next door. This was enjoyable work but only a minor part of our stay. We felt more like guests in the chateau considering the extent to which we were welcomed into family life. We ate very well at the chateau, Marie-Christine is a fantastic cook and meal times together were always good fun (Sophie will never forget trying her first oyster, and William his first apricot!!) We also joined them at the Garrevaques summer fete and had a great time dancing the night away with the locals.
We divided our time off between staying at the chateau (chilling by the pool or going for cycle rides in the countryside) and exploring the region. There is plenty to see within a 45 minute drive of Garrevaques - the towns of Albi, Carcassonne and Toulouse were particularly interesting and Narbonne beach to the south is only an hour and a half by car. In order to be independent and to make the most of your time here we would strongly recommend having a car, as Garrevaques is largely countryside.
Thank you again Marie-Christine and Claude for your generosity, it was great meeting you and your family. We were hoping to come to France to improve our language skills before going back to university, but doing this whilst living in a 15th century chateau exceeded all of our expectations! I had an absolutely lovely time at the Chateau with the Combes family. Staying here, I ate well, slept in a beautiful room with my own bathroom, enjoyed conversing with the family (in my limited French, mostly, which I was able to practice here!), and found the children charming. They are very creative and curious, and are good at amusing
… read more themselves, so that even when I was watching them, unless we were building forts together, I was able to read and write.
The Chateau is not very close to any cities, but I had plenty of time off. One day, Claude drove me into Albi, and I was able to explore the region famous for Toulouse Lautrec, and another day Marie-Christine took me to catch the bus to Toulouse, and made a list for me of the best things to see while there. Furthermore, there are several bicycles free to use for a relaxing ride over the French countryside, or to go into the closer town Revel to meet other twenty-something's, hear some music, or just check out the town.
I only stayed two weeks, since I had planned to spend my summer errant, but if I had been looking to stay for a longer term experience living with a family in France, this would have been it.
To the Combes family: Thank you all so much for those two weeks! I hope you find/have found someone perfect for the kids. My journey is almost over, I will write to you soon. All the best,
