Welcome fellow travelers! As a Workaway volunteer myself I know the value of getting involved in a project with others, meeting and chatting with new people from around the world. We live a quiet life here, you will wake to the sound of bird call New Zealand is so famous for. There are no artificial lights outside out the home so we can all enjoy the night sky, which I can say hand on heart is the most amazing I've ever seen on the planet. As my partner is busy with another property I need a bit of help on the (shared) property, some light DIY projects and gardening. No set hours but probably only about 8 hours a week- we'll work by agreement (probably around the weather, my work and your recreational ideals). We could do 1 full day or maybe 2 half days, or what suits us both so you have plenty of time to climb or explore or just chill. Its a beautiful peaceful area close to the Takaka river and the rock climbing crags. Would suit an active fit independent person or couple with construction skills and able to climb a tree to prune, and are happy for the most part to entertain themselves in the evenings. As you will see this is a shared property so there are a few rules we need to keep each other, the animals and environment safe. They are straight forward. I'll write them down for you to refer too when you're here. I'm easy going and flexible so after reading the profile please feel free to contact to ask me questions even if you can't stay at the moment.

I am an organic gardener, mostly for other people, I only have a small garden here but I can share what I know as we work, and I hope to learn from you too how gardening is in your part of the world. I find working alongside someone is a great to get to know each other and share stories with ease. I love hearing other travelers stories. If you've been to Vietnam (my favourite) we could talk for hours!
I have lived in Golden Bay for nearly 30 years so I know most of the best places to walk, spots to kayak, places to swim or just enjoy the sunrise or sunset. Golden Bay is between two national parks (Abel Tasman and Kaharangi) with two of the well known great walks which are easy-to moderate and the mountains beyond with more difficult hikes and camping for the prepared and fit. I have been an avid hiker over the years (we call it tramping here in NZ) covering a lot of conservation state land and bagging quite a few peaks. I can help you make the most of your time here by sharing my knowledge of places to go and my maps, tips to enjoy and keep safe. NZ hills are remarkable but you must be prepared with maps and the correct clothing etc. If you don't have a vehicle I can drop you off at some of the track starting points depending on where you want to go and how far away, I could potentially hook you up with other trampers.
The ocean for swimming and kayaking is about 20 minutes drive. I will provide a basic map and show you all the best spots to go. If you don't have a vehicle I can take us to the ocean at least once a week.
The small township of Takaka is only 5 mins drive or 10 minutes by bicycle. Kiwi's are a friendly bunch so you can meet locals, as a holiday area in summer there are many people traveling from all around the world so you can meet many people and enjoy the alternative/Arty vibe our area is known for. I can take you to the famous Mussel Inn bush cafe with its local vibe, own brewed beer and outside pit fire -- its a friendly social place.
The property is only 5 minutes walk to the well known rock climbing cliffs of Paines Ford that are visited by people from all around the world. So if you're a climber (or simply watch) you will meet many active interesting people. 3 of our fabulous popular river swimming holes are in the same reserve only between 2-10 minutes walk. You can go to anytime and you're welcome to join us for the evening rock bathe, swim and chat with the neighbours. (weather dependent the water is cold but usually good by December)
My partner has lived on and tended this amazing property for many years, he can take you on a walk to show you glow worms and magnificent trees. Please don't wonder around without guidance however as you may end up down a tomo or cave and not get out.
I'm vegan so happy to share the philosophy and recipes if you're interested. -

Alojamiento
Accommodation available is old style Motor-home you can stand up in, with double bed, bluetooth stereo, self contained kitchen, gas, fridge, sink, pots, plates, tea pots etc all available for use etc. Old fashioned solar shower, chemical toilet for overnight use. There is a shared bathroom (shared with me) with a compost toilet and hot running water for a bath.
You can also park up and use your own camper.
I can share some lunch when we're working and a welcome shared evening meal other times you need to provide your food and be independent. I'm vegan so would want people to at least be vegetarian if your cooking in my accommodation.
Please no smoking and drugs on the property.
You're welcome to have a drink or two but keep the vibe low key as other people also live on this property.
There is often a gathering of climbers and travelers down by the river or in town for the more socially inclined. -
Algo más...
This is a no spray/poison property mostly managed organically.
Work is by my direction only and volunteers need to stay on common land where shown and not go onto others private property unless invited. Its important you don't wander off into the forest by yourself as you can easily get lost and they are many tomo and caves you could fall in.
Also need to be respectful using the shared drive ways, driving slowly (we have lots of Pukeko, Weka, Canadian geese in the wetland that are residents too)
Please no open outside fires as it gets very dry in summer and we are surrounded by trees.
I will have a few things noted down so you can refer to them to keep as all safe and happy.
You may be able to use my bicycle. (when I'm not) If there are two of you perhaps a bike mechanically minded person can tidy the older one up to use. If you don't have a vehicle I can drop you into town at times.
Sorry no pets as there are animals on the property.
Sorry there is no internet available but the area receives Spark/2 degrees on mobile phones so if you need internet ensure you get a Tourist SIM when you arrive in the country.Summer evenings are rarely very warm so bring something warm to wear. It can rain anytime so bring a raincoat. When the days are sunny and warm they are magic, so don't forget your swim gear. -
