We are a family living in a beautiful part of North Lincolnshire. We have a small private endurance training yard, with horses competing from novice to FEI 3* competition in almost 30 acres of varied pasture.
Our property is set in the tranquil setting of Alkborough Flatts, managed by the Environment Agency and is a haven for wild life and rare birds. Anyone interested in peace and quiet will love being here to recharge their batteries. There is a lot of opportunity to photograph, paint or just relax and enjoy the locality.
The tasks outside can sometimes be physically demanding. It is advised to bring strong shoes and warm waterproof clothing. Gloves are also advised at all times. We provide specialist PPE as it may be required for some of the tasks.
Riding, and even competition, may be available to more competent riders. Please bring your own riding hat, we cannot provide. Ridden and horse handling skills will be assessed on arrival to determine your level of competence. Some basic training required for your safety will be given, however we do not give riding lessons as we are not a recognised riding school and as such are not insured.
There are some tasks in the house available for those who prefer, and usually, on really bad weather days, these are undertaken anyway.
We prefer a reasonable understanding of English. Equine terminology can be quite challenging! But fun exchanging different words for the same thing! We look forward to learning your words too through language exchange, teaching and practice. Extended vocabulary is the key to improving language. We ensure that your English is better when you leave! Hopefully we will learn some of yours too.
We provide all meals, breakfast and lunch is "help yourself" and dinner in the evening we take together, giving opportunity to discuss the day.
Please note that although there is a very small livery business run on the same property, it is operated totally separately from my own personal endurance horses (I have 10 of my own). All the horses in the livery yard are all "Do it Yourself”. My daughter manages this yard alongside her own 4 horses (again Workaways not asked to help with her horses either). We have work placement students from the local college who work in the livery yard. Workaway visitors are not required to help in the livery yard.

Alkborough is one of a cluster of small villages in North Lincolnshire.
Our house overlooks the Rivers Meet - the meeting of the River Trent and the Ouse, creating the River Humber. The views are spectacular.
The village has an active evening club which welcomes visitors to the area. All our workaways are included in any activity we are involved in if they choose, including visits to the local area and even further afield.
I am sure most workaways find living in England very different from their own families. It is surprising as I think we assume everyone lives like we do in the UK. It is really interesting to have that discussion and find out about different ways of living, working and education in different parts of the world.
We have had workaways experience Christmas with us on more than one occasion - very different from the experience at home.
Some of the skills I hope all the workaways will take away from here is to work empathetically around horses and understand how they interact with each other, most learn how to use the quad bike, some even learn how to reverse the trailer! We teach safety above all else around the horses.
Workaway is an opportunity to do so much more! It is an experience for life.

The help required is mainly physical outdoor help in all aspects of horse care and horse welfare. Our horses are given the best care to enable them to perform at top level.
A responsible, kind attitude towards animals is a must. Horse care is primarily about routine. Tasks can include feeding, changing rugs, turning out, mucking out, field care, grooming, bathing, groundwork plus any extra tasks around the yard to ensure the high standards we have here necessary to compete our horses at the level we do. This, of course, can be taught but an aptitude towards horses is required.
There may be ridden work to those who are experienced riders and this may include schooling and canter training. For riders there is opportunity to improve as we have visiting trainers visit the yard. We value groundwork as a fitness process and again you will learn much from observation and training.
Preparing for competition is also included in tasks, loading equipment, preparing horses for travel and attending the competition.
Those with a little equine experience are welcome, though please note this is not a riding school so there is no riding instruction given as such. However basic skills of handling horses and groundwork can be taught, as well as the general daily welfare of our horses.
We welcome workaways to share their cuisine with us and they are encouraged to cook their typical food with us. I have now bought a special crepe pan for our workaway visitors! Profiteroles, Croque Monsieur, hearty casseroles, beetroot soup, tarte tatin, several pasta dishes, fruit pies are to name a few that have been enjoyed over the years! Our couple from Singapore who came and stayed over Christmas 2018 prepared pheasant for the pot! Something they had not done before!
We encourage projects during workaway stays which have included:
• designing and creating a patio garden each spring
• helping with our large pond and working sustainably with the fish and vegetation.
• tree management and clearing fields after storms.
• repairing a barn roof
• creating a safety fence around the pond
• painting stables inside and out.
• cleaning and weatherproofing wooden cladding
• photography for website
• clearing out, sorting and boxing goods for charity shops
• mending a really difficult piece of fencing
• cleaning out tack room and re-organising - now much better!
• cleaning out feed room and re-organising
• cleaning and painting outdoor furniture.
All projects always signed off somewhere on the project!
This is a haven for wild life and there is much opportunity to enjoy watching nature on our 30 acres. There are rare birds for those with patience to wait for them to appear. There is a summerhouse overlooking the pond for you to use as an observation place.
Este anfitrión ofrece intercambio de idiomas
We are always keen to exchange words and phrases. Most Workaways keep a list of English sayings we tell them!
Workaways will be accommodated in the house unless request otherwise. The rooms are very comfortable and workaways have sole use of the bathroom and a TV room. There is also a variety of board games, dominoes, billiards and a good selection of reading books available.
You will also have access to a washing machine and tumbler dryer
Though with the quarantine requirement of Covid we request the first 14 days (or as the Government dictate dependant of place of departure) are taken in the caravan. The accommodation in the caravan is comfortable and some workaways prefer to stay there for the full duration of their stay.
We provide all meals, breakfast and lunch is help yourself and dinner in the evening we take together, giving opportunity to discuss the day.
I am happy to provide special food if required.
Winterton is the nearest town with a small supermarket, hairdresser, fast food takeaway, public house, doctors, chemist.
There is a bus service from the village to the nearest large town of Scunthorpe.
There is a railway and bus station there etc. with train and coach links all over the country.
Scunthorpe has many amenities - a swimming pool, shopping, indoor bowling, multi cultural restaurants, a variety of religious venues - Catholic Church, Mosque, Gurdwara, Sikh Temple etc.,
The nearest airport is South Humberside, though Doncaster is only 45 minutes away.
The easiest route here is via Manchester Airport, then train to Scunthorpe.
Kingston upon Hull is the largest city close by with all amenities and again only a bus ride away.
Trains can be taken to the coast - approximately 30 minutes away.
