Hello! I’m from the US originally but have lived in Patagonia for 12 years. I’m building a house from straw bale and clay, have chickens, and have a big organic garden filled with all sorts of fruits and vegetables.
I love to work with food preservation, medicinal and sacred plants and edible wild foods. Twice a month I guide temazcal ceremonies on the property, and I often host women's retreats here or Kambo medicine retreats.
The property is 27km from town, so this is not the place for people who want to be able to go into town all of the time. This IS the place if you like peace and quiet, starry nights, and lots of connection to nature. I do not usually host more than 4 volunteers at a time, so if you want a busy scene with lots of people around, this is not it. If you want to be on your phone or computer in all of your off time, this is not the place for you.
The work day begins at 8:30am until lunch, then we siesta for a few hours (we have lots of hammocks and also a freshwater stream on our property) and start back up at 4:30pm. The work schedule is 5 days of work followed by 2 days off (most volunteers choose to go into town or to go hiking on the nearby trails).
Accommodation while we are building is rustic.

Volunteers can learn about organic gardening and natural construction techniques. There is also interesting indigenous culture, national parks, hiking trails and other outdoor activities in the area.

We are building a straw and clay house, which means a lot of material prep of filtering sand and breaking down clay. There is always work maintaining the organic garden and cleaning overgrown woodland. Other jobs could include canning food, cleaning the chicken coop, turning the compost bins, cutting and moving firewood and general building tasks (usually with recycled materials).

Volunteers sleep in tents. While most people prefer to bring their own camping gear, we do have a basic tent (with bedding) available to use if you do not have one. It's Patagonia and we are up in the mountains, so the weather can change abruptly - it can sometimes get chilly or rainy in summer and autumn can be warm and sunny - you never know, so plan for any type of weather. We have an outdoor kitchen with cooking gas and a dry outhouse. Healthy vegetarian meals will be supplied. If volunteers want meat, dairy or coffee, they are more than welcome to bring their own supplies of these.
To be clear: Please specify an exact arrival date and stick to that. Volunteers need to arrive before 11am on the arrival date.
There are many outdoor activities in the local area, and we can assist volunteers in arranging activities. There are many hammocks in the garden and a freshwater stream to explore on the property. There is a local bus which comes from town to within 3km of our house.
