Hi Workawayer's, I’m Karen,
Due to the protection of wildlife, I only take helpers one week per month. July now open.
Help needed now in the bush, and lots of odd jobs.
Handyman skills may be needed also.
I’m a licensed wildlife carer and a conservationist and my property is certified as "land for wildlife"
I also have a Certificate 3 in Conservation and land management, and Cert 2 in Horticulture
My place is 11 Acres of real (native) Australian Bush with winding tracks and Rainforest along a rocky creek.
It contains a few rare native plants and there are lots of different ferns, palms, rainforest plants, vines and very tall gum trees.
The creek has natural beauty even when it is dry.
Hundreds of bird calls echo through the valley all day and loads of frogs and insects call each other every evening.
My hand raised Wallabies lay about in the bush on hot days, and emerge in the afternoon for a graze, and wild possum’s roam around at night.
I renovated a site office and turned it into a home to temporarily live in. Now 17 years later it needs a bit or repair but still liveable. And now it’s available for back packers to stay in because i’ve finally moved into the new house.
A shipping container provides work shop and storage. And a second container is also backpackers accommodation with bunk beds, but there is only a fan for hot nights and blankets for warmth in Winter, so you have be tough and live within the elements.
My workawayers are allowed one square foot of wall space to leave there international mark. The wall is nearly full, and is fun to read.
This property is totally self sufficient which means there are no phone cables, no power lines and no water pipes........a "stand alone" solar system and generator provides electricity, water from tanks and mobile phone and wireless Internet have great reception. BRILLIANT!
BUT, this does mean restrictions on power and water. So peeing outside is best practice around here!
Charging equipment may only be done when the sun is on the solar panels, 8am-1pm
The daily routine is….
7.00am breakfast,
8-12 work
12-1 shower
1.00 lunch
Free time
6pm dinner
The animals you might find here are:
Red Necked Wallaby's
Swamp Wallaby's
Paddymelons
Koalas
Thousands of wild birds
Frogs
Water Dragons
Land Mullets
Goannas
Bandicoots
Snakes
Ticks
Spiders
Big Ants
Leaches and heaps more but it depends on the season.
PLEASE DON'T APPLY IF YOUR NOT INTO HARD WORK OR AFRAID OF CREEPY CRAWLIES!! (insects).
I only take people for short stays 7- 10 days.
I can pick you up from Taree train station, then we can go to the shops if you need snacks or alcohol.
If you have your own car it's only 20 minuets to the beautiful beaches of Forster and Tuncurry, or you can come with me into town on a day off.
On Days off we usually get groceries and sight seeing done, and we all buy our own lunch to eat at the beach or rock pool.

Work hard in the morning and enjoy the wildlife and property in the afternoon.
The usual tasks are:
Picking up sticks and branches taking them to a fire pile
Cutting down some small weedy trees and getting them to the fire pile
Weeding
Keeping an eye on burn piles
Moving rocks about in the creek to form a rock pool
Emptying gutters of leaves
Track maintenance
And plenty more.
When you come here it's NOT all about the animals, it's working in the bush, to maintain wildlife, habitat.

Wow, where do i start, Christine didn’t come but Bev was a whirlwind on her own.
Teaching me about apps and a different communication style. We went swimming together, and investigated the local markets . Bev loves working outdoors and really got stuck into it, she was a massive help. I can hardly wait to see her again in England when i go over.

I was a little hesitant about two 21yr olds, but these guys were great. Always happy and could take a joke. They got stuck into anything I threw at them and we got heaps done.

Karen is such a nice person. Her love for the animals is communicative and her place beautiful and quiet. And the wallabies are so cute !! I loved this guy, he was so helpful and interested. He was easy to feed, very respectful and easy to get along with.
We got lots done then I enjoyed chilling out with him in the afternoon.

Zoe is A lovely girl and we got a lot done together. She got up a ladder onto the roof and cleaned the gutters. She also helped me rolling up a shade cloth cover that is over the veranda for shade in summer which is a tricky job. Molly's a great girl with a brilliant mind, and see's the funny side within a conversation. She asks intelligent questions and got me thinking of stuff I hadn't thought of. I also learned some tasty Vegan recipes. Molly works well and tackles any job with enthusiasm.

Maggie did a lot of work for me and even faced a fear of heights cleaning out the gutters.
I don't think bush work was her favourite thing, but she was certainly on the ball when it came to the animals.

Sarah is a great girl and happy to get stuck into anything.
We had some gum trees to cut up and clear, piles of Lantana to burn, and holes to dig for plants. Not to mention buckets of Roo poo to pick up daily.
Sarah admitted to finding some of this hard work but handled it realy well and never complained.
I can definitely recommend Sarah.

Mallorie was a God sent. I had a small virus that left me with no energy at all. Once Mall knew the routine she just got stuck in and let me have the break I really needed.

This was Aaron's first Workaway experience so he didn't know what to expect.
He settled in well and worked more hours than required because we were doing some dangerous hazard reduction burn offs that could not be left alone.

Alberto is a great help and a really nice guy. He crawled under the house and wired it all in securely and created an outside area so my cats can't eat the wildlife!

It was an amazing experience in the wildlife of New South Wales. It was a great surrounding with a lot of rainforest and their typically animals. This is perfect for naturelovers and people who are not afraid to get dirty hands. At the moment it's unfortunately hardwork and not good for females.
