We are an 1100 acre jungle conservation area, with an isolated small farm. We are only accessible by river. There are creeks on the property, and nothing but jungle for miles. We are implementing biodiversity monitoring programs in the jungle. The farm itself follows permaculture principles, and is in its fledgling stages. Ideal opportunity to use your design skills and really create something.
Livestock may include pigs, goats, chickens and dogs. Big dogs.
We focus on conservation and studying and understanding the world around us. This reserve is home to hundreds of species of birds, lizards, butterflies, bees and mammals. We see tapir footprints on the trail and occasionally capture a jaguar or puma on our trailcam. There are peccary nearby.
Access is by car, then boat, then on foot (about 45 minutes from the town of Punta Gorda).
You will eat three farm fresh meals a day with us, work alongside Maya farmers, and you are free to swim in the creeks, or follow the jungle trails in your free time. You must have at least average physical fitness.

This is the real tropical jungle experience. Hear howler monkeys through the evening, watch parrots fly overhead every morning. See amazing moths, butterflies and lizards around you while you work or relax.
On occasion we have indigenenous Maya staying here as well.
You are expected to help with anything needed around the farm and home, but helping atmosphere is not too structured. Activities or projects may include:
Biodiversity monitoring, trailcam wildlife surveillance, landscaping, food forest, biochar, rotational grazing, building raised beds, electric fencing, maintaining and improving trails, planting trees, feeding/managing animals, animal housing, growing the farm, tidying up.
English: Fluido
Housing: A screened porch makes a light and airy bedroom, and a separate room from the house. It has a couch which folds out to a double bed.
The loft of our thatch house (has electric lights, phone charger etc), or tents, or camping hammocks. Hammocks can be hung just about anywhere you like; in our screened porch, among the trees near the house, down by the creek, even in the tower overlooking the jungle. Blankets, pillows etc provided.
Food: You will eat three delicious farm fresh meals a day with us. Dietary restrictions are accommodated as best we can (please let us know well in advance). Our meals are big on fresh home baking and pasture raised pork.
Bathroom: We have a composting toilet. All our water is stored rainwater. The shower overlooks the garden and is often hot.
Electricity: We have solar electricity. It will not run hair dryers and air conditioning but will be fine for anything we are likely to need, like refrigeration, power tools etc.
We have internet, but it is slow and expensive.
There are jungle trails, swimming creeks, and relaxing hammocks. Many books about permaculture, the jungle, or Belize. Take a book up to the tower and read in a hammock in the canopy.
This is a remote location and helping us is not for everyone. If you are scared of bugs, spiders and snakes this is probably not the place for you. If you want to photograph bugs, spiders and snakes you will love it!
Trips into town are rare and well planned. The nearest significant town of Punta Gorda is only 45 minutes away. We often drive there, and you would be able to join. There you will find bars and restaurants, the local market, boats to Guatemala, and stores.
