Due to COVID 19 restrictions we are not taking any further placements until Spring 2021, and then subject to relaxation of current regulations.
We hope that things improve in 2021 but there may be travel restrictions for some time.

We're especially looking for Workawayers with woodworking and joinery / building skills.

We’re Tony and Jayne and our project is to complete our eco-house, on our wee croft (0.4ha) on the Isle of Gigha.

We’re actually carbon negative as our PV array produces more electricity than we’ll use.

We are on the west side of the island Gigha, close to the sea and with stunning views over to Islay and Jura.
Gigha is about 6 miles long and one mile wide, and is the most southerly of the Hebrides, and a 20 minute ferry journey from the mainland of Kintyre.

The house is two separate roundhouse modules in SIPS (structural insulated panels) with turf roofs and larch cladding. It is a pioneering design.

We’re close to finishing the small roundhouse and hope to move in Spring 2021.

We currently live in another house on the island with our Bearded Collie Rosie, who is very, very people friendly.

We have about 500 trees planted up, for coppice wood for our woodburners, a small organic garden, and fruit trees and bushes.

We’re committed to an Arts and Crafts approach and are making up our own joinery, as well as stained glass features and our own designed and built furniture.

We offer a friendly welcome, in a beautiful setting.
All home cooking and a wide range of different types of tasks needed to be done. We can help with basic skills and hope to pass on our own knowledge of sustainable architectural design and building.

The island is wonderful to explore, has plenty of archaeological sites, sandy beaches and wildlife.

    Ayuda

    We need help with:
    a) building tasks for the house,
    b) in our garden ( it is all raised beds )
    c) landscaping on the wee croft.

The main tasks on the house for 2020 have been in placing 150 sq. metres of turf sods on the roof this summer, (cut from our croft ground). During the autumn and winter the 12m roundhouse roof has been lined with insulation and the next task is to start constructing the interior walls.

We still have some hand dug drainage to install, and outside cladding to do on the rmain roundhouse.

There are a number of basic joinery ops needed too, and then help with basic construction tasks inside the main roundhouse when the weather deteriorates.

We may be able to accommodate couples for some visits.

You will have your own room in our house on the island during your stay.

We always scratch cook, in a range of styles, vegetarian, often cheese, fish and/or chicken, though we only eat red meat very rarely indeed.

Rosie, our 4 year old Beardie/Border collie cross is very affectionate and our guests will need to be dog lovers !!

    Algo más...

The island is fairly flat and great for cycling.
There are sandy beaches within ten minutes of our house and a good swimming place close by

The island has some rough country but there are some great walks and archaeological features. On a clear day the view from Creag Bhan, our highest point at 100m, stretches 75miles to the Isle of Mull northwards, and across to Malin Head in County Donegal 70 miles to the South west.

The island has a shop, a hotel with a bar, and a cafe/bistro by the sea.

Off island it is fairly easy to travel to Campbeltown by bus from Tayinloan. Tayinloan is about 3hrs from Glasgow by bus - and by one of Scotland's most scenic routes over the Rest and Be Thankful Pass and along the shore of Loch Fyne.

We are both practical people with building, craft and gardening skills and we are committed to being as sustainable as we can be.
