🌿 Welcome to Our Permaculture Eco-Farm on Mfangano Island, Kenya!
A Mission-Driven Experience in Sustainability & Community Empowerment
Join Florence and Gabriel on Mfangano Island for an unforgettable Workaway rooted in permaculture, eco-construction, and meaningful community connection.
🌍 Who We Are
We’re Florence (Luo) and Gabriel (Suba) — partners in life and vision. With over 30 years of combined experience in eco-tourism, permaculture, and sustainable building, we’ve created a living classroom where culture, community, and nature thrive together.
🌱 Our Mission
We’re building more than just a farm — it’s a hub for learning, regeneration, and empowerment. Our vision is to inspire local and global volunteers to live intentionally, work sustainably, and cultivate lasting change from the ground up.
💪 What We're Working On
1. Empowering Women Through Regenerative Farming
We train local women in sustainable agriculture, helping them grow food, launch eco-businesses, and become community leaders. Our goal: to form women-led cooperatives with access to broader markets.
2. Building Sustainable Infrastructure
Join us in creating essential eco-structures like:
A chicken house made from local, natural materials
An aquaponics system inspired by traditional Suba boat design
3. Growing Our Permaculture Vision
Help us design and plant:
Banana circles & keyhole gardens
Compost systems, water catchments, and food forests
4. Strengthening Our Digital Presence
We need help to:
Create content (photos, videos, blogs)
Manage social media
Launch fundraising campaigns
Share our story with the world
🤝 What We’re Looking For
Ideal Volunteers Are:
Passionate about sustainability and service
Open to cultural exchange and simple living
Creative, flexible, and hands-on
Ready to work hard and contribute in diverse ways
Whether you're skilled in farming, storytelling, building — or simply bring an open heart — your presence here makes a difference.
Come plant a seed of change with us.
Together, let’s give and grow something beautiful on Mfangano Island.Tipos de ayuda y oportunidades de aprendizaje

Cultural Exchange
At the heart of this experience is cultural exchange — the richer the mix of cultures, the stronger our community becomes. You’ll learn at the natural pace of life on Mfangano Island, guided by local project leaders who understand both the traditions of Mfangano and the wider Kenyan context. They are committed to mutual respect and deep cultural understanding. As a volunteer, you’ll have the chance to learn local cooking, pick up the language, and live in an international group while being immersed in the rhythms and beauty of island life. From shared meals to lakeside sunsets, it’s a true exchange of knowledge, customs, and connection.Organización benéfica registrada
Este anfitrión es una organización benéfica registrada en su país y busca voluntarios para ayudar en su(s) proyecto(s).

Ayuda
At the moment we would want to join hands and focus on finishing our permaculture poultry house in the food forest . This involves working on our Aquaponic fish pond in the same food forest. Working on our banana circle and key hole garden .
Also we ask help with proposal (grants) and computer technician work.
We kindly ask volunteers to participate and help us fulfilling this mission.
DECEMBER - VIDEOGRAPHER: We are looking for a videographer to support in the filming and creation of a video displaying our local Mfangano Cultural festival which will be taking place in December.Idiomas hablados
Inglés: Fluido
Luo: Fluido
Swahili (Kiswahili): FluidoAlojamiento
Volunteers will stay in a separate house, which is equipped with a living room, a kitchen, a shower, and a latrine. We also have a place for solo volunteers in the food forest.
Phone network and free WIFI is available.
The house is surrounded by trees that provide shade, and it has direct access to the lake with a beautiful view.
We can accommodate more than two volunteers. Volunteers will receive three meals a day: we prepare two of the meals, and the evening meal is prepared in collaboration with the volunteers.
Weekend Schedule:
Saturday and Sunday are free days, with no work required. On these days, volunteers are encouraged to explore, relax, or enjoy activities on the island. However, on Sundays, we have a Food Exchange Program. This means that volunteers will work together to cook the evening meal for everyone. This includes organizing themselves to shop for the ingredients at the market and preparing the dinner together.
We hope you enjoy staying with us and feel like part of the family. Come and create unforgettable memories with us in Kenya!Algo más...
Mfangano Island is a nature-lovers paradise with plenty of birdlife, hikes and peaks with stunning panoramic views. We are on the east south side of the island and exposed to sun rise, but there is much to see and experience on the other parts of the island as well as the other nearby islands on your days off.
We either walk or take boat and motorcycles around (no more cars on the island !) and there are motor boats to transport people to different points on the island. It is possible to walk the whole ring road around the island in one day (if you start very early in the morning !).Un poco más de información

I loved how the workaway functioned. You live in a separate house and when I was there there were loads of volunteers so we would have a great time together in our breaks and weekends. You are just by the lake so you can pop in for a swim or bath when you need!
