My name is George. I'm the founder of a bird-watching company in Ecuador. I'm also a naturalist, photographer and bird guide. Together with my family we try to show visitors the pristine birds of Ecuador and also try to conserve the beautiful flora and fauna Ecuador has to offer.
Our main location is in Quito, but we also have lodges in Tandayapa and Milpe (near Mindo). Besides the lodges we also have 7 strategically located private birding and nature reserves.
For our private nature reserve in the lower Amazon we are currently searching for volunteers for 2018/2019. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to spend a minimum of 2-3 months working at our private nature reserve. The private nature reserve near Loreto is a newly bought property in the Amazon, with the intention to conserve and protect this part of the lower Amazon. In this nature reserve you can find many species of birds and animals (deer, monkeys, coati's, agouti's, lowland paca's, snakes, butterflies).

As a volunteer at the lodge you will get to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, birds, flora and fauna. We also have rivers and waterfalls where you can relax in your free time.
During your time here, you will learn more about local flora and fauna and ofcourse you can also learn more about the birds of Ecuador, if you wish.
You learn more about the culture of the village people in the lower Amazon. The people in the village are very welcoming and enjoy hanging out together.
As a volunteer you will help with trail maintenance at the private nature reserve. You make sure the trails are visible and suitable for visitors who come to the nature reserve. At the volunteerhouse there is equipment available to clean the trails.
Illegal poaching and illegal logging is a big problem in area of the Amazon rainforest. Sadly, this also happens quite frequently in the private nature reserve, because of lack of surveillance. That's why we started this project in this area of the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador to promote nature conservation. By having volunteers living at the private property, we will have more control over this problem and can find ways of preventing this from happening. We ask our volunteers to also participate in the surveillance of the private nature reserve.
Besides trail maintenance, other tasks like gardening, construction work and surveillance, you can also be part of the volunteerwork. If you have the wish to also start an educational project in the village on nature conservation, you are free to initiate a project yourself.
Volunteers help at the reserve for max. 25 hrs a week (5 days, 5 hrs a day).
Applicants should be fluent in English, and at least understand basic Spanish.
Applicants should also be physically fit and be able to work independently/on your own at the nature reserve.
You will work at your own risk.
If you fit the description above, and wish to spend time at our private nature reserve in the Lower Amazon, please contact us.
Volunteers will stay at the volunteerhouse which is newly built at the private reserve. The volunteerhouse is fully equipped with bed, cooking facilities, fridge, freezer, fan and dining table and chairs. There is no internet available.
Food is not provided for, you will have to buy food yourself.
You can buy your food in the nearest town of Loreto. There is a daily collectivo (big truck) going to Loreto in the morning
and returning at 15pm in the afternoon (duration 30min; $1). There is a schedule with fixed times, but these times are not strictly followed. Sometimes you need to wait a long time for the truck to finally arrive to go to Loreto (the nearest 'city').
There is also a fruit & vegetable truck passing the village of Campo Alegre by once a week (Tuesday or Wednesday), which sells fruit and vegetables.
For helping at all locations it's important to bring with you the following necessities:
- Good raingear: a good poncho and waterproof cover for your belongings.
- Insect repellent: enough for the whole stay. There are many mosquitos and flies.
- Rubberboots. You can buy these everywhere at a shop in town ($7-10).
If you go to volunteer at private nature reserve near Loreto (lower Amazon), the following information might be useful:
The volunteerhouse is located in the reserve near the village of Campo Alegre. When coming from Quito, you have to take the bus from the Quitumbe Terminal to Loreto. From Loreto you can either take a taxi ($10 or bargain hard for $8) or collective truck called 'Ranchera' ($1; going to Payamino). It's a 7km paved road, and 7km unpaved road to get there. Get off at the village of Campo Alegre, after the bridge. The last 'Ranchera' leaves at 3pm from the busterminal.
The Ranchera from Payamino to Loreto passes the village of Campo Alegre at 6am, 9.15am and 5pm. From Loreto to Payamino (final destination), it passes Campo Alegre at 4am, 8am and 4pm.
There is no internet or WIFI connection available in Campo Alegre.
In Loreto there is free WIFI available at the 'comedores' at the first floor of the busterminal, in the back.
Another option for WIFI is Greenfrost Natural Frozen Yoghurt, where you can buy an ice-cream for $1 and enjoy a good WIFI connection.
