We are Florence and Gabriel running community bassed organization (CBO)
We are on a mission to empower our children, widows, young women and youths 16 to 35 years through permaculture and environmental awareness,.
Thanks to our permaculture volunteer through our program.
We believe in the power of the community and nature : our project is looking for volunteers that would like to be part of it. Our main focus at this time is on sustainable agriculture, food and nutrition, empowering our community through sharing a sustainable farming skills. Our current projects are :
1.Empower vulnerable children
2. Empowering widows and young women
3.Empowering youths 16 to 35 years
Empower vulnerable children through
- Our permaculture farm :
We already have a food forest and would like to use it for food and nutrition programm. Also keyhole garden, banana circles and two fish ponds as well for our project sustainability.
The fish pond will help our crews to find a way to get fish better for fishing.
Widows and young women empowerment :
We started training 10 widows in Mfangano Island. We divide them into 3 teams. The first four will be helping in permaculture in our schools, beaches, and in the market places. The second four will be helping making cloths. school uniform for children. The remaining two will be working on water harvesting,
From September to December last year but one, we started training them and from this year February we'll start working with them. According to our plan on permaculture gallery, they will help us to work on the project sustainability. The goal of this project is that our children in the school learn about permaculture and environment through this 10 women and 10 youths.
- Building project :
We are building boats this year 2021 and also finishing our learning house for the kids to get in. With the charity help from our volunteer, we manage to buy some timber and also make windows to finish our learning house and build 5 boats. One is ready and we are planning to perchase timber for the remaining 4. We are going to create employment for 10 youths and also give a chance to three women to help in preparation of fish to the market. This will happen from now to April. We also have some garden work, school visitation etc.
By volunteering to our program you are creating a change that starts with you and expands around the world.

While on exchange, volunteers can benefit from a multitude of unique life experiences. You can also have a tour exposer around Mfangano Island at your own expense. To put it simply, the exchange is eternally awesome! Here are our top five reasons why going on exchange with us is a worthwhile life experience:
1) Experience a new culture and learn a new language
2) Being part of a sustainable project to save Mfangano Island natural resources
3) Make friends from all around the world
4) Get a ‘second family’
5) Personal development
Permaculture:
We are always looking for volunteers who can help us with children learning permaculture. We have a big property and there is always children to play with and agricultural work to be done.
For now :
- helping us looking after the children, grow our food forest, making/setting up our keyhole garden, banana circle and fish ponds.
- be part of the project by helping setting up the nursery, the food forest, the keyhole garden, the banana circle and the fish pond.
In environment our children use eco bricks method to teach other kids.
Construction:
At present we have a building that we wish to turn into a vulnerable person house but it needs to be completed. Rebuilding certain walls, putting in windows and putting a roof on the building. We are also looking to build fish ponds after that.
So if you are able to assist us in construction and if getting your hands dirty is for you, come and join our project !

Volunteers stay in our home in a separate and cosy volunteer house (for 2 persons – 2 single beds) with a private compost toilet and a shower place for their convenience (bucket shower). You also have the possibility to shower directly in the lake if you want to. We also have nore opportunities to stay with our 10 women in their home. We can accept more than 10 volunteers!
We do have volunteer food exchange. This exchange allows us also feel the test of their food. We cook our best tradition food on Thursday us asuprice to our volunteer
Mfangano Island is a nature-lovers paradise with plenty of birdlife, hikes and peaks with stunning panoramic views. We are on the south side of the island but there is much to see and experience on the other parts of the island as well as the other nearby islands on your days off.
We either walk or take motorcycles around (no cars on the island !) and there are motor boats to transport people to different points on the island. It is possible to walk the whole ring road around the island in one day too (if you start very early in the morning !).
