My time with Bob and working at the lodge was fun. He's direct and friendly. The work sometimes entails multiple projects going on at once but I enjoyed that since I wasn't bored. His place is in town and a walk away from stores, but everything is noticeably more expensive in Alaska. The area itself is beautiful and I never got tired of the view.

I intended to take a chance and give Bob and the lodge a season, then ended up staying for three! I really lucked out with a host that was genuinely open and communicative of exactly what was expected of me as well as concerned for my comfort, safety, and overall needs during what ended up being my nearly year-long stay. In that time, the need for

Such communication is key here. Bob has a vision for his many projects and you will need to make your desires know as his energy is very focused on said projects. Still, you’ll find the boss of overwhelmingly generous, patient, and fair spirit, so long as you offer him the same. You get out what you put in at Red Door. Come with an adventurous, willing, kind spirit and adventure, compensation, and kindness ye shall receive, all who enter. Thanks abundant to Bob and all the friends I made in Homer and at Red Door Lodge, workawayers and other staff/neighbors/compatriots alike. Left a big piece of me here. It’s in good hands. One day I’d love to return and work for Bob again, get into the vibrant arts and music scene again, escape the more claustrophobic world again. Truly. Cheers, all xo
We spent 2 weeks at Bob’s place.
From the first day he treated us very kind. We had all we needed in the room he lent us. The job may varied a lot, from diggin a ditch,to put a french drain, to move jet skies inside the property.
There always something to do. He is always teaching and sharing something with people.
Patience is one of his biggest
… read more skills when you go with any doubts. We learned a lot about tools (including driving a small tractor) and also about life in Alaska. He took us on his boat to the glacier and another day to sail around.
You can count on him at any time.
During that period we met other workaways who became friends just from the begging.
Sadly we had to move for personal reasons but we would have loved to stay longer at his Lodge.
We are really hoping to see him in the near future.
Thanks for this opportunity!

By far one of the best Workaway experiences we’ve ever had in the sweet little town of Homer Alaska. Bob’s lodge is always abuzz with activity and opportunities to connect with others. The lodge is an easily walkable distance from grocery stories, many great restaurants, the beach and casual local nightlife. We had several close up moose
… read more encounters and it was not uncommon to see bald eagles regularly. We had several great successful fishing trips on Bob’s charter boat enabling us to make the best memories of iconic Alaska. Incredible skill was not a requirement, Bob has the skills. What was required was self motivation, good work ethic and an ability to act as a team player. What’s needed, simply put, is assistance, extra hands to support him in his various projects, all of which are worth while. If your opinions on every matter need to be heard and if you have a strong desire to influence others this is probably not the place for you. If you’ve ever had a dream come true and and would like to simply be instrumental in supporting another’s dream then I would strongly recommend this Workaway. Bob is generous, compassionate, honest, intelligent and has a subtle but great sense of humor. If you have a willingness to invest yourself in others and a desire to push yourself out of your comfort zone you’ll leave a more enriched person as we did. You’ll be surprised to discover things about yourself along the way, it truly was an amazing experience.

Homer, Alaska should be on everyone's bucket list. It is a really beautiful place with lots to offer. It's also very rare to find an experience like this that provides lodging and pays a wage (if you are legal to work in the U.S.). You are responsible for your own food and do expect to pay high Alaskan prices due to the remoteness of the location,
… read more but I think it's totally worth it to experience the raw, wild nature of Homer, Alaska. Some call Alaska the last great frontier, and for good reason. The natural beauty is breathtaking. Majestic snow-covered mountains on all sides of you, with the great Pacific Ocean to boot. I had an amazing time. The other workaways were great and we formed a close comradery. The work was varied and included a lot of cleanup and organizations in preparing for improvements to the lodge. We also painted the outside of the lodge and built a cool off-grid toilet/shower combo to use as a rental for the business. I imagine as things get going, there will be more construction and renovations. I also got to go in the charter boat once before I left, but it was brand new. As I understand, that will be something to get involved with for future workaways as he has a boat charter business and a remote glamping and adventure site that he takes groups to. I would have stayed longer had I not been offered my dream position in Scotland!Get to experience city life and explore Los Angeles, USA
