We are happy to host in June
We also will be hosting in the second half of October and then November for you to experience our olive harvest.
We are a couple who took early retirement from education. We live in a beautiful setting 2km above the town of Orgiva in the Alpujarras. We built, with the help of local Spanish builders, our house, with pool in the middle of our 27 hectares of olive trees and wild campo. We enjoy walking, listening to music, reading, sewing, art, the odd outing and more recently our new granddaughter!
Each year we harvest olives for our own pressing which keeps us in cold-pressed, organic olive oil for the following year.
We try to be as self-sufficient as possible in vegetables. We have a garden below the house, known as La Huerta, where we grow organic vegetables following a no dig system. There are avocado trees and fruit trees. There is a small poly tunnel to try to extend our season a bit.
Also we keep a few hens for eggs. We have a cockerel called Mickey. Sometimes we incubate eggs.
We live completely off-grid. Our electricity comes from solar photovoltaic panels and a micro hydro system. We have spring water. In the house this is filtered and treated with UV so it is safe to drink. The main house has hot water from solar panels and a wood burning range in the winter.
Volunteers that we host always learn a lot while they are here about olives, growing organically and off-grid living. Because we live a bit off the beaten track they enjoy walking around our land as well as venturing further afield in their free time. Walking down into Orgiva is possible. They experience amazing wildlife, natural vegetation and interesting geology.
We have a comfortable apartment available for our volunteers. It has a washing machine etc and a private terrace overlooking the Sierra Lujar where you can eat, read, paint, do yoga if the weather is good (which it mostly is).
Each day we share a morning break and lunch with our volunteers when we enjoy learning about each other. Our own countries, politics. You name it we've discussed it!
If you arrive in your own vehicle please appreciate that we live 2km up a dirt track.

Orgiva is a good sized town with many bars, restaurants and a sports centre. It is 30 minutes from the coast and an hour to Granada. There are regular bus services to Granada and up to the white villages. Granada has a train station also. Malaga is the main airport with good bus links to Orgiva via Granada. There is a ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains just above Granada. There are many beautiful walks. Our aim is to restore our land to its former glory.

We worked from 8:30am until 10, when we had a half an hour toast and coffee stop. Then we worked until 2pm, when we had lunch with Karen, Steve and Nick.

We worked about 20 hours a week (4 a day) doing work on the land, and received comfortable accommodation in the caravan and delicious meals daily. For us, this seemed very fair.
We also had a good time with Steve, Karen and their son Nick, they are all really nice people, and easy to get along with. The… read more
