For the moment I'm working on some refurbishing projects and a helping hand would be a great asset... in exchange, I will gladly provide famous Southeastern Serbian Hospitality.

There are various projects I'm working on, fixing the ground floor of the house that was built mid 70's... currently occupied by digging a trench for a drainage system that will divert the water from getting in touch with the basement and ground floor of a house.

There will be a clean private room and it is expected to be maintained that way during the stay of the guest(s).

15 hours/week = no food will be provided only accommodation, if willing to work more hours, I will provide a meal/s (all depends on how efficient is our progress and communication).
Recently I had alcohol users/abusers staying over and decided that there will be zero tolerance for people coming to my house intoxicated!

We originally arranged to stay with Mirko for nine days, but after arriving at his place #redacted text# and due to several events which we found troubling, we decided to leave immediately.

At first Mirko seemed very friendly, if a little intense, but there were many red flags over the time that we spent with him. The first was that he served us … read more bread that was completely frozen. It had literally just been removed from the freezer, and Mirko didn't seem to think it was strange to eat this. At the time we thought it was a little odd but obviously not too concerning by itself, however we are mentioning it here only because later on it seemed that this was part of a pattern of behaviour which we found concerning. The frozen bread was the only food we were provided with after arriving at Mirko’s house around 17:00.

After this, Mirko suddenly suggested going to a hot spring. We both thought it would be a little late for a spa to be open by the time we got there, but since Mirko is a local we trusted him. When we arrived, the spa was closed, but Mirko mentioned other places nearby. It was dark outside by this point and Mirko then led us into an unlit area of the park. While walking he told us how he thought Jimmy Savile (probably the worst serial rapist in British history) was innocent and made other disturbing comments about Michael Jackson’s sexual abuse. We found this extremely concerning, as we had only been with Mirko for a little over an hour, and he was speaking positively about people who have committed serious sexual offences and making light of these incidents.

We thought that we were being taken to a different spa where there would be changing facilities, but Mirko took us to an outside spring. This meant that we had to get completely naked in the freezing cold in public to change into our swimming costumes. This made us uncomfortable but we didn’t want to be rude, so we went along with it. We need to stress here that Mirko didn’t tell us that this is what we would have to do or check in advance whether we would be comfortable with it. This is even worse since one of us is a woman, who was put in a situation where she felt that she had to get naked in public, in the freezing cold and with a man who she had only just met.

While we were bathing, Mirko suggested that we leave Niš earlier than planned and travel with him to Bosnia and Kosovo. This also made us uncomfortable, as we felt that we were being pressured to change our plans and leave the country with someone who we had just met, #redacted text#. When we returned home around 20:30, Mirko abruptly told us that it was time for us to get under some blankets and left us to go to bed. We had not been given any dinner, or any opportunity to get dinner for ourselves, and had eaten nothing except some frozen bread since lunchtime.

At this point, it became clear that the description of the accommodation was also inaccurate. Mirko had promised a "clean private room", but we were sleeping in a freezing cold and very messy living room / kitchen. Mirko’s entire house is basically a building site, and there were things lying everywhere and nowhere to unpack our bags. When we closed the windows to try and get warm, we realised why they had been open - the room had a strong chemical smell which started to make us feel unwell.

Neither of us felt that we could comfortably sleep there, and this combined with our uneasiness over the events of the evening led to us deciding to leave. We both felt a strong instinct that we were not completely safe #redacted text#. Because of the conditions in the room we were unwilling to sleep there and felt we had to leave immediately. We decided to leave without speaking to Mirko because he had already gone to bed, and also because we didn’t know how he would react and we wanted to avoid any confrontation. However, after we left we did send him a very polite message explaining our reasons for leaving and wishing him well for the future.

In just a couple of hours, there were three incidents which we found extremely concerning - the comments about Jimmy Savile; putting us in a position where we felt pressured to get naked in a public place without warning us; and trying to convince us to change our plans and leave the country with him. One of these incidents by itself would have made us doubt whether we wanted to stay with Mirko, but the fact that all of these things happened in one evening made us certain that we had to leave. On top of this, the condition of the room and the inaccuracy of Mirko's profile was another concerning factor, and also made us feel that we had to leave immediately. We are very sad that our experience ended this way, and we didn't feel that we were in immediate danger, but when you’re staying with strangers you need to feel completely safe, especially as a woman. In this case we did not feel safe for many reasons, and so we had to listen to our instinct and remove ourselves from this situation.

Mirko is a excellent host. He helped me alot with my bicycle trip in europe, going out of his way to make sure everything was ok. He also helped me see the more the daily life of serbia, visiting neighbours over coffee etc.

I really liked this host. It corresponds to the very ideology of workaway. You get food and a bed, work 25 hours a week, and then you can do whatever you want. Fue un trabajo duro pero valió la pena fueron dos semanas con Mirkos, estoy deseando volver para volver a vivir una Gran experiencia y viajar por Serbia.
Fui con él a Bujanovac & Vranje (Serbia meridional) mientras asistía a la actuación de un famoso guitarrista español y durante ese tiempo tuvo un invitado de Mumbai, 🇮🇳.
