I live on a small farm with sweeping views of the Great Western Tiers in Tasmania, just outside the fabulous, funky, arty town of Deloraine.

The area is rich with bushwalking tracks, waterfalls, rivers and wide-open spaces, and there’s no shortage of local food and craft to explore. Within easy reach are a winery, fish farm, cheese factory, truffle farms, a chocolate factory, an ice creamery, a honey producer — and plenty more besides. Deloraine also hosts one of the largest craft fairs in the southern hemisphere each November, when the town comes alive.

The local community is a wonderful mix — from artistic, alternative folk to traditional rural farming families — and there’s a strong sense of connection and creativity here.

On the farm itself, I have a small herd of cattle (one of whom I plan to hand-milk when she’s old enough - oh! she calved in Dec so she is old enough!), a couple of old horses, and an evolving project focused on becoming more self-sufficient. I’m a mix of experienced and novice — learning as I go — and I value curiosity, practicality and willingness over “knowing it all”.

There is also a regular, slightly funky community that gathers here at times, so you may find yourself part of an extended family — shared meals, shared work, shared stories.

I’ve hosted international travellers for several years in my share house in Launceston and am now bringing that same spirit of cultural exchange and hospitality to the farm. I love hearing about other people’s lives and cultures, enjoy working alongside others, and am passionate about people growing into their own capacity.

I’m clear that this place thrives best through partnership. Working together, we can create far more than I ever could alone — and have some good adventure along the way.

    Cultural exchange & learning

This is a rural regional area, just 15 minutes from the vibrant town of Deloraine. It’s a place where countryside living and a thriving creative community sit side by side.

Deloraine has a strong local culture — whole foods, active gyms, social pubs (including one that brews its own beer), food vans, arts, and a wide range of community-run activities. It’s a town where people still know each other, get involved, and show up.

What makes this area special is the diversity: artistic, alternative and sustainability-focused lifestyles walk shoulder to shoulder with traditional farming families and long-established rural practices. Travellers get to experience real regional Australian life — not a curated version.

I’m actively involved in the local community and will introduce you to it. This includes informal social gatherings like “Beers at the Bitumen,” fitness and gym communities, and occasional hosting of a local monthly camping-and-breakfast catch-up (OMBEC), where people gather to share food, stories and time together.

There are opportunities to connect with local theatre groups, paddling and kayaking communities, and other interest-based groups depending on what you enjoy.

On a personal level, you’ll learn practical rural skills — fencing, animal care, homesteading, handcrafts — alongside creative and reflective practices. I can teach spinning, sewing, and various making skills, and I enjoy thoughtful conversation and enquiry.

If you’re curious about how people build lives, communities and meaning outside the mainstream, you’ll find plenty to engage with here.

I have an artistic nature paired with an engineering-style mind, and I enjoy creating environments — both physical and social. I also have a wide network of friends and contacts, which I’m happy to share during your stay.

What I value most in this exchange is partnership: working alongside someone else brings focus, momentum and shared accomplishment, and in return you’ll gain hands-on experience in this environment, genuine connection, and insight into a grounded, community-based way of living.

I’m looking for someone who is physically fit, hands-on, and comfortable with practical work. This is an active environment, and you’ll be using your body — lifting, digging, building and moving — so a reasonable level of fitness is important.

People in their late 20s, 30s and above are very welcome. If you’re younger but already handy, capable and self-directed, feel free to reach out — skill and attitude matter more than age.

The work here is varied and creative. Projects include:

building and repurposing cubby houses into usable spaces

fencing (this is a big focus at the moment)

    creating a garden enclosure

    general gardening and land care

tending to cows and a couple of older horses

    handcrafts and other homesteading-style activities

This is not factory-line work — it’s problem-solving, learning as we go, and taking pride in creating something useful and lasting.

If you’re fit, practical, creative, curious, and socially comfortable around others — and you enjoy being part of a small, informal community — you’ll likely feel very at home here.

    Alojamiento

You’ll be staying in a small retro caravan, comfortably set up with toasty warm bedding and your own basic cooking facilities if you want them. It’s simple, cosy, and very liveable.

Bathroom facilities are currently camping-style: a short-drop toilet and a bucket hot-water shower. If you’re anything like me, there’s also the option of a cold-water bucket shower for that properly alive wake-up.

I’ve also recently set up an outdoor hot tub — an old bath with a copper coil and fire offset to the side — and we often have a weekly soak under the Milky Way. Steam rising, stars above, winter air… it’s genuinely something special (and yes, I still get a kick out of it even though I live here).

These facilities will continue to improve over the year, with a composting cubby-house bathroom already in the wings. If you enjoy being part of a place that’s evolving and improving, you’ll be right at home here.

    Food & shared living

I’ll provide food for both of us, and you’ll be involved in meal preparation as part of daily life — cooking is part of the rhythm here, not a separate chore. I also ask that you contribute to the pantry where you can, and, let’s plan meals together.

If you enjoy cooking and are confident in the kitchen, that’s a huge contribution and very much appreciated.

Many meals are cooked on the wood stove, over an open fire, or on the barbecue, often shared communally with others who may be staying or visiting. Food here is about nourishment, connection, and doing things together.

Time off, local area & transport

There’s no shortage of things to do in this area, and plenty of scope to explore Tasmania beyond the farm. I enjoy getting out and about and, when it suits us both, I’m happy to include you in social outings, local adventures and trips to nearby places of interest. This is a big part of being with me AND if you want to chill at home/work on a project instead - all good!

Having your own car would be ideal and gives you the most independence. That said, I’m not far out of Deloraine, which has bus services connecting to other parts of Tasmania. I travel into Deloraine three to four times a week and into Launceston weekly, so there are regular opportunities to get into town even if you don’t have your own vehicle.

As I get to know your interests, I’m happy to help you connect with local groups, activities or communities that support your own learning and development outside of farm work, if that’s something you’d like.

Time off is respected here. While we’ll be sharing a space and some social time, I also value privacy and personal downtime. We’ll create a simple, clear rhythm that supports us both — time together, time apart, and space to do your own thing.

There are a number of all weather places to park your van especially in summer and throughout the year around the main dwelling here. If needs be I can provide power by running an extension cord out to your van. We will be sharing bathroom facilities, if you don't have your own onboard facilities if you have a caravan.

    Lusy the wonder cat...

around 6yrs old, Lusy is what is called a 'calico' cat, with black and orange splotches on her in odd places with an orange and black mixed tail. She has pink 'jelly beans' and ears and while looking like a princess, she loves to roll in dust and get dirty..and is a good bunny killer....which she does not so much at the moment! Known to be not the most friendly colour cat, she is steady, has never bitten or scratched me and is what I would call 'cool' in nature. Probably at times exactly like me!
