Our eco lodge is situated at the Eastern end of the Lake Malawi National Park, with its own private beach. Doing business in the tourist industry, the lodge aims to promote and instill environmental values in Malawi for nature conservation.

Encroachment on Forests, fish, water and other important resources has reached a point in Malawi where urgent redress is required. In order to achieve its goals, our eco lodge is involved in various projects and programmes such as environmental education and advocacy, litter control, reforestation, protection of fish breeding areas and the surrounding forest reserve.

Malawi is rated by the World Bank as the poorest country in the world. Accordingly our eco lodge is also involved in other projects relating to education (early learning), vocational training, skills development, health and nutrition, etc.

The eco lodge are headed by Riki, a retired human rights Lawyer, who was born and bred in Central Africa and returned upon retirement.

The starting point is to train and educate our staff, who are mostly appointed as unskilled. This includes chef training (inclusive of some food science, nutrition and kitchen organization and management), hospitality and management training, gardening, vegetable and herb gardening, vocational skills. Environmental education is at all times integrated with the day to day training of staff.

Volunteers are required in respect of both the in house training programmes and the external programmes.

In terms of the external programmes, we specifically need volunteers for a pre school, accommodating orphans and to supervise an art programme where hand made paper and various products, using waste and other organic materials, are produced. The orphans are part of a feeding programme and someone is also needed to assist with planning and preparing the meals for the program.

We have marked out a lovely hiking trail in the mountain forest. Snorkling around the cove in which we are situated is good and there is opportunity for volunteers to go out with guests on boat rides to islands and other areas. We have regular djembe (drum) circles, music performances and other entertainment.

We are close to the Monkey Bay Harbour, where some historic marine vessels are kept and the Ilala leaves from there to Likhoma Island and Nkhata Bay in the North once a week on a Friday and returns on the following Tuesday. Monkey Bay Town has a market and various small shops and stalls. Sumbi market boasts a traditional healer, selling his herbs and stuff on a Tuesday. There are fishing villages in the area, which can only be reached by boat or by hiking over the mountains.

Our official alarm clock is the fish eagles starting out for their first feed early morning.
